Topic... If not what is and why, you must support with actual reasoning ( I know, madness on SW) Don't post if you've never played Mass Effect...

My vote is that yes, it is the best game so far this gen on any console... it is the most complete in gameplay, story, and graphics... a beautiful game.

It gets my vote. I haven't enjoyed a game that much in a long time (since Shenmue 2). Bioshock is a close second though.

I played the first few levels on my cousins 360 and I didn't really care for it much. The story was looking pretty good though.

No, it's not that great. KOTOR was much better, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was much better, the witcher around the same. My vote goes to err...S.T.A.L.K.E.R. myself

No. I have played through it one and a half times.

It was a very good game, but not even in the top 10 this gen I'd say. The RPG elements were very lacking,as was the combat. The graphics were very nice, but the texture pop-in and framerate hitches were annoying.

But what really dissapointed me was the choice system. The choices you made had no long standing effect on the game at all. Most of the dialogue options were just choosing between slightly different ways to say the exact same thing. I've played old adventure games with better choices and moral systems, and of course The Witcher.

And as for the story,it was probably the best part. The characters were very convincing, but the poor dialogue system made me feel that I didn't really get the chance to know the characters all that well. Once I had finished my first play through,I knew everything there was to know in the game.

All in all,a solid game, but nothing spectacular.

I would say no. Gameplay was generic third person shooter, quite dissappointing.

My vote goes to Galaxy, then Bioshock.

i actually prefer the witcher to be honest. it suffers a bit from a dodgy translation in places (hopefully that will be greatly improved with the patch on may 16th) and theres a few other niggeling problems but overall its a better game imho. better, more believable characters. a more developed world and a story thats not really a battle about good and evil but its all shades of grey. alot of love also went into the games long development period and it really shows. the game has put a smile on my face alot more than ME has.

ME is still a crackin game mind but if i had to choose....it would be the witcher as best game so far this gen imho.

So only people who have played Mass Effect are permitted to comment? Why? This stipulation seems more appropriate... "Don't post if you haven't played every single game so far this gen..."

Have you really played every single game available, colmusterd28? If not, how can you say Mass Effect is the best? Just wondering. I know how much you love "actual reasoning," after all...

The interesting thing is Mass Effect was supposed to be a long, more mature and sophisticated RPG,but it failed in that regard, and then The Witcher came out of no where and took that title.

Bioshock was good but its ending was terrible so that looses its pick for me.

Personally uncharted was the best game this gen with the second best pacing i have ever experienced in a game(first being half life 2). It had its small flaws but it delivered a experience that was action packed andengrossedyou in its story and characters.

Best portable game this gen for me is easily patapon or GoW:COO. Both were amazing games, with both worth replays and patapon having tones ofre playability

ME is just ok.It has so many problems, the side missions are a bore and some of the characters are just flat out lame and generic.Even with all that though it's still a fairly good game.

But Galaxy and Brawl own anything that has come out on the 360.Come on Bioshock? That game was so easy it got repetitive.

On consoles.. yea I'd say so.. I'd even put LO in the top 5 for consoles as well. I just tried it myself for a couple hours.. good fun( for me to think it's fun it has to have done something right.. I depise JRPGS, LO and FF7 are the only ones I enjoyed :S), which makes me want my 360 working now.

Totally agree, and The Witcher hit me as a total suprise as well, pretty fresh take on an RPG. Would even throw Crysis in there above ME given how much fun the nanosuit was at times. In terms of sheer scope and story, Mass Effect is still a really impressive game and probably the most fun I've had with my 360.

Assassin's Creed got repetetive, Mass Effect was a bit samey if you played it for a good long while, the conversation system wasn't overtly brilliant and the choices weren't that affecting. You still had pretty much the same ending.

Definitely not, the story was well written and the character models were impressive but the gameplay was nothing special and it's RPG effects were pretty piss poor. I expected more since this was my first Bioware game and they been getting nothing but high praise.

Mass Effect was great and the framerate problems didn't really bother me too much so I don't hold that against it. But the planet exploration could have been more fleshed out if a team of monkeys was assigned making the planets... For 99% of the planets(IE non main quest planets) it seems like Bioware just waved a terrain editing tool over the map that was their "planet", threw a couple objectives randomly and threw in one "Base" that was simply the same one recycled and called it a day. The story was good even if it was a bit cliche. Combat was sort of satisfying but lacked depth. RPG elements were hardly even there...

The Witcher was much better. The combat in the Witcher had depth to it with all the different stances. RPG elements may have been a tiny bit weak for me but whatever... Questing in The Witcher is actually satisfying and doesn't feel like you are doing the same thing over and over. The environments were fairly diverse and kept things interesting. The Story was almost as good and was more satisfying because it wasn't simply a black and white story, but one with all shades of grey and that made making decisions much more important. It was also a much longer game.

Other games that deserve mention are Crysis which was the best FPS this gen IMO. STALKER which was the most atmospheric game. Bioshock which had a good story and was overall a lot of fun. World in Conflict which had a good story for an RTS and the MP was fantastic. Sins of a Solar Empire because any game that can make you play for 14 hours in one sitting is obviously good. Lost Odyssey which was amazing.

I have to say it... I think Mass Effect is one of the most overrated videogames I have ever seen critically wise, and fanbase wise. I was very hyped up for the game, but it was a huge dissapointment for me. In fact, Mass Effect is just about the only game that has ever dissapointed me so much, or made me think more then twice about the praise.

The characters were incredibly boring, with most of them having no interesting backstory, especially when compared with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The story itself was interesting for a bit, but some of the creatures and enemies felt a little thrown in.

The dialogue wheel was just not very interesting. It was always "Top for good, middle for neutral, bottom for evil", and either way, the conversation would usually end up with the same results for the character, just with their feelings a little more hurt (Although there are some good exceptions...).

My choices barely affected anything within the game. However, there were two good moments where I did have to make an important choice, but I wont be able to find out what the results are until the sequel.

The texture pop-ins were annoying, but they were at least bearable until you started talking with someone, in which case their faces would become incredibly blurry and look like some big blob of flesh

The combat felt really uninteresting, and got incredibly repetitive after a while. Hit that right trigger as fast as you can, then unleash some of your skills, of which half were useless. Biotic skills were very cool to use, but even they got boring after about 15 uses per planet.

Mentioning the planets back there, I realized another thing... The planets are incredibly generic. You either get stuck with a grass, desert/lava, or blizzard variety. And they were all the same, with some minerals, salvage, and a building that you could have sworn you were just inside on the previous planet. Come to think of it, I would reccommend to any future purchasers to avoid the side-planets as best you can, and to concentrate on the main campaign.

The enemies seem to be of two families- those who shoot you, and those who shoot you, but try to rush in a melee attack if you get close. Well, to be fair there were some cannons and robotic drones, as well as the gett hoppers and the rachni, but mostly it's just the two types I mentioned earlier.

The Universe of Mass Effect was incredibly dull, and felt like it was missing some degrees of inspiration. If there is a mystery to any question in the game, it's the Mass Effect. All about the Mass Effect. I can tell that it is probably the biggest revoloution since electricity, but is there anything in the game that isn't explained by the Mass Effect?

The game had great music and an interesting story, but otherwise the game seemed to fall flat on anything else it promised. I will not call anyone blind for liking the game, but I do agree with the Eurogamer review: "Mass Effect is most definetley a great game with an awful lot going for it-but one that doesn't deserve unquestioning praise".

AssCreed aside, Mass Effect was the most dissapointing game last year.

The game began with no tutorial, and left you trying to figure out how the entire game works on your own. Thats poor game design. The side quests are all the same, land on baren planet with different weahter effects, go to point A, shoot B, etc.. rinse and repeat for all the boring side missions. These were the most dissapointing side quests I ever played in an rpg, even jade empire had better side quests. The male character did a horrible job playing sheppard - all his lines felt forced and akward. Frame rate prombles also ruined the game for me, same with texture popping. Its a good thing its coming to teh PC, maybe they can fix all these short commings, and then it can be a decent game. But its by far Biowares most dissapointing rpg.. doesnt even come close to KOTOR.

On a side note, did anyone else get this glitch? Apparently the enemy loot scales to your level, just like in Oblivion. For some reason however, scaling didn't seem to work with quests. One quest on Noveria only gave me 750 credits-which was very strange for me at the time because I litterally made over 8000 credits just by killing a simple Geth trooper.

I'm starting to feel that it is a likely possibility that the game was rushed. It's still a strong possibility that the next two games can be fantastic, so I'm not going to reccommend everybody to abandon all hope on the series yet.

Edit: My picks for Game of the Year would either be Super Mario Galaxy or Bioshock. Both offered me a surreal world (Or in the case of Super Mario Galaxy, worlds:P) that helped me get away from my normal life. It's good believe that there is such places to escape to (Or in the case of Bioshock, without the wide-spread destruction and murderous splicers).

Well I rented it but was only able to play it for six hours but from what I played of it it was just so so. Lots of tech problems and the planets I explored were barren and the menu system should have been better thought out since it required such micro management.

Here's my top games so far this gen: SMG, Lost Odyssey, Bioshock, MP3.

No. Mass Effect is a great game but it's not the best game of this gen. It's the best game of last gen. People don't realize that it was released as a regular XBox game but because of low sales they waited and then released later on. It's a rare title but I think you can still find it on E-bay for like hundreds of dollars. My friend had a copy but then lost it or his cousin took it.

dear peace sign,

there wasn't an ounce of hate in my OP. I just posed a question that I was looking for some intellegent debate on, nothing more. Unfortuanatly, like ficticious rrod threads you and your cow brethren seem to constantly fuel, i was looking to avoid a barage of fakies claiming the game sucks because of something they read on a cow thread... Since the thread is based on your experience with ME, if you've never played it, than kindly see youself and your zero credibility to the door...

Thats pretty shaky to call ME as the best game this generation consider gamespot gave RPGOTY to Persona 3 and the reader's choice for RPG was The Witcher.

It was already a pretty big stretch to call ME the best RPG of the year.

Absolutely not. Funny you should use the word complete. That game had more technical problems then any game I have played thus far. Mass Effect provides a deep universe, but the storyline itself is actually really linear.

Absolutely not. Funny you should use the word complete. That game had more technical problems then any game I have played thus far. Mass Effect provides a deep universe, but the storyline itself is actually really linear.NAPK1NS

linear story...? expand. I loved the story. i can't wait to see what they do with it.

Topic... If not what is and why, you must support with actual reasoning ( I know, madness on SW) Don't post if you've never played Mass Effect...

My vote is that yes, it is the best game so far this gen on any console... it is the most complete in gameplay, story, and graphics... a beautiful game.

It's easily my favourite so far. I've played it through three times and will probably play through it three more times to play all the different specialists. What's unusual is that the more I play it, the more I enjoy it. Can't wait for ME2.

The story line is pretty basic. There is a ton of little knick-knacks that fans of the series can suck on, but the a actual story isn't the best I've seen. People mistake a deep universe for a good story.

Not only is the story very basic but it's the same mechanic as KotOR II. It's just an illusion of not being linear when it actually is.
