Hardly. If anything FPS are now more popular than ever. GS has just gotten tougher on them, though in my opinion not tough enough.
MW3 is the last FPS i'm buying. I'm not really a big FPS fan to begin with but COD really brought me back into the genre since Goldeneye 007 and Halo CE. I have other games I wanna spend some time playing like DC Universe Online, which I hope gets fixed soon cause i've enjoyed my time with it.. When I can actually get on lol! But there really isn't anything else that i'm interested in shooter wise and I don't see anything in the forseeable future.
Its crazy, but true. I hear moms, teachers and kids under 13 talking about it. The genre isn't going anywhere, let alone COD. Wait till COD struggles to break 2 million copies sold, then we'll talk.we will all laugh about this fad being over when mw3 is the first game to break a billion in sales opening week.
you and i may not be interested in it much but there are crazy amounts of people who are.

as a person who doesn't like shooters, I hope they die down... I liked it much better when sidescrollers were everywhere. They are coming back though... New super Mario Bros. Wii, Donkey Kong Country REturns, Super Meat boy, and soon to be Rayman Origins make me very happy to be a lover of 2d platformers :D
i agree, giving crysis 2 such a high rating..what were they thinking!!
:P
Hardly. If anything FPS are now more popular than ever. GS has just gotten tougher on them, though in my opinion not tough enough.

Crysis 2 isa great game. :|
Not yet. Games like CoD and Battlefield have popularized the genre, and it has really shown. That being said, we've seen some great games come out of other genres recently, so maybe the focus isn't as much on FPS as it was (in terms of the indisutry, not the gamers).
No, there is a plethora of reasons why FPS games are so successful:
1. They are immediately intuitive. Any person can look at a screen and instantly understand, "alright, I'm a dude holding a gun, this makes sense to me."
2. They can create engrossing single-player AND multi-player experiences. (whether developers choose to is another matter)
3. They can be both friendly to casual players, yet can have very high skill caps for professional (e-sport) play.
4. They are entertaining to watch for many people; e-sports have taken off in popularity recently.
5. Graphical powerhouses; most graphics kings seem to be FPS games. Now it's BF3 on PC, before that it was Crysis, before that is was some other FPS I'm sure like HL2 back in '04.
Ha, you think the FPS genre is a fad. That's funny.
Don't be silly. The FPS genre is definitely not a fad and it will never die.

At worst, it's an oversaturated genre, but even then FPS won't be going anywhere.
I hope the pure MP shooters will die down. I love the genre, just give me more titles with compelling storytelling and a lengthy SP campaign.
Namgis
FPS were and never really suppose to have a lengthy and engaging story, they are welcomed to have them but I and others don't really play FPS shooters for the story.
It's like looking back at Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, saying to yourself man these FPS have no story, well they didn't become famous/addictive/fun from the stories that were in them.
hell no. i bought mw3 this around 10 am today and logged on, there were already well over a million players online, and thats on ps3. On xbox theres sure to be a good bit more. i wouldn't be suprised if sales total 10 million copies in its first week.
The excess of FPS's won't end until CoD goes under. Who know's when that'll happen, maybe another year, or more.
Doesn't really matter, there will still be some great FPS's made regardless of the crap out there.

its oversaturated genre because FPS is the best genre. :)>Does this mean the FPS storm is finally slowing down and getting old?Bigboi500
Looks at CoD Preorder numbers
Yeah...
The FPS craze is a massive bubble it wont "Die down" if anything it will burst drastically when players finally grow tired of the same formula year after year. Signs of wearyness are appearing but are not at the breaking point yet. A few years, perhaps with the impending announcement of next generation systems in the coming years will make room for another Genre to rush in and pop the FPS bubble.
The big question is what genre will take it's place? Personally I'm rooting for RPG's to make a comeback.
You do know MW3 just came out right TC? And you are aware it's sold out right?
I think that answers your question........
I dont want them to die but I ant them to become less popular and more innovative.I wish 3D plattfomers would become more dominant. We have only Mario Galaxy games now, which single-handedly are keeping the 3D plattforming genre alive.
FPS are neither the most abundant genre nor the most popular one.
Within the western mainstream they certainly are the most popular but worldwide? No.
FPS wont die anytime soon either. Another revolution is possible, but the genre wont die. It is simply too diverse. You have boring cover based shooters like Killzone, fast paced shooters like Serious Sam BFE, military sims like ARMA and atmospheric shooters like STALKER. Heck, dephending on what goes on in Nintendo, they could even put mario in an FPS and make it feel Marioish. The genre is just that diverse.
Edit: For those wondering what is the biggest and most abundant genre out there it is the MMO. There are chinese MMOs that dwarfs WoW in player count.
Scoring bad (Yeah 8's aren't bad but everyone seems to think they are) does not = being a bad game. Battlefield 3 got an 8.5 and it's one of the most fun online games I've played since CoD 4.
Oh and @Kaszilla, People do still play FPS games that are 10 years old. I know for sure people still play Counter-Strike 1.6 and Source.
Are you seeing the same releases I am? There's a reason why CoD is the bestselling videogame series of all time (besides the stupidity of their market): FPS games are VERY popular. They aren't going anywhere.
