What's keeping Sony from bringing some PS3 classics over to PS5 and PC like Resistance or Killzone?

Everytime I speak to PS5 owners they mention the lack of games. Bringing over some old games would surely help.

Sure beats cancelling 50 live service games.

Meanwhile Xbox keeps bringing back old games and franchises like Age of Empires, Ninja Gaiden or the recently remastered Age of Mythology.

Must be because Sony is dense.

@Archangel3371: Sony started out great this gen. With so many PS4 games receiving proper love and support. All this seemingly slowed to a crawl, and the best thing PS5 users have to look forward to now is Xbox studios games.

Not stupid, just hubristic.

We've seen this before. Sony dominates the PS2 era, which got to their heads, so they make an expensive console that's difficult to develop for. They get burned, corrects course for PS4, dominates again, and the cycle repeats itself.

I expect to just see a lot more remasters for the rest of the gen. There's just so little time to turn this ship around and start cranking the single player games again.

It's a lot more work. Especially for PS3 games.

MS made the smart call to keep a level of abstraction between the game and hardware back during the 360 era (I remember Tim Sweeney complaining about it on the 360 as he recked he could have squeezed some more perf out of it). MSs hardware selection has also been less...er...excentric. So getting those games to run on different hardware has been less of a problem for them (though by no means trivial).

Emulating the PS3 is an absolute pain in the ass. There have been advances in the scene but it's still not at a level where Sony could use it to sell PS3 games on the PS5. They could get it to that point but it's a lot of dev work and a lot of testing.

More than likely, just porting those games over to the PS5 as native games would be easier. Still not easy or quick though. A lot of specialised code and specialised knowledge behind those old games.

It's a good point though: Sony really should do something. Maybe they will have the teams that were working on the cancelled service games move to making a port while also working on their next main project.

They could be cashing in on these games running native on PC, but instead they forgo the extra money and people play them on emulators just like Nintendo games.

All I really want from the PS3 is just the Infamous games! And I mean all of them. Those games were really fun, not being on PC is just a huge missed opportunity to revive that franchise.

My best guess is due to the "Cell" limitation. Sure, we have the "Emulation" to do so but honestly, I often don't like using them.

Somy need to get back to doing they do best single player action adventure games. This live service rubbish is getting a joke. I buy a Sony console for single player exclusives I can't play on other systems.

Yeah I was thinking about hooking up my PS3 again and playing Infamous.

Ghost of Tsushima is a special one, because I was holding my breath to see if the port would be any good. As this (Sucker punch proprietary) engine was never seen on anything besides playstation.

And then the game launched on PC and it ran extremely well, there was mod support, it ran with all the bells and whistles out of the box.

So they should've cashed in on this and ported Second Son and Last Light as well.

@osan0: Bluepoint used to be their porting/remaster studio. But they are working on something new now.

They could task some of their other studios to work on polishing up old games. For Bend I would love to see a new Syphon Filter. Fill that void left by Splinter Cell and other stealth games just disappearing.

I dunno but a lot of those games have been remade already. I agree some games should be brought over that are only on PS3 like Puppeteer and 3D Dot Game Heroes.

Well with new leadership it could be possible in the future. How long we'd have to wait remains to be seen.

Takes more than a day to clean up after what Jim Ryan did during his reign. The man wasted a ton of talent, studios, and money on shit games no one wanted.

@girlusocrazy: Puppeteer is a great game that flew under a ton of people's radar. All because it launched at the tail end of PS3.

@R4gn4r0k: There were a lot of rumors Sony was working on PS3 emulation, but nothing so far, and they don't even have a lot of PS2 titles emulated. It's a shame. If they did, I wonder how they would go about getting the rights to sell them digitally on PS5. MS did a lot of that work over years, Sony would have to start now when a lot of properties changed hands. But even MS wasn't able to get all their games on or let you play all you disc games even with originals.

But for new players there are better versions of most games. For the games I have, I use the original systems. Some old PS and Xbox games may never be available again.

They are cocky.. just like with the PS3 they think everything they do is perfect and screw those who ask questions. They don't care what their users want, they are just trying to extract as much money as possible... sure, that's just about any business, but it doesn't usually work unless you keep a steady stream of content people actually want.

It's not about making money necessarily, it's about growing and protecting the IP so if they go out of business next week, they can sell it off for the most money.

They can spend a few million and make 10x the investment back on some old ports, sure. Bring it to PC and maybe even other platforms. But why do that when you can spend $200 million and make $1.5 billion over five years? Even if they don't make it, they can project that this is what the worth is, because money is essentially fake at this point.

They're not interested in anything but whales at this point. They don't want to make product, they want to increase stock prices.

This is the state of capitalism at the moment, and it's going to come crashing down hard.

I think their abysmal output in large part is attributed to wanting to port their games to PC laye, which also gets done alongside current gen remakes and remasters, that will really bog down studios on making new games. Their live service ambitions certainly slowed down their studios quite a bit too, and for each one of those canceled, pushes their next releases back further and further.

Still, it hasn't change the market split one bit. Perhaps this market complacency will make them realize it isn't worth putting all that money in first party games, instead they can make their money on third party royalties.

Yup, we're already seeing it crash hard with disastrous EA and Ubisoft numbers. The live service bubble is bursting because really, how many full time jobs can one person hold?

I still like how Nintendo is just doing its own thing. Still making singleplayer games. Still making Mario Kart about a couch multiplayer driving game and if you want to play online use some crummy peer to peer connection. Instead of turning it into some live service donkey fart.

I would argue that in the recent times they have been their less stupid version in a while, curiously enough it was exactly after the departure of Jim Ryan; yes, on paper it seems bad that they cancelled several games, but at the end of the day it is the wisest decision.

The quest for infinite growth is their undoing. Apparently selling 20+ million copies of single player games and making 200 to 250 million in profit wasn't enough. They wanted to hit that live service jack pot in hopes they would get several games making a hundred million a month for the next decade. We saw how that turned out. Hopefully they will get back to what made them successful.

Sony's issue is that they moved away from what made them good. They had a great mix of Japanese games, Western single player games, and exclusives. They moved away from all of that to chase after the live service red ocean.

It all started when companies (Blizzard-Acti) stopped reporting game sales and started reporting soley the money made through services. It made all the other companies look in jealousy.

Sony is definately mismanaging their studios. And because the PS5 sells well, they can get away with it easily too.

Sony must be fast asleep or just complacent.

I gave up on Sony after the PS5 reveal. It has been downhill from there, and PS4 was much more fun, even with its lousy CPU.

@pmanden: yeah man, PS4 is one of my all time favourite consoles: Days Gone, two God of War games, two Horizon games, Uncharted and TLOU 2

I feel everyone was at the top of their game. Now Sony has their prodigy studios working on live service garbage. Or they spend 300 million to buy a studio they are gonne close the day after... I just don't get it. Use that 300 million to hire a studio to port Killzone to PS5 and PC and rake in cash that way. Make it have cross platform multiplayer and heck Resistance 2 had that fun coop mode.

They can definitely be seen as stupid, yes. More so than ever after Concord.

I'd say Sony is more boring, but they're deinitely stupid too. They've had it really easy since the PS2. All they've had to do is a more powerful system and call it the next number. Still managed to **** that up with PS3 though, because again, they're quite stupid. But that's what they've always been. Now they just have more money to be stupid with.

Yeah they're stupid. All they do is chase modern trends and ignore their legacy titles. Forever waiting for more TLOU Factions, Uncharted, Littlebigplanet, Motorstorm, Killzone, Resistance, SOCOM, MAG, Wipeout, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter.

Would you say having more money makes you stupid? Because the CEO's at the top of gaming companies sure seem that way. And back in the 90s when game developers were poor they made a lot more smart decisions, and a lot more long lasting franchises.

You know, this bugs me to my core. Bungie came in and made sure factions was cancelled, now we've had nothing from ND for so long: just endless TLOU 1/2 rereleases on repeat.

Meanwhile factions could've truly been something. A fresh new take on multiplayer, a solid online game for people to enjoy themselves with... It makes me sick thinking about this. I know people that would genuinly be up for an old school shooter like that.

And instead Bungie was seen as the herald for new avenues of revenue: live service, clown shooters, concord was supposed to be the hottest shit.

Yeah, Factions on PS4/PS5 right now still has such a dedicated player base. You can find a match at any time of the day. Same with Uncharted 4.

Uncharted 3 has been recently revived by a private team called Uncharted Reloaded so I've been enjoying going back and playing that again. It's amazing the amount of content U3 had as compared to U4 (and really to multiplayer games today in general).

These guys are also reviving TLOU Factions on PS3 as well, in preparation for the eventual server shut down one day for the Remastered version PS4/PS5.

In a way, yes. Since you can afford being stupid, you're less afraid of the negative effects of stupid decisions. I guess that is what Sony decided to do. Trying to pull off a successful live service game was apparently worth 8 years of development and millions of dollars to them. Probably because they knew they'd still be ok if it fails.

But yeah, Sony has it really easy, so easy that the very lacking PS5 still sells well. And yet, they still manage to **** up. They could basically go on autopilot, but Sony keep finding ways to be dumb.
