That Wii Music nonsense, PS Move, kinect, eye toy, etc was all doomed to failure from the start.
@R4gn4r0k: The Wii was a failure? A console that sold more than the PS3 and 360? A console that was such a failure that Microsoft and Sony reacted with motion control solutions of their own?
The Wii was never ever a failure. It sold the hell out of both PS3/Xbox 360 and still is, the king of last-gen sales. That's a fact.
You see you've got me all wrong, as I only want the gimmick known as VR to die in the gaming space.
Come on Daily, you really want to see VR dying out this fast? While VR may look like a Gimmick at the moment, but VR as a whole is now in a good position to be the next big thing. It's nothing like let's say Virtual Boy, Virtual Boy was so ahead of it's time, Nintendo didn't even know what to do with the tech at the time and now the technology we have now, VR can be the next hit wonder, it just takes time to catch the consumers eye.
There are many more practical uses for VR, like teaching aids for medical students etc. I only keep it real in the VR threads because it's enthusiasts are fucking nuts. So much so one of them created an alt to talk only VR and only positive for it, that wasn't you was it?
Actually, that would be AR, (HoloLens) not VR for that type of field stuff and I can tell you now HoloLens has really peak my interest. HoloLens isn't really meant for gaming (other then Minecraft) and I like to try it out whenever MS is ready to release it. I work in a Hospital field and I do a lot of charting since I'm an NP. Do I think both VR & AR are gonna be the future? Not really, but we as Humans always find ways to improve technology and making cool tech video games.
Edit: Just to clarify, I'm NOT an enthusiasts nor I'm a PC enthusiasts either. I'm just a guy who like to play video games, watch Anime, and also like trying things out in terms of new tech.
@davillain-: It's midnight here and I really couldn't be bothered with any of what you wrote, maybe tomorrow after I get home from work I might care enough lol.
Have a nice night :)

Its controls have failure written all over it.
Nintendo Virtual Boy was dead in less than a year.
Yeah, it probably has to be Virtual Boy. Though I'm not sure Nintendo invested nearly as much as Microsoft's $500 Million into it.
Obviously Kinect came in various bundles on both 360 and was required initially on Xbox One. I wonder how many people would have just bought a Kinect straight up?
Way too much salt being poured in this thread over the Kinect. The thing was an overhyped, barely functioning fiasco. MS banked on it so much, that it actually took away from game development on 360 to dedicate resources to that monstrosity. I'm ashamed of how much the gaming press fawned all over this thing with no cynicism toward the product whatsoever. People really drank the MS Kool-Aid way too hard last gen.
I keep having to remove the XBOX app from my PC every time theres an update to Win10. I hate that shit it makes me so embarrassed to have anything I game on associated with XBOX.
Anyway the biggest flop in gaming history has to be Games For Windows Live when PC gamers told Microsoft to shove their paid service up their arse.
As much as I wouldn't and didn't use one(I hate talking commands to my console or phone), I don't know how you can say it was a flop. It had it's Glory days on 360. It's a shame they had to ditch it on Xbox One, but they needed that extra 10% processing power I guess. Before my psvr, I had a camera for my PS4 which my 5 year old thought was cool... So $40 for it was fine. I'm sure a lot of kids and soccer moms who did their workouts at home loved the Kinect.
Are you going for the backhanded compliments king on these forums or something?

It's well known cows are the clowns of System Wars, that they call VR a success, and call the Kinect a flop, it's hilarious, oh and so you know I think the Kinect was crap for gaming also, having played only 2 games (Joy Ride/Gun Stringer) was enough for me to know that, but I don't need to put that shit on my face & hold 2 dildos to know that VR is not for me :)
Have a nice day :)
What foods out there have you not tried? Will you permanently dismiss them as failures and not for you, because you haven't tried them, therefore they must be objectively bad? That's the same logic you've been using for VR. You can't possibly have any kind of worthwhile opinion on VR without having tried it.
Want to know the big differences between Kinect and PSVR / other VR systems?
Bringing up "Cows" is pointless in this argument, because Microsoft are supporting VR themselves, and it's only a matter of time before Microsoft releases one of their Windows Mixed Reality headsets on Xbox One X and future Xbox consoles.
I wouldn't say it was a total failure. It was weird how for several years they forced it on the consumer and now they have completely dropped it. Ironically the move was thought to be a failure but with the rise of PS VR it is currently more relevant then the Kinect.
I think its ridiculous the X1X doesn't even have a kinect port and its $140 for the adapter.
Nothing flopped harder than the virtual boy. Honestly I think companies should wear flops as badges of honor. Shows you are trying to innovate lol
No, definitely not. PSVR is more of a flop than Kinect ever was. Kinect 1.0 sold really well on the 360. Not sure how 20+ million sold is a flop?

There is nothing to suggest PSVR is a flop.

I own a PSVR and agree that it is not a flop, but if 20+ million Kinect units being sold on the 360 is a flop, not even counting the X1's that were sold with the Kinect 2.0, then 2+ million PSVR being sold should also be considered a flop. All I am doing is comparing sales numbers of two peripherals.
You might want to consider the glorious Cell processor. The Cell was supposed to not only revolutionize gaming but computing and damn near bankrupted Sony.
Well speculation that it beat 360 in sales, even with a year head start by MS.
So Kinect(llol) it is!
PSVR is fucking awesome...and I own all systems
Its just expensive and impossible for people to see before buying...I had watched reviews and youtube vids and thought meh
Bought one on sale yesterday and it has blown my mind to be honest
Everyone I know with a reserved or fanboy opinion of VR have all changed their minds after trying my Vive, every single one. I have demoed my Vive to elderly people, disabled people, children with learning difficulties and even XBOX owners (lol, I know right).

That's how it works across the board. Most people who try high-end VR become fans and can see the potential.
Clearly something that has this effect on people has a future.

This. x1000. PSVR, and VR gaming in general, is revolutionary. Watching youtube vids or twitch VR gameplay or whatever is pointless unless you have already experienced VR. There is nothing like actually putting a headset on your head and getting into a solid, non-shovelware VR game. It is mind-blowing, to say the least.
@blueberry_bandit: Yadda, yadda, yadda, it's the same song and dance from you. All I want to know is why you don't post from your main account or is it banned???
@i_p_daily: Well let me be the one to say goodnight and I do hope you have a nice weekend as well :)
(Didn't know it's night in Aussie over there, it's morning in the U.S)
Just remember that whenever you talk to me, you're basically talking to someone in the future as i'm anywhere from 16-20hrs ahead of the US :)
@PSP107: The PSP has a larger library but PS Vita is totally worth the purchase. Soul Sacrifice and Silent Hill Book of Memories, I recommend.
The PS camera for PS2 flopped the whole video game camera industry. Xbox Kinect had solid applicable features. The standing video game development model, doesn’t have time for implicating Kinect features.
Pretty much, although PSVR will give it a run for its money soon.
Wii was terrible too, but at least it sold well.

Hardware that's consistently exceeding Sony's sales expectations, doing well for a 1st generation consumer product, and is in a state of growth with continued investments, funding, and interest in the industry. If you actually look at statistics, facts, absolutes, then PSVR and VR as a whole is only growing, not receding.
In terms of sales I guess the Kinnect wasn't a failure, although most of those sales were because it was a pack in with the 360/One.
But it was a HUGE failure in terms of actually being a fun, working add on. It just never worked (outside of dance games) and was some of the most wasted potential in gaming history. So from a sales standpoint, not a failure I guess. But it was a total failure in every other aspect.
@Heil68: if losing almost a 3rd of market share to your rival, have to abandon mobile, and sell off all kinds of assets just to stay afloat is a success then you are for sure a Cow.
The Cell is gamings greatest flop and it’s not even close.
so even with that it beat MS with a year heads start.

You are really trying HARD to cover up that buyers remorse. I have a Kinect 2 to sell you if you are interested.
Wiiu was a success, it was just under powered and poorly designed, but overall it was greater with warm welcome just didn't seem in line with Nintendo's views.
Kinect was a success outside the consumer sector, alot of the technology inside wasn't even readily available at a consumer affordable level, it was and still is ahead of its time just poorly introduced towards the consumer.
If you disagree please watch this video:https://youtu.be/xprbn7roQZE
I've seen Kinect systems sell fairly well, especially to kiddies (real kiddies, not the man-child ones). It may not mean much to the rest of us. But, to MS, a sale is a sale.
Anyway, I honestly don't think adults have the energy to play Kinect games the way kiddies do. So full of energy. They simply don't tire. ;)
Hate on it if you want, but I had many drunk parties where we played the Kinect Dancing game. And that ish was fun!
Also, my kids played Kinect sports and enjoyed the heck out if it. Kinect 1 was really good for its time and Kinect 2 was a lot more accurate. But my the time the 2 came out, the market was dead. Kinect did reach its potential, but it was fun while it lasted. From a business side, it surely allowed them to transition into AR and other technologies that all the big boy tech companies (Apple, Google &MS ) are chasing.
The problem with Kinect was that MS forced it into the box of every XB1 console which meant that MS had to split it's console Budget with Kinect. Kinect is one of the reasons MS used cheaper DDR3 instead of faster and more expensive GDDR3. DDR3 is also the reason MS had to stick ES Ram inside the XB1 to help with the lack of Bandwidth which in turn was the reason the GPU had less compute units in it than PS4. The XB1 SOC is actually bigger than PS4's SOC. If MS wouldn't have packed Kinect in the box the XB1 could have been faster and more powerful than PS4 for around the same price.
To answer TC's question, No I do not believe that Kinect was gaming's biggest Flop. The Jaguar, Atari 7800, Wii U, Sega 32X, Philips CDI, PS Move and several other Flops were much bigger than Kinect.
