Do having a game console with no wifi, no hard drive, and still having to pay $50 a year for online is a fantastic deal? You can't even play like 1/3 of the games out there (at least properly) without an expensive MS hard drive, one that comes cheaper if it comes with the 360.

TC, you cannot possibly be serious in any way shape or form in saying the arcade is a good deal.

SPYDER0416

Actually the $200 360 the TC is referring to has 4GB internal memory as well as Wifi. You're thinking of the old Arcade.

Wi fi eh? Well it finally has something PS3 has had for years lol.

But even the internal 4GB memory is extremely limited and doesn't count as a hard drive, the only way to even play co-op, use forge or play firefight in Halo Reach is by having an expensive hard drive. So you can consider it a great deal as you play half of your $60 game, or you could get an actual deal by not getting the gimped version that forces you to by an expensive drive to play something good. Don't even mention Forza 3, a game that cannot at ALL be played without the need to install to the drive, you know, making the whole 100% thing a little higher than in real life.

Not sure where people are getting this idea that a flash drive won't work as well as a HDD. Granted I was using a 16GB stick, it could still do everything I was doing with my HDD as long as I formatted it to work with the 360. In regard to Forza, no, you don't have to install to play. The game came with two discs, only using 1 to actually play the game which could work without installing anything. The other disc had some additional content like cars and tracks that you could install.

edit: Just saw you do need a HDD to play certain game modes in Reach, but I'm not aware of any other games like that.

I remember Skittles' thread regarding the purchase of a 4gb Arcade. Suffice to say, it didn't go over too well.

Yeah that thread was the first thing that came to mind when I read this thread's title.

I could see a lawsuit coming out of that one. I remember looking at the back of the box and it said some kind of storage was needed, but didn't specifically say a HDD.

Of course a 4GB PS3 model is not possible because many games require installs. This is another way that Blu-ray is keeping the PS3 too expensive. Even now that the drive prices have gone way down, the fact that installs are required, translates to hard drives are required and this keeps costs up.

alexfla

I know I'm just feeding the troll, but you do know that a 20gb laptop HDD would be dirt cheap if bought in mass by a manufacturer like Sony, right? I mean, you can get a 120 gb laptop HDD for like 40 bucks on newegg, and that's a markup price for end consumers.... You have to know this, don't you?

A HDD large enough to accommodate game saves and several large installs wouldn't be a primary factor in keeping PS3 prices high... that's just nonsense.

And yet it costs $130 for a 250gb hard drive when I could get twice as much memory for my PS3/PC for $30 less.

Its like giving us a large soda for 50 cents and charging $10 for the straw.

Apparently the issue is being looked into and is a problem on behalf of the game (Halo 3/ODST/Reach) not seeing the 4gb Flash mem as the requisite. Apparently it works on the old Arcades, for what that's worth with 256 megs of mem.

It has been proven many times over that it's easyto build a decent gaming PC with somewhere around 350$ and 500$, if we link "best deal" to overall value, yes the PC offers more, strictly for gaming and easy to pick up and play 299$ Ps3 definitely.

It's funny that you should ask this with Halo Reach coming out................seeing as you can't play portions of the online with this slim 360 unless you pay more for a harddrive. so my answer is clearly no, it's not the best deal around. Put a real harddrive and maybe add Blu-ray functionality, then yes at $200 it would be the best value.

First of all it has wifi, not only that, it has the MOST ADVANCED AND LATEST WIFI 'N' TECHNOLOGY. The PS3 is still using the snail slow and outdated 5 year old 'g' wifi.

Finally, you can play 100% of the games with it without the need for a hard drive.

Well, except Reach.

You guys are tripping. I just won a 4GB Slim, and it's an incredible piece of hardware for $200. Easily the best deal on the market.

What's with people acting like you need more than 4GB? Aside from optional game installs, 4GB is more than sufficient.

gamecubepad

Of course if you want to wait three times as long for loading times, no demos and no other form of DLC.

Your poll screams fanboy. I would say no based on the recent revelations that 4gig users can't play online coop Halo and other games due to Msofts unreasonable demands to purchase a hard drive.

kuu2

Actually it was confirmed today that this is a software issue that only affects the new slim 360s and only Halo3/ODST/Reach. Also, MS stated that they were working on a fix and should have one shortly.

Apparently a lot of online portions of games require hard drive and won't let you with flash memory, so I would say terrible deal. if fixed I would say decent deal, still not great, better off paying the extra 100 dollars.

This crazy upside down world you think I created is what is known as 'reality'. Have you noticed the 360 has DRAMATICALLY outsold the Wii 3 months in a row? This month things will be even better with Reach the 360 will put up HUGE numbers.

You see, normal people just see a $200 360 and think it's a great deal because IT REALLY IS. On this forum you guys make up stories and convince yourselves that it's garbage to damage control the situation.

I remember when cows were damage controlling the $600 launch price of the PS3 making countless threads about the 360 being more expensive.

It probably costs MS $1 for the 4GB of flash memory in each 360. A 60GB HD would probably cost Sony the same as a 20 GB HD so they would go with that instead. A 120 GB HD would be way too expensive.

I'm thinking it costs Sony 15 - 20 for a 60 GB HD and around 25 - 30 for a 120 GB HD. That is WAAAAAAAAAY too expensive to sell the PS3 at $200. The truth is, even if they could get a 20 GB HD for $1, they would take a loss if they lowered the PS3 down to $200.

Last month Sony was selling 120 GB HD PS3s for $300, this month they upgraded to the 160 GB for the same price. Don't you think they would sell if for $200 if they weren't going to lose money on it?

wouldn't the $150 arcade be a better deal anyways? IMO wireless is not needed because if you have wireless you probably have a laptop and it can have a bridge so the older model works about the same.

Show me.

From Newegg:

Athena slim micro-atx case + 400W PSU -> $50

Hitachi 500GB SATA 3.0Gb/s -> $54

Asus DVD-ROM -> $17

Logitech KB+Optical Mouse -> $22

Trendnet wireless G network adapter -> $8

Crucial 2x1GB DDR2 800 dual channel kit -> $39

Athlon II X2 245 2.9GHz dual-core CPU + Biostar MCP6P3 AM3 mobo -> $93

Asus HD 5750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 700MHz core, 720 spu's -> $90

Windows 7 Premium 64-bit -> $100

_____________

3-day shipping -> $25

Total: $498

Runs Crysis High Settings, 1680x1050 4xAA @ 30fps. High, 1080p 4xAA @ 25fps.

L4D Very High, 2560x1600 4xAA @ 39fps.

RE5 High, 2560x1600 4xAA @36fps.

Could have gone with something way cheaper, but this still fits nicely within the sub-$500 pricerange.

Why couldn't you have DLC? 4GB is enough for 2 DLC map packs for a game like COD4 or H3, then 6-10 XBLA games, 50-100 game saves, and you'd still have around 1GB left over. 16GB jump drive, or 20GB modded 360 HDD for only $25. Easy as that.

If you just aim to play games, save your data, and play online, then the 4GB would be a great deal. If you intend to do all the extras like DLC, expansions, co-op, etc, then you are better off with the 250GB or a PS3

By this post I can tell you don't own now and have never owned a 360. The load time is roughly the same when a game is installed or not installed. You gain maybe a 20% difference in some games and it's BARELY noticeable only if you're paying close attention.

You say the load times are 3 times as long? Provide evidence of this.

my web browser has some issues so I can't post links but it was written in Joystiq today, there was an article about load times with installed game vs without for Halo:Reach. I'm sure the reason why they did this was because of the issues with the installed Halo 3. Personally when I've installed games I've noticed the difference IMO games like Oblivion are a huge pain without an HDD. Of course this is actually up to about 3 times faster not always exactly that but the article is there at joystiq. I might change browsers if you aren't able to find it easily. I edited and went and and did what said I would http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/15/halo-reach-load-times-compared-hard-drive-install-vs-disc/

I also got to say that I love when people say they know that someone else hasn't played a game enough if they didn't like it or they can't possibly have ever owned a system if they have had a different experience with their system, without even looking at a person's profile or anything...there are clearly exclusive 360 games rated.

Oh I also got to add it makes the system play games much quieter but as far as I know with the new systems that isn't applicable.

Dont forget to add $60 for XBL. That comes out to $260. Add another $20 for the Play and Charge kit. Thats $280. Might as well get a PS3 and forget about making it $340 next year.

And you cant play Halo Reach co-op with the 4 GB model. Absolute fail.

I think its a great deal, its a great way for Wii and PS3 owners to experience what the 360 has to offer. Maybe not the best entry system, but it lets you play a whole host of great multiplats and (GASP!) exclusive.

Best deal for me. The amount of HDD space I use makes 4gb + 16gb from one of the portable USB HDDs that I have lying around the house more than enough for me. The 16gb is actually more free space than the 20gb HDD that my Pro came with. I wouldn't buy one if I wanted to play Halo co-op though, but i'm not much into FPS so it's not an issue for me.

waste of money the 360 needs a hdd to be complete and you spend more buying it separate than with the console. Also my 3 year old gpu smokes the 360.
