Poll Is Planescape Torment still the greatest written story ever told? (42 votes)

Yes 43%
No (state the game please) 57%

In my many, many many, many (really big) experience of gaming forums, whenever anyone says "whats the greatest writing in a video game" almost like a reaction from a mild shock the words "Planescape Torment" are uttered. The love of this game can very easily be seen from the record breaking kickstarter.

But this game is very old and many games and console generation have came and gone.

Is this really still the greatest story ever told or has any game managed to surpass it?

Weird, I thought I had posted here...

Anyway, the answer is no: the story is great especially because of how personal it is, but it's told in a very rough manner and there are aspects of it that are needlessly convoluted and others that are there but are not explored.

No.

Not in any way, shape or form.

Under no circumstances.

By no means

This seems like a belligerent yes.

Does a video game have the "greatest story ever told"?

Absolutely not

Still getting a yes vibe.

Snore. Trolling is still 0/10

It sure has some of the best writing seen in a videogame.

But most of the conclusive "Best stowi eva!1!" comes mostly from those that havent even played it. If it was another--more mature and honest medium, Planescape: Torment's script would likely have its community divided with how its latter half unfolded.

So was Seven Samurai. Still better than action adventure movies today.

Masterpieces usually are timeless. Which is why we will forget about Last Of Us in about 12 months time.

Due to inevitable blind voting from younger or uncultured gamers who have never played it, 20% of the no vote will be removed.

"uncultured"

Bitch you just said "the greatest written story", in the English Language that means of all written stories, as in ever. **** no, only the twatest of gaming loving twats would seriously try to pimp out a Video Game story (largely good one) as some greatest written story with a straight face.

do you honestly think a scrub like him has read any book or other kind of media?

I can't say, I still can't get interested in playing it.

I urge you with all my heart to give it a try again, at least until you reach the Pillar of Skulls. I can't spoil to much, but that moment is still sending shivers down my spine. I gotta caps lock for anyone that wants to try out the game, DO NOT play without Bigg's Widescreen Mod, Ghostdog's UI mod and Ultimate Fixpack.

Playing in 720p (my personal sweet spot) with a proper UI and with most of the bugs fixed is how this game must be played these days. I couldn't enjoy it otherwise, and i bet most people couldn't as well. But with these 3 essential enhancements? Not only do they make PS:T accessible, but it also made this game to be my favorite RPG of all times. It's the perfect example of how to make a truly outstanding choice - consequence implementation, which is by far complemented by its fantastic writing. Every single piece of text is interesting to read, every single quest is creative, fun and interesting to do, and by God, your companions couldn't feel more intimate, alive and fresh. The soundtrack is fantastic, the atmosphere is engrossing, both of which make the world feel alive, and the hand painted visuals are the best i've ever seen of the Infinity Engine games.

There is no 1080p mod?

It's mostly the isometric view angle that ruins my interest in the game. I've never been fond of it.

You can play in any resolution, including 1080p, but i wouldn't recommend it. Makes everything way to small. 1280x720 is more than enough to make the game look infinitely more appealing without shrinking the NPCs to the size of ants.

The hand painted visuals shine real nice as well, man. and strange as it may sound, because we're talking about a 15 year old game, the graphics are my second favorite aspect of the game. It just looks so good, so clean, crisp and detailed at a high resolution.

I prefer to read the book that came with the gog version of the game. I jus couldn't get into the game but that story seemed interesting. I hope someone remakes it.

That's a shame. You see, the thing with PS:T is that it just can't be fully replicated in a book. A book offers one route and one ending. PS:T offers multiple routes and endings to almost any situation/quest you encounter, besides the many, many choices you can make to role play The Nameless One how you see fit.

That's why people love it. Because you're role playing through an amazing story. You're there. You're not a reader, a spectator. You're the Nameless One, on a quest to know what can change the nature of a man.

Try playing it with the three mods i mentioned, if you haven't already. I couldn't get into the game either because of its shitty resolution and horrible user interface. Those two are fixed.

Yeah I did install the res mod and the bug fix+ quest completing mod.(like there were many unfinished quests in the game that the modders completed). That was not my main problrm. it was when i got into the combat and it just sucked. And most of the time I had no idea what to do. Maybe I should try it again with a walkthrough.

I understand, that's a problem a lot of players experienced, including myself. My advice would be to play it like an adventure game. Turn down the difficulty to the easiest option, it doesn't affect anything other than the combat. Pour all your points into charisma and intelligence, and avoid combat as much as possible. I know it's not cool to avoid a mechanic of the game, but the main bulk of PS:T gameplay comes from its role playing. Combat is barely 10% of the entire game, so avoiding it is not such an issue. 9 times out of 10, you can.

Wen a combat situation becomes seemingly unavoidable, that's where Morte comes in. He is a ridiculously powerful tank later on with high HP and attack. He can mow down enemies like a knife through butter. And by the time you'd need to fight, you'll mow down enemies as well because of all the tattoos you'd have at your disposal.
