It feels like Dead Space was an western take on a Japanese horror game in that, certain concepts like cumbersome controls, bad camera, bad inventory are placed in Japanese horror games to add tension. I think Dead Space proved that you do not need all that to make a tense and horrifying game. To come from a horror game where you can move and shoot at the same time, and a lack of a UI for immerson sakes, and also very different monsters from the classical "zombie-like" structure, to a game where you cannot move and shoot at the same time and a very traditional monster design.

That being said, is RE5 in trouble because of Dead Space?

No way. Dead Space will no effect on RE5, even if it was the exact same game simply because of the RE name.

Really I think the only possible way anything bad happens to RE5 is if it's way too different from RE4 and a media backlash of sorts occurs.

Nah. RE5 is going to be awesome. I don't think I'll like it quite as much as Dead Space, but it'll still be one of the must-have games of '09.

No.

Dead Space is mediocre at best and nothing about that game is scary. It's a clone of RE4.

Agreed, although I am fully expecting to enjoy Dead Space more, personally. In fact, I just ordered me a copy off Ebay last night, and I plan on hitting it after Fallout 3. The back logging of this massive release season has begun, lol.

I'm just thinking because of Dead Space people are going to go to RE5 and go like "Why can't I shoot and move at the same time?", "Why cant they give me directions that doesn't require me to break into the menu all the time", or like RE4 "Why do all these enemies function the same basic way?" or "Why do I have to play tetris to make my items fit?"

All these things that Dead Space has corrected, would that make reviewers think that RE5's gameplay seems dated?

Definitely not.

Not only are the two games completely different from each other but the RESI name will be enough to keep the games sales high.

2 different games, based on the enemies you fight. If it wasn't for you being able to move in DS you'd be DEAD. and as for the menu, sometimes YOU HAD TO GO TO IT to recharge an ability, etc.

If you could run and shoot in RE5, it would just be TOO easy. like i said, its to keep tention, and really tho, in real life you would stand still and shoot, for better acuracy...right?

Indeed, I cannot remember the source, but it should be easy to find. I remember actually being relieved at hearing the news that they were doing so. As that was one gripe I had with RE4, even though I loved the hell out of it. So, it made sense to me that they would upgrade and make improvements to the RE4 formula, instead of just implementing the exact same mechanics, and only update the graphics.

RE5 should have moving and shooting at the same time instead of the archaic way RE4 did it. The people at Capcom say it's to keep the intensity and horror intact, but honestly, the game really doesn't have either, just a dated control scheme.

I don't think Capcom will be losing sleep over Dead Space. I'm not discrediting the game, but the RE series has generated massive popularity so unless if they somehow completely fudge something up, then there's no reason to worry.

You haven't played System Shock, have you?

Well considering Dead Space was supposto be System Sock 3....

Yes I have played System Shock, specifically 2, which Dead Space's level design and infestation is basically the same thing.

More specifically I thought Dead Space was a western take on the current Resident Evil's.

I thought that Capcom announced a couple of months ago they were in fact changing the combat, so that you could move Chris while shooting?

Nope, Chris WON'T move and shoot at the same time, reasons being, they want to keep tention.

Here is what I remember reading, and this is just one of many sources that reported it. (I know, Destructoid, but this is a legit report) So, feel free to search for yourself. The controls have been overhauled to have more of a Gears of War type feeling, and whether this includes running and shooting or not remains to be seen. I just remembered that the controls have indeed been changed. Here you go:
