not long ago someone gave reputable statistics that sony was worth more than microsoft.
guess i'll have to personally look into this

all of sony's ratios are not looking good as of their last Q financial report, but their Asset book worth is a good amount over microsofts, but this does not mean they are worth more as microsoft's assets are for the most part comprised of equity where sony's are debt

no they are correct but assets does not mean worth, as the accounting equation as posted last page is: ASSETS = LIABILITIES + SHAREHOLDER EQUITY (or worth) so assets - liabilities = worth i may have written it out wrong last time, but it is 7 am and i am a bit drunk

Legally - no. Financially - yes. - However Microsoft would never want to buy Sony. Sony is a gigantic unprofitable nightmare still dealing with series-after-series of corporate restructuring and company streamlining. I can't imagine any company wanting to walk in and fix up their competitor.

*sigh* revenue is not the same as profit. If you are selling expensive items to make as well as sell then your revenue might be very high but your profit margin very slim (or in Sony's case your losses may be huge), whereas if you sell something thats cheap to make but you sell for much more then your revenue will be less but your profits much larger (ie Microsoft) Nintendo, for example, last I looked was worth more than Sony.

M$ could easily purchase Sony, but it wouldn't make sense and it wouldn't get SEC backing. And stop posting Sony assets without posting their debt. Also assets are never sold for the assessed price. They are often sold for MUCH less (20-40 cents on the dollar). Accountants inflate asset numbers for collateral to cheaper loans.

Considering that the Japanese wont even buy Sony products anymore (thier latest series of just about anything, has been faulty to a degree), it is possible that they could in theory, they wont or cant tho, they are not allowed, and who wants to buy a sinking ship?

The main reason is: Sony has to push technology in order to sell products, if said rescearch, or the tech has haults, it is billions out the window (happensquite often, not just to Sony).

Sony has made some huge leaps, but some of those leaps turned out non profitible, andSony does not carry the weight people seem to think. in Tvs Samsung and Philips sell better overall in the entire Asia and Europe, I think in the US aswell.

Sonys music labels are losing money on the MP3 market (sucked up by the Apple corp.) They tryied to make a PC line, I betmost peopleherenever seen a sony computer.

The movie industry is losing money alltogether.

So the bottomline is that nearly all Sony branches are losing money.

Then there are the Japanese Work Morals, which leads to restructures of branshes quite often, because Sony does not want to lay off personnel (a noble goal).

You see...Everytime Sony makes a decicion it can make or break huge parts of Sony.

Microsoft however are entirely different. MS makes a program, it is expencive yes, but whenthe programming is done, the rest is insanely cheap, a windows disk is cheap to manefacture, in contrast to a Sony TV, and often give a way bigger revenue per disk (1 sold windows disk nets a higher potential revenue then a sony tv). Where as Sony needs to pay for componants, bots, and manufactureing plants, and tvs have to be retrofitted to fit the systems around the world. a Tv is sold for more, but when the bills are paid, I do think MS earns more on thier windows disks.

And MS have a higher buyer base, because most people are going to use a Windows in thier pc, and there are an insane amount of pcs out there.

MS game division is different ofcourse, this gen MS seems to have used dumping prices to make marketshare (they did make a revenue tho) a smart move to get into the industry.

Sony NEEDSto find new tech to save thier company as it is now, they are not at the bring of bankrupsy yet, butunless they knock out a tv (or the like)that by far surpasses the competitions products, things are not gonna look good

It would be cool to see Microsoft get into the hardware business in some things instead of branding their name onproducts like Zune (Toshiba), X360 (Various) and Fusion car audio, but I have no idea whose hardware that is.

Definitely not. You must remember, that Microsoft is pretty much in a monopoly for operating systems and offer many overpriced applications, on top of whatever the hell it does online with Bing.com and all that. Sony faces stiff competition in all fields it is in. Sony definitely does not make more revenue than Microsoft.

Actually Sony does make more revenue. Microsoft makes far more profit though. A easy way to think of revenue Vs profit. Think if someone earned $400 during the week working. That is the revenue. Their check is only $290 though after all the taxes. That is profit. When Sony sells a TV for say $1000 that is the revenue from that TV. The will not keep all of that though. There is taxes, shipping cost, store cut, hardware such as the parts cost to make the TV, and many many other costs. They could be left with $200 and that is their profit out of the $1000 revenue. Microsoft makes far far more profit.

One of the problems here is that Sony's products are just more visable so since people see them more and think Sony is larger. For example you walk into Best Buy and you see these big Sony TVs. At that same Best Buy it is not as in year face a lot of the Microsoft products being sold. 95% of the PCs being sold there will have a couple Microsoft products from the OS to Money,Word, and so on. MS makes money of of each o those products. So a PC that has 3 MS products installed then MS will get money for all 3 of them. Software just the way it works is more profitable. Depending on the version of Windows it can cost several hundred dollars. There is far less costs selling the software then TVs and whatnot. Can ship far more at a time, far less physical components. It just needs a disc, a box and some shrink wrap. Even then MS sells a lot just thru digital downloads and you of course can not do that to TVs. In the end MS is able to get far more profit from their revenue.

Just think how many PCs are used from personal, work, gaming. Almost all of those PCs will have at least one Microsoft software installed. Every house almost has at least one TV but no where near will all of them be a Sony TV.

according to forbes sony make 3.7 billion profit and Microsoft make 17.23 billion :O so financially Microsoft could buy out sony's gaming division, if not sony themselves as sony's market value is 17.23 billion so microsoft could buy sony with one year's profits :O

Zaibach

High quality products? They are getting beat in just about every field they are in. TVs are getting beat by Samsung. Gaming they are getting beat by Nin. I don't even see Sony Walkmans anymore after Apple came out with the Ipod. Dell and HP pretty much killed off Sony's Vaio PCs. Sony products use to be high quality at reasonably good prices. Now they are just over priced mediocre products living off the perception of what the brand name use to be.

My guess is its out of date. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/15/business/global/15sony.html losses of $1.03 billion for the 2008 financial year, with $1.26 loss expected for this year which ends in March 2010.

Sony is a diverse company that produces high quality products buying them out would be a against microsoft's policies.

sleepingzzz

getting beat by your competition doesnt mean your products arent high quality, toyota sells more than aston martins does that mean toyotas are better quality than aston martins? All my sony products outlive most of my other electronics - fact - my ps3 will outlive my 360 my sony earphones are over a year old.

Microsoft buying out such a huge company would not only bring up anti-trust issues, but a huge backlash from the media. It would be very unwise of them to do so.

They can, however, throw money at devs for exclusive deals :P
