I have been following all of Rockstar's games and to this day Red Dead Redemption is my favorite game they have made. Not only that, they have created an outstanding character. John Marston is Rockstar's best protagonist they have ever created IMHO. Tommy Vercetti coming in at 2nd. I can't wait to see what Rockstar has planned for Agent and Red Dead Revolution. :D

Apparently not, since you can't spell his name correctly.

But seriously, I liked him. But Niko still takes the cake for me.

I haven't played the game, but it would be hard to beat Tommy Vercetti, though Ray Liotta is the main reason he was so damn awesome. I also think Niko is pretty damn awesome

Nah, Vercetti and Niko are better protagonists. I also think every GTA since III are way better than RDR.

As for the topic? John Marston would be my favorite character from a R* game... at least from any I can think of quickly.

Oh, but it is. The stories have been nothing but dull, meaningless and empty since Vice City. All of them since VC have had enough content for maybe 2-5 hours of story... padded out to 25-40 with monotonous busy-work in between main story missions.

That's the problem. They have to take creative license with the material, thus it fall victim to the monotony of reality. The atmosphere was perfect, I can easily give it that... but that's also its main flaw, its too realistic for its own good. They designed everything around every-day activities... which are always boring. Marston was a good character, but they had him running around so much, it was difficult to empathize with him and his plight. Getting his ex-gang members was made out to be so urgent... but you could spend hours gambling away cash and doing other meaningless stuff... which ironically was the best part of the game.

Red Dead was a waste.

They had all the elements in place for a great game, but nearly all of the missions were bloody awful; boring, repetitive, etc. As with GTA4, the core gameplay and design is mostly acceptable for an open world game, but the mission design and game structure is painful and overbearing.

Rockstar fills their games with so much ****ing filler that it ends up being a depressing chore just getting through them.

How about Red Dead Restraint next time, you loose boweled sons of *******...

Yeah, they get rid of all the filler missions and then guess what..... People complain about the games length not being as long as the others. You can't please hardcore gamers they're always gonna whine about something (unless it's a game by one of their favorite developers, an in that case they can do no wrong). And I just plain disagree with you about your complaints with the mission structure and gameplay.

So there was never a point in the game where you said to yourself "oh great, more of this ****"? I had quite a few moments like that, personally.

I mean, I see your point about fans whining about the length, but come on, after so many games you'd think they would have learned how to inject some decent variety, or somehow cut down on the bull **** factor by a little bit.

I think most people would prefer a somewhat shorter game with good content all throughout over this sprawling, overly-ambitious sort of filler-packed slog that has become the signature 'Super Awsum Open World Game™'.

Also, for the record, the core gameplay in RDR is pretty good, and so is the presentation; the problem for me is what they built on that foundation, ie, an almost endless tower of filler and pointless slogging.

Tommy Vercetti! Marston or the characters in GTA IV or EFLC are the most well-rounded and realistic of the R* characters, yeah, they are probably the best in most subjective terms, but I will always have a soft spot for last-gen GTA. I don't think Red Dead is the best they have ever created. It had the best and most refined gameplay, the best graphics, arguably one of the best stories and all elements contained therein, but in the end there isn't enough to make me want to go back after the game is over. The open world serves the story very well, but there just wasn't much to do in the old west. GTA wins because anyone can pop that game in from any point and have fun with it. It's so easy to cause chaos and see how the world around you reacts, whether it's physics of cars blowing up, people running and screaming, cops chasing you... RDR has elements of that, but the setting for the world makes it so you can never really go too far with it. Also, as much as I really love westerns, I like modern more, and I think the next GTA, with the aforementioned refinements from RDR, WILL be the best thing R* has ever created.

It wasn't entirely about the protagonists considering there's a "and Red Dead Redemption" part on the title.

 So there is. I r pwned. :P I'll modify my initial response.

I think Marston is is the best protagonist of any Rockstar game I've played. I think RDR is one of the better R* games I've played, in the same class of personal favorites like :VC or :SA, but I'm not sure it'd get ranked ahead of either. I would put it ahead of GTAIV, though I really liked IV too.

That's a tough question to answer, since R* has so many great games under their belt. In terms of story, I would say RDR is their masterpiece. In terms of overall game... I just can't answer that.

I thought Vice City was their most fun game, but John Marston is their best character work. The RDR plot is too sloppy at times, but I admit I found the game to be fun.

My favorite character from Rockstar is Vic Vance form Vice City Stories.

My favorite game from Rockstar is Red Dead Redemption.

For people complaining about "filler" missions in RDR, it's a sandbox game. They all have tedious missions to complete. They are annoying to some but they are what the sandbox genre is based upon to make the game longer. I don't find them annoying and most the missions(hunting, treasure hunting, etc.) I find cool and make sense within the world they created. My problems with GTA IV(pidgeon hunting, multiplayer lobby, lack of co-op missions) they fixed with RDR which is why it's my #1 of all-time.

in a word... Yes. No rockstar game has ever achieved the type of polish, development and pure out entertainment as RDR. its their crowning achievment IMO. Vice city is second.

Its a great game, definitely the most immersive and realized made by them yet, and this is after GTA IV where small time civvies followed full day schedules and the world changed all over as you went through it.

Personally I think GTA III will never be forgotten as the jump into mature open world games, its the most revolutionary game ever made. Kind of surprising, if you told me before that the PS2 would house the most innovative game of all time I would have asked you where you got your stuff and how strong it is

Of course I always expected Nintendo or PC to be home to something that great before 2001.
