Ok. As we all know by now, the "Nintendo Wii" is currently receiving alot of bad games from good devs (Ubisoft's many games and SE - FF Chronicles My Life as King for ex.).

So, is it Nintendo's fault (including influence) that the Wii is currently receiving alot of casual/bad/quick-rip off/shovelware games?

On one hand, Nintendo is releasing stellar games on the Wii (SSBM, Galaxy, etc) for gamers. On the other hand, Nintendo is clearly marketing towards the casual/non-gamer crowd (so they may play a role partly). Their E3 showing in fact has enough evidence to support that claim. Instead of using the Wiimote on one of their many great franchises (star fox, f-zero, icarus, dk, etc.), they introduced it through Wii Music and Resort.

The Wii's controller and lack of power under the hood basically begs developers to make cheap, gimmicky games. It doesn't hurt that the Wii's ultra-casual userbase seems to actually want them.

No they aren't. Since the Wii is so cheap to develop for it tends to attract more trash. But it can also attract some good, *eyes at Monster Hunter.*

I don't understand the partly answer, casual games are not always "bad." It's that thinking that leads to close-mindedness.

Anyway my answer is 'no'. It's the developers choice in this matter. Nintendo themselves seem to utilize the Wii's power far better than anyone else.

Yes. 3rd party Company's know they can never compete with 1st party nintendo games on a Nintendo system. So they don't bother investing huge money into games for nintendo systems.

They can control what games come on their system, and well the fact that the hardware is so outdated it makes it easy for crappy little shovelware devs. to make a game for the system.

No, it is Nintendo's fault. If they had made a more capable machine, developers would actually care to make something for it. If you're a developer and you want to commit a few years of your life to something really great and really ambitious, you're not going to pick the Wii. The userbase isn't hardcore enough to turn a profit, and the machine probably doesn't have enough juice to actually run what you have in mind.

I won't necessarily say that Nintendo is to blame for all the crap being pushed onto the Wii, but they certainly don't seem to be doing much to solve the crisis either. Sure, they have released a handful of super-polished games like Galaxy and Metroid, but their main goal seems to be to push out casuial games like Wii Music and Sports, which, sadly, is where the real money probably lies.

I guess we can only pray that we will get some more games like Zack & Wiki or Boom Blox. These rushed Wii ports are getting more atrocious by the day, have you seen the new screenshots of Crysis?

Yes. Even Nintendo's first party software hasn't been particularly impressive in terms of showing why the Wii is so different from the Gamecube. Is it completely Nintendo's fault? No; people are buying the crappy, gimmicky games out there, which is why more are being made. But they're partially to blame, as this is essentially exactly what they were aiming for in the first place.

the thing is, nintendo had a capable machine last gen with power comparable to the other two and that didn't work out either. They still didn't get that great of a third party support (although, they at least got SOME multiplats).

Who knows what it will take for third parties to start actually giving nintendo support like it did in the nes and snes era

Well considering that nintendo games always do well, 3rd party will always suck compared to them

exceptions this gen so far:

zach+wiki, okami, nmh

Nintendo's big guns are like all AAA from multiple sites

MP3, SMG, LOZ:TP, SSBB, Super Paper Mario, WarioWare:Smooth moves

Only Fire Emblem didn't deliver to critics

But more good 3rd party games seem to be being developed

Nintendo was out of touch with developers for entirely different reasons last gen. They had lost most of their fanbase with the N64, and they wouldn't make the switch to DVD. With the Wii they have all the market attention, but the games are worse than ever. Developers just don't want to work on an extremely dated machine. It's like asking a digital artist to use Paint over Photoshop.

if the Wii was more advanced you wouldn't see as many of these games because they would be more expensive to develop

But if the developers spent more then 5 days making the games and put some thought into them then they could be good

Unfortunately, we don't even know what the Wii is capable of. Some critiques on the Wii's hardware tell us that it is basically just an Xbox with less memory capabilities while others (Factor 5 is especially bad about this) imply that the Wii is funny capable of rendering truly next-gen visuals is the developers actually utilize the console's unique features. Who knows what to believe?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo managed to make Galaxy run on the Gamecube – surely the Wii hasn't reached it's peak yet.

That's a weak cop out, and it's overdone. Not every game has to be a $30+ million blockbuster to be good. And besides, good developers are usually willing to spend a little extra time and money to make a great game.

By this rationale, Crayola crayons are the greatest art medium because they're dirt cheap and easy to use.

While that's true, low development costs are the reason why High voltage software (The Conduit) and Deep Silver (Cursed Mountain) can take and break from producing movie and license tie-ins and spend some time developing better software because the risks are so low in comparison.

I've been a Nintendo fanboy almost my entire life, and I can say that the wii sucks. I had so many hopes on it, yeah it's graphics are crap, but I couldn't care less for that.

The bad thing is that 3rd parties and even Nintendo is trying to make games look like crap.

Take a look at what's coming... and they even destroyed good franchises, MP1 & MP2 looked amazing, and were awesome games, both of them. Now take a look to MP3, it's by far the easiest, cheapest MP game ever.

I don't remember dying in the game, using a guide or trying to find the secret expansions (I recall a 90% found).

I know my post is messy, but I'm working and slept for 2 hours only.

THats exactly my problem. Wii is selling ALOT right now (same as PS1 and PS2) but its upcoming 3rd party games are not as great (or "acclaimed") even compared to low selling systems like X360 and PS3. It seems like most companies are not even taking the Wii seriously (SE for example has only 1 spin-off game announced - i think).

do you honestly think that if nintendo made the wii with specs comparable to the ps3/360, crap like petz/babyz/games for girls wouldnt exist? even though the petz series has been around long before the wii, and other crappy games like barbie horse adventure existed before the wii as well?

Its the developers job to take advantage of the hardware at hand. Its not Nintendos fault 3rd parties dont do that. Why dont they make their games for 360 or PS3 if they want to develop for more powerful hardware. If youre gunna make a Wii game use your resources to as maximum as possible otherwise dont bother. And how do they figure their hardcore games wont sell if they dont even bother to make any in the first place?

Yes it is:

Old hardware, enabling companies to easily program crap.

No multiplatforms, which leaves it with shovelware and Nintendo exclusives.

Nintendo is pushing those games further.

All consoles have crap games but since the Wii doesn't have almost any multi plats, the shovelware is more noticable but it is definately more abundant.

By this rationale, Crayola crayons are the greatest art medium because they're dirt cheap and easy to use.

exactly. good games take time. the Wii has only been out 1 1/2 years, and its not like it was a confirmed success from the beginning.

devs waited to see if the Wii bubble will burst, it hasnt, and its a success. only recently have they decided to take it seriously and will work on some games for it...

so before the GC people complained that Nintendo was too strict with 3rd party devs.... now they arent and people still complain :|

seriously folks, the people that arent happy with nintendo regarding their 3rd party will NEVER be happy with nintendo no matter what they do.

true nintendo fans really dont put that much emphasis on 3rd party support, they are used to not having very much of it. people who arent nintendo fans dont realize this and just complain... which is sad on their part

I would say the blame lies 50-50

if the Wii was more advanced you wouldn't see as many of these games because they would be more expensive to develop

But if the developers spent more then 5 days making the games and put some thought into them then they could be good

So a true Nintendo fan isn't a true fan of gaming then. Gotcha.
