I have to say it... I think Mass Effect is one of the most overrated videogames I have ever seen critically wise, and fanbase wise. I was very hyped up for the game, but it was a huge dissapointment for me. In fact, Mass Effect is just about the only game that has ever dissapointed me so much, or made me think more then twice about the praise.
The characters were incredibly boring, with most of them having no interesting backstory, especially when compared with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
The story itself was interesting for a bit, but some of the creatures and enemies felt a little thrown in.
The dialogue wheel was just not very interesting. It was always "Top for good, middle for neutral, bottom for evil", and either way, the conversation would usually end up with the same results for the character, just with their feelings a little more hurt (Although there are some good exceptions...).
My choices barely affected anything within the game. However, there were two good moments where I did have to make an important choice, but I wont be able to find out what the results are until the sequel.
The texture pop-ins were annoying, but they were at least bearable until you started talking with someone, in which case their faces would become incredibly blurry and look like some big blob of flesh
The combat felt really uninteresting, and got incredibly repetitive after a while. Hit that right trigger as fast as you can, then unleash some of your skills, of which half were useless. Biotic skills were very cool to use, but even they got boring after about 15 uses per planet.
Mentioning the planets back there, I realized another thing... The planets are incredibly generic. You either get stuck with a grass, desert/lava, or blizzard variety. And they were all the same, with some minerals, salvage, and a building that you could have sworn you were just inside on the previous planet. Come to think of it, I would reccommend to any future purchasers to avoid the side-planets as best you can, and to concentrate on the main campaign.
The enemies seem to be of two families- those who shoot you, and those who shoot you, but try to rush in a melee attack if you get close. Well, to be fair there were some cannons and robotic drones, as well as the gett hoppers and the rachni, but mostly it's just the two types I mentioned earlier.
The Universe of Mass Effect was incredibly dull, and felt like it was missing some degrees of inspiration. If there is a mystery to any question in the game, it's the Mass Effect. All about the Mass Effect. I can tell that it is probably the biggest revoloution since electricity, but is there anything in the game that isn't explained by the Mass Effect?
The game had great music and an interesting story, but otherwise the game seemed to fall flat on anything else it promised. I will not call anyone blind for liking the game, but I do agree with the Eurogamer review: "Mass Effect is most definetley a great game with an awful lot going for it-but one that doesn't deserve unquestioning praise".
