Is Super Smash Brothers Brawl a Fighting game?

Yes. Smash Bros. is a fighting series. But it's not on the same level as Street Fighter or Virtua Fighter. Not even if you play it tournament-style, which is completely going against the point of the game. In other words, it's a very casual fighter at heart.

I still love it, though, because unlike some people, I don't feel insecure about playing "casual" games, nor do I think less of games that are "casual".

For the record, Smash Brothers is horrendously broken.sonicthemegaman

The game is especially broken when one bans 7/8 of it.

sure its a fighting game, its just an exceptionally poor one. just because it doesnt folloar all the genre conventions doesnt lock it out of a genre. fighting games are only viewed as having such narrow scope because most games are so formulaic. as developers explore the possibilities of the genre more in the future hopefully we will see more variety. its just too bad brawl is a popular deviation on the pattern beause it sucks
