With the revelations of the ps4 pro and the Xbox one Scorpio, who agrees that the time to go 4k is now? And who here will be upgrading to get the best out of there new consoles?

A single gtx 1080 can't even do 4k what makes people think the pissy little Scorpio at 6tf can?!? At least the ps4 pro has beautiful exclusives like Uncharted 4... Who needs 4k when Uncharted 4 looks so fucking good?
Isn't 4K a bigger deal on screens bigger than 50"?
It doesn't matter as much unless you are running a big screen and sit extremely close to it.
"Research shows that the average viewer sits nine feet away from the television, but in order to fully experience 4K resolution on a massive 84-inch display, you’ll need to sit 5.5 feet or closer to your TV."

So I play consoles on a monitor. And a 4k monitor seems kinda silly right now because my PC and surely any console won't be able to really make use of that. The 4k they are talking about is upscaled or something? Or pretty damn low fps in the 20's region. If fps are going to drop to 20's I wouldn't even consider upgrading to 4k just for that. I would only consider the 4k for movies in that case.
Like I'm looking at a 3440x1440 display at 100hz which would just function as a 1440p 60hz 16:9 screen for console games and that is already maxing the data going through a displayport, and pushing the power it requires vs. the redundancy at like 2-3 feet distance. Plus with a 21:9 ratio the movie/desktop experience will be pretty cool. Interesting that TV's and consoles aren't first moving to 2k resolutions, but are immediately heading for 4k. I'm kinda hoping that the upcoming consoles will support 2k resolution with some higher fps. If that won't work I might just give up on consoles in general. Not going to get a separate screen just for consoles. TV's have pretty shitty input lag in general. That's part of the reason they are so cheap compared to gaming monitors. I don't want to game on something with 20+ms input lag or high response times. And 4k TV's tend to be very big because you want to see the difference, but that also makes them slow.
TLDR: I'd use a monitor. But I don't game in the living room. If 4k comes with super slow fps, I wouldn't go out of my way to buy a 4k anything for the gaming-part of it. Maybe for the movie-part.

the input lag isn't all that bad in some screen, my Samsung UE55JS8500 sports 22ms in game mode, sure my tn 144hz monitor has "1ms" but it's still totally acceptable by my standards
My 55" 1080p does just fine. If you want a good 4k tv, I'd wait 2 more years. Prices will be good then.
@brah4ever:
Finer details stand out a lot more, colours are very vibrant and everything looks a bit more life like. Wildlife and outdoor content benefits the most.
The problem we have at the moment is with movies. A lot of movies are shot in 4K, but then they do the editing at 2k and scale it back up.

I find things with defined edges lines look the best. The Martian looks incredible on UHD blu ray. Anything with a lot of building will look insane in 4k.

Do some research, the 6TF is like a gtx1070, gtx 1070 can do 4k in alot of games. And think about games that will be optimised ofr it so it will be even better.

I have a 1070, it can do 4k, but sub 30 frames. I dont think optimization will fix it that much
From PC gamer "but you'll still need two cards in SLI if you want to consistently break 60 fps."
Guess we'll see. Me I just got a new 60" Samsung 1080p last year and it looks great. I'm in no hurry for 4k till content becomes the norm and prices on sets drop even further.
it could be similar to 2005-6 and HDTVs. Most consumers did not have an HDTV at the time, but for a long term investment like a console it was a good idea for the ps3 and xbox 360 to be HD capable
No. If you're in the market for a new TV then by all means, pick up a 4k TV. They are reasonably priced now and have great picture quality. However if your TV/Monitor is not in need of an upgrade, there is no point.
It costs roughly $2000 to play games at 4k60 without compromising on a PC. That's better than this time last year where it was simply not possible to reliably play 4k60. The technology is getting there, but it's still very expensive. It's a few years away on the consoles. I kind of doubt the next real generation will be able to do 4k30 reliably, but there could be some serious advancement in GPUs soon that could make it possible.
Sony and Microsoft are pushing this faux 4k just as a marketing tactic. The PS4/Xbox One are so damn similar both companies are doing their best to differentiate themselves. This push on 4k is just another one of those tactics. It's not real 4k. It's all upscaled garbage. Don't buy into it.

Oh yes I guess for most people it's barely noticeable. I'm a bit of a weirdo when it comes to that stuff. Your monitor probably has 1ms refresh rate and a slightly higher input lag, or it's a super special monitor. 10ms input lag is normal even for the top end model monitors. And I read that the PS4 and XB1 upscale internally so that the input lag becomes less, because the TV won't have to do that. So maybe it's a non issue.

hence the " " as it's not really 1ms
For gaming, no. Only the highest end PCs can achieve native 4k with 60fps and the cost for quality HDR is still quite high. Allow the race-to-the-bottom to mature for another year to two and see if a chord is struck by first adopters with PS4 Pro, Scorpio, and the like and if the market inertia will carry us into the 4k era.
@benny_boy98
The Xbone Scorpio doesn't release for another year (Holiday 2017), so Xbox fans still has a year+ to wait and see the 4K prices continue to drop.
The PS4 Pro releases in two months, giving two months for PS fans to upgrade.
That said, the software is what will motivate people to buy new 4K screens, and that could take even more time.
It's a nice, noticeable jump, but at the end of the day 1080p -> 4k is a fart in the wind compared to 480i -> 720p. And i'm not just talking about video games, but film as well.
I'll wait a while until 7680x4320 (8K) is the standard for both film and video games, and i'll get a decent set for that.

A single 390X can handle 4K on Ultra/Very High settings at 30 FPS, what in the hell are you on about...
I have a two year old 50-inch TV that cost me less than a PS3 on Black Friday. I'm not about to blow insane cash on 4K when I'm half-blind and wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway.
I don't think it's quite time for 4K to be standard, either. Maybe by 2018.

1080p isn't even standard on over-the-air tv in 2016. Hell, ABC and FOX still broadcast major sporting events in 720p.
a TV is one of those things that a buy when the one i have breaks. my current TV is a 47" 1080P LG crimson series TV that, i think, is approaching 10 years old. still a great telly. plenty of ports, nice picture, decent sound. sadly it does randomly drop the signal once per day for some odd reason (its the telly...same thing happends with my PC, wiiu and PS3 all using different cables on different ports) so i think its coming to an end. it owes me nothing though.
only when it completely kicks the bucket will i get a 4K telly.
so yeah...now is the time. if your current telly is either really crap or dieing/dead.
also a TV is one of those things you shouldnt skimp on if at all possible. there are really cheap 4K tellies out there but dont. if at all possible avoid and do some homework on it. it will be used a lot and a good one will last a long long time. no point in getting a 4K telly with a HDR stamp if the telly cant tell the different between blue and grey. its not about features either...its about image quality (and sound quality if you have no interest in hooking up a seperate sound system). thats the most important thing.
@dynamitecop: Nya, If you want to keep getting your ass whopped keep going the way you're going. Until then, what happened here?!?
Only 8.9 Teraflops? Didn't you just say today that you have a $5,600 PC?
When did I say I've got a $5600 PC? Now that I think about it the overall setup probably costs around that much. Here in AU everything is 1.5x more expensive.
You can ask him when he comes online about his paltry library of PC games he doesn't really play.
What the **** are you on about? Also not every pc gamer uses steam as the main library. If you were a Real PC gamer you'd know there are plenty of others like Battlenet, GOG, Uplay, Origin. I don't see too many hours on Witcher 3, definitely not enough for you to have finished the game of the decade...PC gamer huh?
Right here, CPU-Z and GPU-Z validation is now a requirement.
The fact of the matter is for most, and by most I mean essentially everyone who uses a PC for video games, they will use Steam as their primary location of purchase and play, it's got the largest library and the best features in the industry. I don't doubt you use other services, but the point was more to highlight just how limited the play is of the game you do have, and another weird thing is I don't see any centralized PC game you spend a vast amount of time in which is one of the largest staples of PC gamers, a particular game they invest hundreds to thousands of hours in.
For someone gloating about such an expensive PC it doesn't appear it actually gets much usage for playing games, it seems to serve a larger purpose for you flapping your gums and calling yourself a PC gamer. Hey, you use these other services? Feel free to post your extended digital libraries, I wait in anticipation.
Ok, lets get down to business. Normally I wouldn't entertain these idiots like Nya but this guy seems to enjoy stalking me in every thread. I'm a PC gamer and by that I mean I love games but prefer to play predominantly on PC - therefore that makes me a PC gamer. My guess is he's just salty my rig outbenchs his despite not having enough "credentials, experience and history in the medium"
Nya, for your sake, next time you want to spill your elitist BS and your "Real" PC gamer crap, for your own good - please keep it where it belongs by jamming it back up your ass! It's knobs like you who give PC gamers the perception of pretentious dickheads and a bad name...
Now, my turn... I see here you have not finished the game of the decade - The Witcher 3, haven't finished Half Life 2, F.E.A.R., I can keep going but you get my point... Sucks when you get exposed for the fraud you are hey?

Game console developers can target 4K resolution based on console hardware's TFLOPS and effective memory bandwidth.
The majority of PC's max details settings yields very little gain on visual quality with massive compute/memory bandwidth resource consumption i.e. massive con to sell more GPUs.

It's called having a job and being at work for 12 hours not able to make a proper response from a phone.
I'm not seeing a $5,600 computer setup here, more around $2,300 or so, so there goes that, in terms of your games, you only have 164 PC games in total, not to mention on Steam the most hours played in any game is 52 in Just Cause 2, not exactly inspiring confidence.
I haven't finished The Witcher 3, it's a very long game and I have about 1,500 games in my overall library, juggling time between them is not an easy task. Oh I haven't beat Half-Life 2 or F.E.A.R.? You mean the game I bought the day it came out in 2004? OR no? F.E.A.R.? You mean the other game I've been playing since the closed GameSpy beta?
Since you don't seem to know much about Steam, and it makes sense as you've only been on the platform since 2011, you know, only 5 years... Steam didn't start tracking playtime hours until June of 2009, 5 years after the release of Half-Life 2, and 6 years after the launch of Steam, which I've also been on since beta and before that on the World Opponent Network which is the network that pre-dates Steam...
You're drowning in shit creek right now, you never even learned how to swim, you're some newage and newfangled gamer who hopped on the PC bandwagon and act like you're somehow one of us, you're not and it's easy to make you look bad because you have no credibility, history, experience or longevity with this medium.

Nya, Like I said before. The next time you feel the need to feed your insecurity about whatever the **** you're insecure about, instead of spilling your elitist BS to everyone (which quite frankly I'm sure none of them give two shits about what you have to say) I would highly suggest you do the following. Jam it up your ass.

Why are you having fun with me making you look extremely stupid?
Having a whale of a time with my new 40" 4K monitor along with a single GTX 1070... BF1 Beta on high settings at 60FPS at 4K on a 40" MVA screen visually is breathtaking.
I don't think there's any rush... and that's coming from someone who has a 4k TV. But my next purchase however will probably be an OLED TV... that's the only TV I've seen that makes me want to upgrade from my current model (even though my current TV doesn't have HDR).
