[QUOTE="russdmoore"]I think it is a good thing. I think they are going to try to keep the xbox as close to the PC tech for ease of development and other reasons. I would say a 5 year cycle would be perfect.kingtito

Best if you bought one at launch. Not that great for people picking it up now or next year. And Microsoft doesn't support users running older products like Sony does. They will give all X360 owners the finger the same day there new system comes out. Just like they do with every other product they sell. And just like they did with the original Xbox.

Cows are soooo retarded with this 7-10 year life span. Try and understand cows, IF THE PS1/PS2 WEREN'T SO SUCCESSFUL THEY WOULD NOT BE SUPPORTING IT TODAY.

If the 360 is even halfway successful you can bet MS WILL support it longer than 5 years.

 This post is so rare to find these days...

why would they not be talking about next gen already? MS got a system out a year earlier and for $200 less then Sony. When you consider the rate of depreciation for these systems, and the $200 price brake... well if MS puts out another next gen system in 2 years for $400 with HD DVD player it will have crysis level graphics, no competition in the console race, and I will have only spent $200 more then owning a PS3, while at the same time, enjoying cutting edge graphics for a longer period of time.

I have a ps3 and 360 and i love them both equally, but i don't like the Ms Boys calling out the sony ones because of a flawed system, i mean isn't it already rumored that ms is talking about their next gen console, if 360 was that great they would make sure there weren't rumors or articles of next gen flying around,http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/peter-moore-sez-next-xbox-in-5-years-244157.php, it's already been out for 2 years, should systems have a shelf life of 7-10 years?Animal-Mother

No , No , No. Obviously MS is planning on the next xbox but probably so is Sony and Nintendo . A website just predicted the specs of the next xbox based on how pcs would evolve till then.

MS is on the record as saying they feel consoles should have shorter life spans. They feel even the standard 5 years is too long.

But you are incorrect. Consoles have typically ALWAYS come out every five years. This gen was unusual with the 360 coming out 4 years after Xbox, Wii came out 5 years and the PS3 came out 6 years + after the PS2. The 7 - 10 year lifespan is based on how long games continue to come out for the previous gen console. Using that measurement, the PS1 had about an 8year lifespan and the PS2 is still going strong at 7+ years.

I would also add that when Sony announced the PS1, they announced at the exact same time their plans to have PS2 in 2000 and the PS3 in 2005. That was about 12 years ago they said that.

link to MS saying that the span of a console should be less than 5 years?

I don't have a link. It is just something I remember from years ago...before the 360 was announced. It had to do with their idea that consoles need to be updated faster to take better advantage of changing technology. That doesn't mean they will actually go through with it, although the Xbox did fall in line with that 4 year cycle.

You can believe me or not, I really don't care.

[QUOTE="deadmeat59"]360 did not do much better then xbox one witch failed . i would not be shocked if ms is once agian trying to redo there system kingtito

Guess that means the PS3 is a failure as well. Get ready for the PS4 to come out then.

The PS3 will NEVER fail as hard as Xbox 1 did. Cmon 120 million vs around 35 million? ... ya right. the 360 will NEVER reach over 50 million units

Most 360's have a HARDWARE life of about 1 year with the RROD, followed by multiple, frustrating Warranty refurbs...

You honestly expect a Xbox 360 to last 7 to 10 years?

Netherscourge

*ahem* Ps2

And its still rumored that the ps2 will last around 5 more years...

Despite owning both a 360 and PS3, and loving them both, what you said there is exactly why I prefer and have more faith in the PS3's future. Not to mention the hardware is ALOT more reliable with the PS3 as well.

Microsoft jumped the gun on this gen because they had failed to compete with Sony effectively in the last gen. They are billions in the hole with the xbox's, and will want to have at least 2 or 3 years of profitability from the 360 before they release a new console. They just scraped into profitiability with the Halo3 release and the RROD offset, so expect another 3 years at least before their next console is released. Sony haven't got started this gen, but lack the momentum that the original xbox had so don't expect a PS4 anytime soon. My guess is the PS3 would only have been released for this christmas if MS hadn't released the 360 so soon.

Nintendo is the wild card, they made profit form day one on their last two consoles, they have momentum, and they could release hardware for christmas of next year that is better than the 360 and PS3 and profit from day one. However, Nintendo want to maximize their profits which they are able to do with the Wii for the forseeable future as the Wii is effectively future proofed as it is way behind the tech for this generation from the start. And finally as a video game only company, Nintendo is in this for the long run and short console lives alienate users in the long run.

man seriously, whenever something new is releases, plans are already in motion for the next installment. Sony and Nintendo are likely already doing R&D for there next consoles also. The earlier they start the better the product.

Bet you weren't saying that last gen. Bet you were talking about how great the PS2 was compared to the XBOX. Hope you realize the PS2 was faulty as hell while the XBOX was solid.

i see some people saying that they don't mind the new the new 360 coming out. if you like getting screwed go with ms. The 360 is not in the position to be replaced so soon. they sold about 2.5 million to 3 this year. now i'm pretty sure ms is thinking about the new 360 now. this is normal but to back ms decision to drop the 360 and make the new system in a short period of time is stupid. yeah spend 400 now and have ms drop support in two years. thats not a selling point.

LOL, yeah I owned them both last gen and never had a problem with either one. I loved the original Xbox as well as the PS2 because they both had plenty of games that I wanted. Although yes, I did indeed prefer the PS2 because of it's games. Just like this gen, I own andl ove both the 360 and the PS3 because they both have games that I want, but I personally prefer the PS3 for it's prospective future outlook and reliablility. Different gens, different reasons. Just personal preference is all, you know?

Regardless, the disk read error of the PS2 has nothing to do with this generation of consoles, so why even bring it up? I love the 360 because of it's games, but the console itself is not a good hardware design, it is just a proven, confirmed fact. Bringing up the disk read error of the PS2 is not going to justify it either, lol. But anyway, I love them both, I just like the PS3 more personally. No harm no foul, aye?

Before you go yapping off at the mouth, Sony was doing the same thing back in 2002. Here's proof

Yeah, but looking back on it I believe it was just a PR move before dumping the Xbox the way they did. MS needed people to jump on the 360 or else their early jump into next-gen would be wasted. They had to kill the Xbox and that was probably just their excuse.

Now that the 360 is doing well and making money, MS has come around to Sony's way of looking at things and have claimed the 360 will probably have a longer than 5 year life. But again, that doesn't meant the next Xbox won't come out in 2010. It just potentially means they will continue to support it with games long after the next console comes out.

Yes they would, the proof?? PSP it will never be as big as Nintendo DS and had a big struggle the first few years, but they backed it and backed it and now it's selling great. Sony has proven they stand behind their products.

If MS is planning on 360 being a 5 yr console..... then consumers are actually getting only 4 years out of it. Why?

If you follow PC gaming. PC gamers usually upgrade their hardware when the game releases. PC gamers do not buy a new PC one year before the game is available. Look at Crysis. I doubt anyone would buy a new PC 1 year before Crysis releases. PC gamer wait and buy a new PC a few weeks within the time of the game release.... So with consoles, we all know almost all the time, the launch games on a console is sub-par. And the console games usually take 1-2 yrs after the console release. So if 360 is going to be 5 yr console, you are really getting a 4 yr console.

Hmmm, that didnt happen to me! Maybe talkin out of your arse isnt such a good idea. Plus, Sonys been getting spanked this gen, so I can see why you Sony sheeple are upset. I thinks its hilarious too!

As for the TC, ALL the companies have started planning their next consoles! Thats been known for a while!
