first of all PS3 is also a blue ray player, and we all know blue ray will takeover DVDs, that saves me atleast 200 dollars. Another thing is that Playstation Network is free, unlike Xbox live which will cost me 150 to 288 dollar in three years

I think PS3 is well worth the price

Yes, it is pricey. Hoeever, it is fully worth it imo for the value it offers, especially now more than ever with a great library of games too. If you're a film fanatic and game buff like me it's the perfect all in one system.

So somehow because you think it is well worth the price that makes it non-expensive?

When you consider that the PS3 now costs as much as the 360 did when it launched and that a 360 can now be purchased for 200$, there can be no doubt that the PS3 is an expensive machine.

I have a large amount of games for my PS3 and I get good use out of it, so it was well worth my money. That doesn't mean I'm going to be intellectually dishonest and pretend that it's not expensive.

it is expensive considering the competition and it's sales record but honestly, $400 is exactly that much money for a one time thing. we all spend more money on games/acessories anyway, so i don't see the big deal.

the only problem would be if a console sells for some crazy price that's way more than the other's, like $600...oh wait

sony wishes their was a reset button on this gen methinks

Expensive? Yes.

Worth the price? Definitely! It gives you the most bang for buck (something that people that are very ill-informed don't understand). You can't even really argue you this.

How much does the 360 Elite cost? Same as PS3 but less comes with it. I still don't buy the whole 360 being so much more affordable thing. I'd bet most 360 owners in this forum own the models above The Arcade 360.

"Most bang for your buck" includes subjective criteria so it definitely can be argued. I have no idea where all your bravado on this particular point is coming from.

Yes. I think it's really only affordable if it's your only console, or if you're rich.

You pretty much robbed yourself of credibility by using the phrases "best games, best system" in this conversation. That is only your opinion and thus it is not relevant.

doesn't the elite come with two of the most critically acclaimed games of this gen: Halo 3 & Fable 2? so i'd have to say it comes with more, considering the HDD is bigger then the $400 ps3 counter part and it comes with 2 games that still go for full retail :|

the bundle might not have launched yet though, need varification

"Most bang for your buck" includes subjective criteria so it definitely can be argued. I have no idea where all your bravado on this particular point is coming from.

Yay, I was hoping someone would quote me. When I say bang for buck, I mean that the PS3 excels as an entertainment hub. Is it completely superior to everything else? No, but it has a lot to offer in addition to playing hi-def games (which it why it has that bang for buck).

  • The most obvious reason it gives bang for buck, is that it's a relatively cheap blu-ray player (there are cheaper ones now). Not only that, it's one of the best blu-ray players on the market (Sony automatically updates it for future compatibility).
  • Another reason is that the PS3 is very good at streaming media from a PC, so essentially it's also a great media extender for your entire home. I have an Xbox 360 and it can do the samething, but unfortunately it's very stupid sometimes when it comes to streaming movies (using TVersity OR windows media player) from me laptop. Sometimes the folder will show up, but not necessarily the movies or I'll have to reset the Xbox 360 because it would freeze when loading a h264 file to stream. In addition, the Xbox 360 doesn't support the 5.1 audio format with h264 (I don't know WHY they don't update this through a new firmware). There are more issues I've had trying to stream media, but I won't get into them now. Really all it is is that the Xbox 360 doesn't do it CONSISTENTLY. When it comes to PS3, using TVersity, it can stream h264 files in 5.1 surround sound and all the other good formats like xvid, etc. The PS3 does this consistently.
  • Another thing that makes it a bang for buck is the built in wireless, which is just great to have as more homes now a days have routers and home networks.
  • Also, PSN is free with no subscription fee and some of the online games have dedicated servers to give a more lag free experience.
  • In addition, you can use a web browser on it (even though it's not really that great).
  • Lastly, the wireless controller can be charged from the PS3, so it requires no battery.

I might be missing like one thing, but these are the reasons why the PS3 offers a consumer great bang for buck.

Halo 3 has an aggregate score of 93.3 on Gamerankings, making it easily one of most critically acclaimed games of the generation. The Fable claim is a stretch, but to say Halo 3 was one of the most critically acclaimed is absolutely accurate. You're opinion that it's okay doesn't change that.

And also, so what if he thinks they are two of the best games this gen? Do you reallythink it's appropriate to call somebody's opinion a "stupid statement"?

I don't disagree with alot of what you're saying. I just took issue with you saying that it can't be argued. What makes it arguable is that people have different standards on what constitutes bang for the buck.

Still...when people talk about the 360 being so much more affordable they are talking about being able to get the Arcade model which is pretty bare bones. Owners of that model would have to buy a bunch of things in addition to it in order for it to offer the same full gaming experience as a PS3 or higher 360 models. Not to mention having to pay if they ever intend on playing online. Add up the costs.

hey, i agree, im just saying that the 360 elite is a better value than the 80gig ps3. i don't see why people complain about the console costs other than the fact that they can't afford all of them. neither system is crazy expensive like the $600 ps3 anymore and it's just a one time buy thing. games add up to WAAAAAAAY more.

but hell, what do i know about money, im a kid :P

According to Metacritic... Heres the top 5 games on the big three.

360:

GTA4--98

Bioshock--96

Orange box--96

Gears of War--94 (system exclusive)

Oblivion--94

PS3:

GTA4--98

LBP--95 (system exclusive)

COD4--94

Bioshock--94

MGS4--94 (system exclusive)

Wii:

Super Mario Galaxy--97 (system exclusive)

Twilight Princess--95 (system exclusive)

World of Goo--94 (system exclusive)

SSBB--93 (system exclusive)

RB2--92

Halo3 is listed as the 7th highest rated game for 360, and Fable2 is the 25th highest scoring game on 360... making NEITHER of those games one of the 'most acclaimed games of this gen'. Not even one of 'the most acclaimed games of this gen' on the 360. (Although, at least, Halo 3 is in the top 10 on the 360.)

Depends on how much disposable income you have.

In comparison with other consoles, yes the PS3 is expensive.

I agreed that the Fable claim was a stretch, but you're seriously splitting hairs here. There's hundreds of games this gen. If Halo 3 is in the top 10 of anything, it qualifies as one of the most critically acclaimed.

Tragic_Kingdom7

According to Metacritic... Heres the top 5 games on the big three.

360:

GTA4--98

Bioshock--96

Orange box--96

Gears of War--94 (system exclusive)

Oblivion--94

PS3:

GTA4--98

LBP--95 (system exclusive)

COD4--94

Bioshock--94

MGS4--94 (system exclusive)

Wii:

Super Mario Galaxy--97 (system exclusive)

Twilight Princess--95 (system exclusive)

World of Goo--94 (system exclusive)

SSBB--93 (system exclusive)

RB2--92

Halo3 is listed as the 7th highest rated game for 360, and Fable2 is the 25th highest scoring game on 360... making NEITHER of those games one of the 'most acclaimed games of this gen'. Not even one of 'the most acclaimed games of this gen' on the 360. (Although, at least, Halo 3 is in the top 10 on the 360.)

I agreed that the Fable claim was a stretch, but you're seriously splitting hairs here. There's hundreds of games this gen. If Halo 3 is in the top 10 of anything, it qualifies as one of the most critically acclaimed.

In the top 10, sure, but only on one system. Looking at the hundreds of games, as you put it, of this gen, all together, it isn't really in the top 10. Was it critically acclaimed? Yes. Great seller? Yes. But implying that Halo and fable were 'two of the most acclaimed gamed of this gen' implies top of the top, to me at least. I could just as easily say Killzome 2 and Flower are two of the most acclaimed games. After all, one of them is in the top 10 on ps3, and the other is in the top 30...

I might be missing like one thing, but these are the reasons why the PS3 offers a consumer great bang for buck.

mD-

IMO the Xbox 360 elite is more bang for your buck considering that:

Blu-ray doesn't matter, I don't own a an HDtv

All console Internet systems suck

I like media options on portable systems

Only lan connections work with my modem

More of my friends own a 360 so XBL is worth it

I like the X box controller (Ps3's feels funny, I liked Dualshock 2 better)

If the Ps3 were cheaper I would probably prefer it over the Xbox but seening that it's not, I'm not really into it.

Well, let's just throw Fable out of this argument, since we both agree that that one doesn't really fly.

Your "top of the top"logic would count games like MGS4 out of the "one of the most critically acclaimed" category, which would be silly. If there's several hundreds of games this genand Halo 3 achieves top 10 status on one of the 4 systems (3 of which share aconsiderable bulk of their games), I think it's safe to say that Halo 3falls into the category of the most critically acclaimed.I think you're unreasonably moving the goal posts to suit your argument.

At $400 it's still up there.

Still, I definately find it worth the price. It's use as a Blu-Ray player, media streaming and gaming really helps with the cost.

Blu-Ray is pretty much the only thing that drives the price so high. You don't use Blu-Ray?

If you look at the purchase price, it is, but on the inside it is a hella lot cheaper than the 360. The 360 on the other hand is the opposite of that, its cheap on the outside, but expensive on the inside.

first of all PS3 is also a blue ray player, and we all know blue ray will takeover DVDs, that saves me atleast 200 dollars. Another thing is that Playstation Network is free, unlike Xbox live which will cost me 150 to 288 dollar in three years

I think PS3 is well worth the price

Khanbhai0
I am sorry, did you say that the built in Blu-ray player saved you $200? You are aware that the Blu-ray player is why it is $200 more expensive, right? How exactly does it save you money? You payed extra for it.

I'm not really sure what you're saying, but rest assured Sony is making a lot less profit per sale than MS...

Alot of people don't have HDtvs making Bul-Ray pointless (like me).

Very true, though HDTV seems to be gaining quite a bit of traction.

Still, it is mostly the Blu-Ray drive that increases the cost of PS3.
