Is the Nintendo Wii U current gen?

It's going to take Microsoft and Sony at least 1-2 years for them to release a new console and pick up steam. The way I see it Wii U will be Nintendo's way of aquiring multi plat 3rd party games that Wii has been missing out on. The Wii U can even get AAA exclusives since it is supposedly slightly more powerful than 360/PS3 so bigger games can be developed on it that couldn't run on 360/PS3.

So when the next gen really starts the Wii U will be a great value at it's cheap price and then Nintendo can begin to release another console for the next gen and beyond(repeat). Basically Nintendo could just be doing mop up duty with the Wii U for current gen. Nintendo could also stick to it's 4-5 year cycles and release system's to fill in the gaps between gens and taking market share away from Sony and Microsoft. Am I wrong in this thinking?

It's a next gen system because of time.

it is a generation ahead of the current one. it's not that hard to understand. you might be the best person in the world. that doesn't mean that someone stupider than you, but that was born years ahead of you, isn't from a newer generation.BrunoBRS

Its next gen. Never saw a rule about next gen being about power. Wii was current gen, Wii u is next gen, imo.cainetao11

If people think Wii U is last gen than consoles in general aren't even current gen

Did we ever need to ask this question knowing that the last one was answered correctly and locked by a moderator? It is simple: the Wii U is a next generation console. Chronology is what determines a generation.

Anyone who denies that the Wii U is not a next generation console misunderstands what a "generation" really means.

Its next gen for nintendo which makes it current gen since since the wii has last gen hardware. In fact theirs probably a few xbox and ps 2 games that look better than any wii game.

It cant be a true next gen console since it wont be able to play next gen games.

Because 'What does it mean to be next gen?' can be answered in so many ways, I would say next gen is determined by time. And then you could still say the Wii U is underpowered for a next gen machine or whatever.

It will because it will run on some of the big name engines like unreal engine 4,cryengine 3 and it's future engines(maybe),frostbite2 and it's future engine ( maybe).This time the power excuse can not be used on the WiiU because it will be able to run most of the big next gen engines.The only thing that could kill the wii u's third party support is low third party software sales.It won't be a pain in the butt to downgrade a game onto the WiiU like it was on the Wii.

example: N64 vs. Psone. Get it through your thick skulls: hardware equality has nothing to do with what generation the hardware is in

Epic said that the engine has the ability to work on weaker products like the IPad with the use of a scaler.The PS4 or XBOX720 won't use the full power of the engine either.
