Is the recent decline of the 360 due to recession?

I'm not seeing the 360 in decline with ODST just out and Forza 3 & GTA EFLC close at hand, in fact 2010 looks to be epic for 360 gaming. :o

I work for a smallish IT consultant company, we manage the IT departments for other companies. From my own experiences and the opinions of our customers, Vista is trash. I can't blame MS for distancing themselves from Vista by dumping the name and relaunching Windows 6.1 as Windows 7.

Is it just me or does it seem like microsoft just doesnt care about the 360 anymore. With vista being utter garbage and the new windows 7 and the recession i figure in a meeting somewhere they basically gave up and are directing their focus on the pc and are letting the 360 fade to black. it doesnt make sense for them to not have a killer game for the holidays unless the bosses just dont care anymore. i know that the rrod cost them over a billion dollars and shareholders dont like that kinda thing. thoughts opinions and death threats below pleaseominous_titan

and for the first time ever i think i have to agree with Miz here xD, i mean they want to make it the best possible experience so they will cut back on other areas to focus on getting NATAL into more homes bigger titles.There could actually be a chance where some games may have been pushed back to be more compatable with NATAL who knows.Theres prolly games that were supposed to be announced aswell but maybe pushed back for NATAL.

And the fact Epic was saying UE3 was gonna be the engine for Natal could also maybe show Epic's working on a Natal centric project which be announced next year.

Companies have crappy years Ninty has had one,Sony's had one and now MS have.People shouldnt count their chickens before they have already hatched.

I honostly think MS has made enough money and market shareoff of the 360 and felt they could gamble a little bit and sacrifice this year to play the NATAL card next year.

Ummm, the net result of 360 sales is a loss of ~$3 billion, and they are a distant second in sales to the Wii.

Its just odd considering the 360 launched pretty strong and really pushed the system onto the masses and was very adamant about getting exclusives and stealing gta4 and this year its been very quiet. im thinkin halo reach and gears3 is the 360 last little hurrah before the 360 sails off into the sunset. i really doubt theres gonna be another xboxominous_titan

PS3 has had a very strong year, wait untill halo reach and gears 3 to bring them back, that's all they have right now. IMO

I imagine a lot of their time and money has been put into Windows 7. OS's are their biggest money maker, and they need to get back on top. Vista had some very public problems so my guess is they are pouring a lot of resources into this.

A lot of cows seems to have an early parade regarding the effects of the PS3 price drop. Nonetheless, despite PS3 having better value and some edge over the XBox 360, the sad reality is that XBox 360 still has the X Factor that made their sales still consistent. That factor sadly is pirate gamers. They might be not good for the market, but they do buy systems too and will likely not buy PS3 over XBox 360 for obvious reasons especially if there are a lot of exclusive and multiplatform in XBox 360 from PS3. This is also the reason why despite the PS3 price drop surge, its software sales does not follow and behind the XBox 360 software sales. Ironically, XBox 360 can be pirated while PS3 so far was unabled to be pirated; yet, XBox 360 software sales are higher, and its console sales is still consistent despite RROD issues. Zaistev_basic

Pirates are bad for M$, but they are GOOD for the market. More goods are changing hands that would not have normally. Classical economics says thats a good thing.

Vista's problems were in fact fixed by SP1. Windows 7 is of course better but Vista is fine.

I don't how much experience you have in operating systems but within the entire context of OS history Vista is a failure.

Considering the time that was spent to develop Vista and the fact that in most cases it ran worse on equivalent hardware than it's 5 year old predecessor Vista is turd, a shiny turd, but a turd all the same.

i actually liked vista. have had next to no problems with it. but i would like to upgrade to windows 7

i have used both operating systems. the thing i don't like about vista that almost every program all the way back to the late 90's work on xp. when only a small number of them work on vista.

know on to the 360 on the decline.

from the sales no. the 360 has sold around 5.5 million this year with the ps3 just selling 5.6 million. so no the 360 is not on the decline.

reading through this i realize there may be things more ironic than sony fans calling out MS for a lack of effort at taking care of their fanbase but for the life of me atm i can't think of a damned one

I guess it might be like that. The whole Xbox thing seems to be a big thought out plan...
Xbox was the best console previus generation, it had a preaty good userbase, alot of em were preaty devoted specialy cuz of Xbox Live. It was like a trailer for Xbox 360.
The 360 isnt the strongest console this gen. But its cheaper then PS3, it has a proven online system, and its got a good lineup of Xbox games. Its also released 1 year early then Wii and PS3. So instead of putting all their strenght into one console microsoft has laid down the groundwork for the 360 with the origian Xbox then had a strong launch with the 360, quickly getting a good chunk of the community. Also handicapping its competition. So now that the 360 is already proven, they might just leave it be till its last year. Again to create the groundwork for the next Xbox.

PS was more random, PS1 was revolutionary with the CD but its creation was spontaneus cuz of the whole Nintendo/Sony relations flop. Then PS2 was just built on the PS1s unexpected sucess. It didnt realy have any competition. So sony thought that the PS3 would be equal and would sell like hotcakes. But Microsoft threw a spanner in the works. Probably destroying the brandname loyalty... Sonys bad start lineup and high price didnt realy help either...

It does seem as if the 360 needs more than the price cuts to regain some momentum.

We've been in a recession for around 2 years now. We've seen decreasing sales, and people being more money conscious, but sales are still pretty good for consoles and software.

Vista is a good OS, you just have to turn a lot of it's annoyances off and really streamline it. It currently boots faster than any of my XP machines, and almost runs as well as them (barring the RAM usage).

if you are talking about recent decline in sales, i don't think it did, and if it did, not by much. 360's still sell, but not as much as the wii and ps3 didn't overtake NA in sales last month though i think it might this month. all in all i think ppl aren't getting rrod so they don't buy their 2nd or 3rd console.

as far as quality of games, 360 lives and dies with halo and 3rd party developers. i don't think ms has stacked up to sony's games since mgs4 came out for the ps3. most of their good 3rd party games got delayed...but it is going to go up against a lot of ps3's big guns as well. remember god of war 3 and gt5 are coming out next year. lets not forget heavy rain and others....

the only saving grace for ms is natal...

Oh ok, just making sure & I agree with you no exclusives. However I have played nearly nothing but new games on my 360 all year. I also managed to pick me up a PS3 as well, just too many great looking games released & releasing that I wasn't going to get to play unless I got one.

the 360 is dead........espeically if they think the failtal is going to do anything.....its nothing but a over expensive eye toy..........yes THE EYE TOY IS JUST AS GOOD AS FAILTAL........i really dont see how lemmings are prasiing this future failure........but i guess when you buy broken console anything is possible right......cows are the worst, HA at least they have common sense not to buy failure equipment THIS GEN!!!!!!!
