Poll Is Metal Gears Of Solids a bad stealth series? (54 votes)

It pretty clearly is 43%
Metal Gear Solid is a well written with lots of gameplay 57%

My friends, ignoring old classics like the Thief series, arguably the greatest of all stealth games or the also well received Splinter Cell series, with Chaos theory being the high point. Are titles like Dues Ex: Human Revolution and Dishonored vastly superior stealth titles? And in general, games well more deserving the praise they receive? I feel this is the case. But I need your opinion, as it is generally excellent and among the best in the gaming world.

MGS has a great zany story, but such games as Splinter Cell are better when it comes down to stealth.

Metal Gear's Stealth is better than Assassin's Creed's.

i know i'm going to get a lot of hate for this, while MGS does have finely tuned stealth mechanics, it doesn't give me the sense of impending danger that games like The Last of Us do.

It's not a bad stealth series, it's just not the best there is. Splinter Cell did stealth a LOT better at the time but MGS is a greater franchise overall.

No. It's a game that wanted to balance action with stealth, and in that regard it did very well. It wasn't pure like a Splinter Cell was, and it wasn't as remotely satisfying as Thief was. All those are true, but for what MGS wanted to do it was very well done. By that notion Hitman would be a poor stealth game since you can run around shooting shit in a chicken suit on mardi gras.

I wouldn't call Metal Gear stealth.. I mean it feels more action than stealth + the stealth is kinda on minimum (?) they didn't over do it so i'm cool with it. AI isn't that smart so it's not a pain in the ass.. Over all is a fun and interesting franchise.

In terms of Stealth, MGS is a really good series. In terms of creativity, presentation, story, characters, boss battles and significance in video game history, it's incredible. Other games might employ more realistic stealth gameplay, but none of them will be so widely respected 25 years later.

MGS does what it sets out to do. Espionage. It has an agent like feel. Much like games such as Goldeneye and PErfect Dark, it has stealth and action, most of the time leaving that up to you. Of course MGS focuses more on stealth than those games.

MGS is amazing and I cannot wait for MGSV! I never feel like i Get that Agent feel anymore, and it is just crazy run and gun action or pure stealth.

I keep thinking I should give the series another try because I really haven't given it much of a chance, but every time I turn it on, I am done after about an hour. The gameplay just feels really weird to me, and I can't get into it.

metal gear solid 4 is the pinnacle for stealth games, it beats out chaos theory and hitman blood money by miles in terms of gameplay,

if it wasn't such a lag fest, online could've been much more

Metal Gear Solid really isn't a stealth franchise.

Games that force you to do battle with giant mechs that can shoot nuclear missiles are not stealth titles.

Metal Gear pretty much invented the stealth genre but sometime down the line they became the new Gran Turismo. And I don't mean that in a bad way, I say that Metal Gear's stealth mechanic are kind of archaic by now but directed at certain audience. MGSV seems like it will improve greatly on that aspect but in the wrong way by casualising it a lot. =/

stealth games would not of become main stream if the likes of metal gear solid didn't come out on the ps1, it paved the way for people to want more stealth games, which in turned allowed developers to risk more in there games,

I like the Splinter Cell series and having played MGS 3 for my very first MGS, I just didn't like it. Feels weird as a stealth game not to mention weird characters.

didn't MGS create the stealth genre on the NES? not that that makes it any better than any other franchises that proceeded it but MGS did put the genre in motion. so for that, it deserves its props.

I cant believe in what I'm hearing... I'm a MGS fan and Splinter Cell fan and whoever is saying SC has better stealth mechanics than MGS is so wrong on so many levels, its not even funny...

Lets start with the obvious: A.I.

SC A.I must be one of the dumbest I've ever seen. Currently I'm replaying the HD versions of the trilogy and I'm baffled at how dumb it is. Even MGS1 A.I., a game way older than the 1st SC is better. Its ridiculous. They dont see you when you're right in front of them just because its "slightly" dark (let alone the fact THREE green google eyes are staring at them...). If you point your gun at the back of a guard, and then they trun around, they'll start shooting you out of nowhere. Do the same thing on MGS2 and what happens? the guard drops his gun and raises his arms in surrender... yeah. And what is a good stealth game without a good A.I.?

2nd: Old SC games are linear as fvck. Its actually kinda ironic seeing current gamers complaining about linear games, and praising old games like the original SC trilogy while bashing Conviction and Blacklist when both these games are obviously more open than them. All MGS games have had open areas where you could explore. A stealth game must face the player with open choices, wich SC games dont.

Seriously, lets put down the nostalgic googles and use some logic here. Even in stealth MGS > SC. Cant speak about thief, cause my experience with that series is little. Only played a couple of hours of Deadly Shadows.

seriosuly? Because it has a couple of action sequences is not a stealth series? With the exception of MGS4, 90 percent of MGS gameplay force you to be stealthy. Its a stealth series, and the best I've played. Its not even debatable

The first, no. The rest, most definitely.

Metal Gear Solid is much better known as it's subtitle: "Tactical Espionage Action"

Sure, ghost runs are possible and net high rankings upon completion, but the most fun is had when messing around with activating alarms and going into hiding and messing with the cronies. MGS has always been about the presentation, not necessarily the gameplay.

Castle Wolfenstein (1981) was the first true "stealth" game. Metal Gear (1987) came well after it. It surprises me how uninformed so many people are regarding the genre.

ahh didn't know that. you can lay off the snob factor though, there's a reason why i started my post with a question. i wasn't 100% sure and never claimed to be. it's still safe to say that MGS is one of the forefathers of the stealth genre. not everyone has the time to study the "stealth" genre like you obviously do. now go do something with your boring life in montana. lol.

Being surprised at the general lack of knowledge regarding the genre makes me a snob? Defensive much? I just find it surprising that so few people have ever heard of where the genre actually started.

And then you devolve the conversation into petty name-calling and assumptive insults. I live in Canada, and I don't "study" anything about gaming, I just like to stay informed as to where some of my favourite genres began. It's like talking about shooters and saying they started with Halo. Metal Gear Solid (not Metal Gear) was a major evolutionary step, but it wasn't the original point where it all started. It's good to know these things.

The main thing MGS got wrong for stealth was the top down, isometric view. Something SC didn't. That made a huge difference.

It's impossible to be stealthy when you can't see the environment and the enemies that are 4 meters away from you. When I played MGS3 it was just plain aggravating, impossible to stealth unless you get caught several times until you learn the map and enemies positions. Getting caught several times just to learn that though beats the point of a stealth game.

SC did stealth better. Having a clear view of your surroundings is extremely important for a stealth game.

I think Chronicles of Riddick is one of the best stealth titles ever and no one has brought it up so far. Btw Metro series, Crysis 1, Far Cry 1 or Ghost Recon Future Soldier are not less of stealth games MGS is. MGS is generally a hodgepodge of ideas, not purely a stealth game but not far from it either, though its approach is too wacky to be taken seriously in stealth department whereas it takes itself too seriously as far as story is concerned.

It's very debateable. 90 percent of the game does not force you to be stealthy as you can pretty much shoot your way out of most situations. It's not like Splinter Cell where in lots of missions if you are spotted you get a "mission failed" screen. THAT'S forcing you to be stealthy. That also isn't very good. As much as I like Splinter Cell I hate that crap.

MGS is more of a spy game; espionage as someone said earlier. It has lots of stealth elements but it isn't requirement in most cases.

Calm the **** down. Holy shit.

I am surprised, yes, because more people should know a tad more about the history and development of gaming. And I disagree that MGS is synonymous with the stealth genre, as it doesn't do stealth well, and other games, such as the Thief series are significantly more important to it's evolution over the years. MGS merely brought it mainstream success.

Yeah, and taking out Cardbox or whatever the hell it's called, out of no where, put it over and the guard will just ignore you without asking where the **** did this drum/cardbox came from is very good AI, right? And the googles in SC is more of an iconic thing, they don't supposed to glow in the dark.

Try pointing the gun towards the enemy with a distance of ten steps and they too start shooting you. MGS is no steath game, was.

Metal Gear Solid really isn't a stealth franchise.

Games that force you to do battle with giant mechs that can shoot nuclear missiles are not stealth titles.

seriosuly? Because it has a couple of action sequences is not a stealth series? With the exception of MGS4, 90 percent of MGS gameplay force you to be stealthy. Its a stealth series, and the best I've played. Its not even debatable

Is this some kind of joke? You can literally play every MGS title going guns blazzing, apart from some of the introductory part. Just go and see the walkthroughs of MGS 1-3 on youtube where player used minimal stealth.

It's not a bad stealth series, it's just not the best there is. Splinter Cell did stealth a LOT better at the time but MGS is a greater franchise overall.

Oh yes, how can I forget it. Such a fine game it was for its time.

This.

You have to play it smart, but it is totally possible, especially in 4.

Nailed it.

There are other games that so stealth far better, and don't suddenly require you to go full action game at a moment's notice.

didn't MGS create the stealth genre on the NES? not that that makes it any better than any other franchises that proceeded it but MGS did put the genre in motion. so for that, it deserves its props.

Castle Wolfenstein (1981) was the first true "stealth" game. Metal Gear (1987) came well after it. It surprises me how uninformed so many people are regarding the genre.

That's highly debatable. 005 came out the same year as Castle Wolfenstein. And according to Guinness, 005 is the first stealth game. But if we want to go all the way back, then we could go back to the proto-stealth elements of Pac-Man, which Kojima actually credited as an influence on Metal Gear's stealth game design.

Either way, regardless of what we classify as the first stealth game, there's no doubt that Metal Gear revolutionized and popularized the stealth genre. It's pretty much like the Super Mario Bros of stealth games, while 005 and Castle Wolfenstein are like the Donkey Kong's of the genre.
