Is MS really serious this gen or what?i guess since they decided to use Last Gen Tech on a nex gen system. they feel others should pay for their faulty choice. sorry but this doesnt cut it any more MS.if i want last gen console, i trade in my 360 for a Wii (no offence to sheeps, i like the wii and want one badly) http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3161942

they shoud of just made HDD standard, or work off some type of next gen format. oh well off to play some bioshock demo

"The requirement is primarily linked to hard drive limitations. "It's the consequence of having a limited size hard drive, with a lot of other things to fill it out," he says. Companies are allowed to expand the required size, but the game should always run on the original requirement -- users have to approve the change. If the requirement goes up, Microsoft is playing with the idea of allowing the ability to degrade -- those are Microsoft's words -- the experience. Their ideas, straight from their presentation"

low res models/texures

place certain areas off limit

stream assest from server (slow loading)

I lied. After reading the rest of the posts, I needed to say more.

Read the article off of the link, folks!

This is bad news. Not to mention the next paragraph where it talks about even more online fees per game. Nice.

It has something to do with MMO's on the 360 and the amount of HDD space they are allowed to use. What happens is the developer has to estimate the amount of space the game will take up over its lifetime, and then they are limited to using that amount of space, or at least thats my understanding. So for example (again, I'm not 100% sure about this) if Blizzard were to port WoW to the 360 they could set aside 4 gigs of space for the game on the HDD. The game may never use up that 4 gigs but the game can never go over that limit. Also a game could set aside 30 gigs as far as MS is concerned, but obviously the developer would kill their userbase.

The idea of downgrading the game is to help save HDD space for a "second tier" of gamers in the event of a large game. So for example if a 360 version of WoW were to require 15 gigs of space, Blizzard could run a "second tier" version that has lower res textures and limits the player to certain areas in order to only use, say, 2 gigs of HDD space.

Now again I am not 100% sure about this, but that seemed to be what the article was trying to get across. Also the TC failed to mention how this "rule bending" opens the door for all games to use the HDD.

Line one in the link: "In an unsurprising move (and already a precedent set by Final Fantasy XI, but ignored since), Microsoft confirmed at its Gamefest 2007 that studios working on server-based titles for Xbox 360 are allowed to require the hard drive for their games to run." In other words, this isn't really news, they are just turning practice into policy.

MMOs were already authorized to charge extra for thier games. FFXI has been doing it for years. Again, this is very old news.

Look at games like Call of Duty 2, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Halo 3, Mass Effect, etc, etc, etc. As long as the system has good games, downgraded or now, who cares?

That's funny that devs chose a "last gen" console as the only console to release Bioshock, Gears of War, Halo 3, an a version of Madden that runs smoother on.

SO BASICALY what your saying, is that downgraded textured, poly model, 360 games STILL have higher res texturesand higher poly models than PS3 games. wow. and you say the 360 uses old tech?

(i highly doubt this quote is NOT taken out of context)

So massive 360 MMO games can require the hard drive, there's an option to run the MMOs at lower settings so they don't use as much room on your 360's hard drive, and MMO games can have a subscription fee.

Whoop-dee-doo.

To be fair, that only concerns MMO's. They're trying to limit how much hard drive space will be taken up by installed MMO files on the hard drive.

Really, I can't see why anyone would want to pay to play an MMO on the 360. It already costs enough to get Xbox Live, and then to have a MMO fee slapped on top aswell is a bit ridiculous.

That is one good thread. Doesn't beat the "PC doesn't do HD" thread though.
