There's nothing debatable about it. :|

I tire of this thought that the entire industry from developers to the review site/publications have just been completely wrong in the naming of this sub genre of the broader term RPG.

I'm not a lemming but Western games like Fable, Jade Empire, Fallout and the Elder Scrolls series are a lot of fun. I prefer them over JRPGs. I've already played a lot of JRPGs back on the Turbo Duo, Sega CD and SNES...The graphics are great these days, but it's feeling kind of stale...TekkenMaster606

I think it's not so much stale as... they're not trying very hard anymore. Besides to make it pretty.

The new Dragon Quest on PS2 was great I thought.

You could easily say the same about cows who haven't played any WRPGs (or RRPGs - real RPGs :D) - they're both stupid generalisations.
People mention KOTOR because it was one of the best RPGs that came out within the last few years...you would have realised that if you had played it.

the 360 have more JRPG/WRPG/RPG then the PS3 .Prid3r

Currently true, although there's bound to be a few hundred extremely generic JRPGs being churned out every year for the PS3...as usual.

JRPG's have no depth. Even Final Fantasy VII was shallow.
Play Planescape: Torment. One of the best WRPG's ever made.
Lilac_Benjie

I recently read an interesting article concerning why FF7 was considered to have a great story, despite being extremely generic and shallow: here it is.
They seem to mostly contribute FF7's popularity to Aeris' death, stating that it was the only RPG to kill off a well established and beloved character...the author of this article has obviously never played Planescape: Torment (which is, obviously, the greatest RPG ever).

I never owned a X-Box, but I have played Kotor 1, Kotor 2, Neverwinter Nights, Fallout, Fallout 2, Earthboudn, Morrowind, Baldur Gates, Tales of Sympathy. There is more, but if you saying 360 related, I just recently got mine and I will purchase any that come out on it.. But currently, none on 360 atm.

I have played rpg's of all kinds on all platforms. JRPG's are too cliche to be memorable. And KOTOR is loved by all because it is the best rpg ever with an amazing amount of customization and character development. On the plus side, it is also the best star wars game ever, which many videogamers appreciate too. I hope Mass Effect tops it though, and on the JRPG front I am excited for Lost Odyssey.

I've played quite a few RPGs in my time, and KOTOR is my favorite; actually, KOTOR's my favorite game of all time. I've completed most of the greats such as Resident Evil 4, Super Mario World, Ocarina of Time, Metroid Prime and what-not, but KOTOR still remains on top.

I prefer JRPGs as they have a greater focus on character development and story. WRPGs tend to have characters that are less developed to make way for more customizations and more gameplay options though. My fav of all time was xenogears, so that kinda says more about my inclination. Oh, and in asia, most of us probably think american brutes are pretty ugly, and we prefer stylistic caricatures. so there, JRPGs are asian RPGs, what do you expect? But yea, KOTOR was a great balance between the 2 pillars of gameplay and story. Though I do feel that we are attached to the characters only because we are also attached to the star wars lore. Remember jade empire? a new game with similar mechanics but different universe, and it seemed so boring to me. No surprise that KOTOR is being mentioned so much.

Jade Empire, or so I felt, had better characters. A lot of KOTOR's characters were forgettable, where as I remember nearly every Jade Empire party member. Both games had the obvious favorite (Kang the Mad, and HK-47, respectively), but I felt that the characters in Jade Empire had a greater contrast of history and personality, where as a lot of the KOTOR characters were an even grey. Obviously KOTOR had better gameplay, a better story, and what-not, but the characters simply weren't as memorable. :(

Quantity =/= Quality.

Also, there's probably more variation in the small number of Xbox RPGs than there are in the large number of PS2 'RPGs'.

are you serious? theres 1 turn based RPG on the Xbox, i think 2 turn based Tactics type games (which look awful), 1 or 2 might be a 1st Person Dungeon Crawlers, the rest are 3rd person Action / Dungeon Crawlers...

the only "quality" RPGs on the Xbox are the only ones mentioned in this thread so far.. Jade Empire, Fable, Elder Scrolls and KOTOR (all action RPGs, and i'm pretty sure all went on to the PC).... hell the Gamecube has more variation than the Xbox...

I love how RPG is quoted for what the PS2 offers. *shakes head*
