I'm wondering because it seems to be shoved aside by Nintendo... it's my personal favorite Nintendo franchise but Nintendo barely makes any. At least a 3DS one would be great...

Other M isn't really a metroid game to me.

it has the potential to be so much better. When I hear about what Retro wanted to do with the series (sans Sakamoto's veto), I literally sigh for what could have been.

I don't think so....it seems to have a good fanbase. Nintendo does that with a lot of their games, they only make like 1 or 2 a gen, like with Smash Bros they only make 1 each gen, but that does not make Smash Bros a bad selling series.

But I don't see why you really care, I don't see how sales affect one's enjoyment of a game. If you like it that's all that matters, hell some of the best games I ever played didn't sell very well, like Shadow of The Colossus.

I really like it for how it is already... it's pretty awesome... i just find it ashamed that it's like in the shadow of other nintendo franchises... even kirby get's more sunshine than metroid.

They need to make it more accessible in order for more people to want to buy it. But they should do the Super Guide thing, so it can be hard and complex for the rest of us.

It's sold 16 million TOTAL in its 26 years on the market. For context, a single Mario Kart or New Super Mario Bros. game outsells the entire Metroid series.

The question is not that it is a bad-selling series, but whether one that has broad appeal. Many elements of the franchise does not appeal to many gamers, and I was surprised several years ago that Japanese materials for Super Smash Bros. Brawl had to introduce Samus since Metroid is a lesser known series in Japan.

metroid was never really hard to begin with. maybe the first metroid prime but that game was only hard because the controls were atrocious. it just blows my mind that they haven't released 2d mentroid games for the DS. the touch screen would be amazing. imagine always having your map on screen and just tapping the powerups you want to use. damnit nintendo :x

It's been years since I've been really had this info off hand and I've spent over half an hour just now trying to find the info but I cannot for some reason. The reason is that the truth came out in small bits here and there about how the games were developed and so there wasn't ever any big articles about it. I mainly got the info second hand from bloggers like Malstrom. Sakamoto used his veto power excessively and viewed(and continues to view) Samus as a perfect, noble person. Retro wanted to make her into a bounty hunter, as in you would actually accept bounty missions for money (sounded similar to Mass Effect actually), but Sakamoto thought of that as beneath Samus, and that she would only do missions for the good of the Federation. bah, I'm going to keeping looking for a while. Geez that's a bit embarrassing it's like the 2nd time this week that this has happened.

Its not a bad selling series, its just one of the lesser popular series despite all the love it gets on the internet. Nintendo has alot of franchises but since Nintendo only has small developers and studios under its wings, it can only give a select number of franchises the attention they deserve at a time.

*edit* sure, you say a 3rd party developer could make the game for Nintendo, but after Metroid The other M, I think thats the last thing we want. I mean sure the game wasnt bad and I personally liked it, but it had too many quality problems if you ask me.

I think in comparison to what it could sell or what games nintendo could also make, it doesn't stack up. I mean if you were nintendo, why make a Metroid game that will sell one million when you could spend even less money and make a Mario game or Kirby game and have it sell ten times the amount of copies. There is a reason Nintendo celebrated Kirbys 25th and not Metroid

Which is sad considering how fantastic Prime Series and Super Metroid were.

I think Next time we see metroid it will be something to make it more Marketable. Like a Metroid Starfox crossover game. Or something like that.

Comparitively with other games in its genre and other 1st party titles from Nintendo, yes, it's not as robust at retail. But it still sells incredibly well when you look at the whole industry.

Three ambitious 3D iterations, on a home console even, is the opposite of "shoved aside"

It's even one of the 12 attractions in Nintendo Land.

Metroid sales figures are always depressing. If you compare it critically it's top tier. Metroid's up there with Halo, GTA, Mario, Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, and Half-Life. Metroid Prime ranked above all those last gen, actually. It's really a shame it struggles to get a small fraction of the sales those games get, though.

Is Metroid a bad selling series? Yes. Absolutely when you consider how many awards and how much critical acclaim and media attention the series receives.

Metroid is an experience unlike any other. Why it doesn't sell, however, is due to it not having any immediate gimmick. Metroid doesn't just grabs you and pull you in.It's a slow paced game that slowly drags you along. If you look at any gameplay trailers, it looks like you're just walking through corridor after corridor, just shooting things and turning into a ball every once in awhile. It's takes a good 45 minuets to an hour to get immersed into Metroid. For a lot of people, that's just too much time.

I'll always love the series, but sales aren't its strong suit.

It sells fairly well typically the games are million sellers or more. In context of Nintendo's library of games though can see why it wouldn't be top priority, games that sell in the lower millions for Nintendo is kind of poor.

I've given up hope on the Metroid series, because Nintendo isn't even trying. I'd kill to see a 2D Super Metroid-esque title on the 3DS. Maybe if Nintendo actually put some effort into MARKETING their wares instead of simply quietly slipping them on the shelves it would sell better. Metroid is a brilliant concept with much potential so I don't blame the game if it fails at retail, I blame Nintendo for not getting out there and agressively pushing it to profit.

From what I've gathered over the years, Metroid doesn't garner as much sales as the other Nintendo Titles.

The Best Selling one I believe was Metroid Prime.

Although I wouldn't say it was a terrible sold series, it just doesn't get as much as Mario or Zelda.

That is unless someone says something different, then I might be inclined to believe them since the stuff I read about Metroid was YEARS ago when Prime 3 came out.

The series is still around so yes it sells to Nintendo's expectations. Unlike other titles like Star Fox that they've abandoned. Ugh, and your title makes my head hurt. "BAD SELLING?" Surely there was a better way to state your question sir.

So we might not get another metroid game for a while because of other M ? BS:( they handed the project over to another team.. why should that affect it:?

boggus man.. I think nintendo should have specific teams for their franchises that can focus on bringing out the best in them or their genre.

The best selling Metroid in Japan was Metroid Fusion; I don't know if Other M passed it in Japan on not.

Japan tends to like the linear Metroid games while the West likes the non-linear Metroid titles.

It's a good series, Nintendo just doesn't market it on the level they market it's other heavy hitters like Zelda and Mario, it's sad really. I think skipping out on releasing a Metroid game on the N64 really hurt the series later on down the road, it all started there.

I still have hopes that Retro is making that game right now for WiiU, it would be damn awesome...you are talking about the semi Open World concept right?

we can assume that this is the case, but it's not like anyone from retro spoke out against nintendo so we can't know for certain. Metroid Corruption could have been an open world game similar to what Mass Effect 2 became based on the bits I've heard. Retro's just wasn't used very much, more as an extension of nintendo than a dev in their own right. This is supported by all the high ranking creative credits going to nintendo staff, not just for the Prime series but for DKC returns as well.

Other M was total crapola. Samus being "allowed" to use certain items at certain times. It casualized the series robbing it of the features fans loved.

No it wouldn't. It would give the series commercial relevance and thus a future. A few questions, just to get an idea about how you came up with your idea that accessibility would "ruin" the game: 1. When did you start playing the series? With what game? 2. Which is your favorite game in the series? How many times have you beaten it? 3. What did you think of Other M? 4. Did you play Donkey Kong Country Returns? Did you beat it? 5. What is your opinion on speed running? And a final question, that for me requires more than just mere statement... how would accessibility to the average gamer "ruin" the series, especially with the utilization of Nintendo's "Super Guide"? Answer me these questions and maybe I'll take your point seriously.

I don't understand why people hate the Super Guide. In SS and NSMB I was never forced to use it and never did use it. I think in Metroid it would be a great idea. I think what Retro did with the Prime series, though, where a room would be revealed on the map, is a good way of encouraging exploration while giving a hint as to where the next objective is. The next game should do that, but maybe just give an option to reveal the entire route instead.

I agree also for Super Mario Galaxy 2; I died many times but I still never used the Cosmic Guide even though Rosalina showed up a few times and asked me if I needed it.

It allows Nintendo to make the games harder without alienating people that aren't good at the game; If they aren't good at the game they can use the super guide and see how to beat that part also they will be further so they can actually see the end of the game instead of quitting and never going back to finish the game.
