I've heard horror stories back in 2005 about how ~30% of xbox owners got the RRoD. Then, the Xbox Elite came out in 2007. All the people I know said RRoD was fixed, but then those eventually got RRoD too.

It's fricken 2012! I have a PS3 and Wii. Is it safe to get an Xbox 360 now?

Its been safe to get a 360, all the way back to 2005 its been safe.

And the 360S don't have the three red lights built into them, so it is impossible for them to ring...or at least show it. Plus all new 360s have a three year warranty attached to them

The slims were suppose to have fixedit, but still happening. I looked at the estimate of how many 360's had rrod, and if you lay them side by side, they would almost stretch completely across the US. That's messed up.

If you buy the Xbox 360 Slim model, you won't get a RROD, period. Why? Because there are no lights around the power ring anymore. :P

The other 360 models I had were not quite as reliable. I replaced my launch 360 model six (6) times, all under warranty (free of charge, at least). If you're in the market, avoid the older ones if at all possible.

Slims won't, because they don't have lights. It's still possible for them to have the same effect.

Since half or more of the sales are the regular/older 360s, it is not fixed.

RROD was fixed with the release of 360 slim, the death of your console im sure still happens.

I have had 3 xbox 360s die on me. Right now i have a 360 elite & i have had a few issues with it. I can tell it has a very short lifespan left. This is the nature of MS. My warranty expired last month. It only came with a 2YR warranty for the elite.

I was told 360 elite was suppose to have fixed the issue . . . . it didnt't. Im now told the Slim is suppose to fix the issue. The slim has been redisigned, while the other modles hadnt so i'd say the SLim has the SLimmest chance oif dying.

If your going to get one the time is now. Just be glad you waited . . . . but then again the system has no games & they charge you for your own internet connection twice. You should be safe but keep what i said in mind.

I think only 2-3 months is a little quick to call it safe.

Anyway, I do hear that the slim models are much more reliable. I don't know if they're on PS3/Wii levels of reliability though.

Well there's technically far more reasons to get one now than at launch;

Backlog, cheapest price it's ever been etc.

No, it's just that, everyone I knew who had RRoD usually didn't take care of their Xbox very well. They like sometimes hit their xbox when it wouldn't turn on and stuff.

RROD on older models were s high as 50% or more, all fat 360 will RROD at one point, the slim models don't RROD is not that they don't get damage or fail, don't get me wrong is that MS actually eliminate RROD warning system from the slim model, and while they have actually fix the problem,i haven't read about problems with it,they can get damage and they fail just not like the fat ones or close, and RROD was actually replace on the slim 360 for another king of warning system for MS.

The RROD was fixed with the jasper model 360, MS found that the problem was the substrate layer between the GPU and the mother board, it wasn't rated for high enough temperatures and would warp from cyclic heat damage cracking the ball grid array, the Jasper model sported a new improved substrate layer, they knew about this before the Falcon model but couldn't fix it as they needed time to research new materials for the substrate layer. "Fortunately, SquareTrade found that Xbox 360 quality has improved dramatically since the third quarter of 2008, shortly before the 65nm CPU/GPU "Jasper" model was introduced. Since then, first-year failure rates have plummeted to below the 4 percent the company projected. Looking at 500 units purchased in 2009, SquareTrade found that less than 1 percent had suffered the Red Ring of Death." http://uk.gamespot.com/news/xbox--6216691 The new slim model constantly measures it's own temperature and will shut down before the unit heats up enough to do any damage, obvioulsy there is still the chance of buying a 'lemon' console that is faulty but the 360's failure rate is well within industry standards now.

It wasn't fix and all fat 360 models will RROD,the xbox 360 did not had a single problem it was many,i know you posted a link and all but in fact RROD is a system of warning implemented by MS to know what problem your 360 has,the xbox 360 has tons of problems there are several codes with different problems, that go from GPU,to CPU,to power supply,DRE,ram problems you name it.. RROD is what tell MS what problem your unit actually has,and like many have come to learn the 360 has many,in fact you can google RROD code if you want to,xbox 360 to this day still RROD,in the fat model is not a matter of if,is a matter of when your console will RROD,the jasper model actually reduce the problem.but below 4% is a joke,MS has lie about RROD before and since the start,if you ask them if their console is reliable they would tell you that it is,in fact they have never stop saying that the units is reliable even when fail rates were as high as 50% or more.

but it wasn't MS that stated the RROD was below 4% it was square trade, a company that specialises in hardware insurance, and that included ALL failures of whic only 1% where RROD, reading comprehension FTW, and RROD is only used to describe 3 red rings, a general hardware failure, all the other failures have a dfferent ring code not 3 red rings except for E74 and MS issued an apology and admitted there was a problem with the 360 when they announced the extended warranty so to say they never admitted the 360 was not reliable is a flat out lie. "Yes, it is true. As part of our standard and ongoing process of analyzing repair data, we recently noticed a higher than usual number of units coming in for repair. Upon further investigation, it was further discovered that the bulk of the units were isolated to a group that was part of the initial manufacturing run of the console. Returns for repair are coming in for a variety reasons and it's a higher rate than we are satisfied with. We've made the decision to comp repairs for consoles manufactured before January 1, and provide refunds to the small group of customers who have already paid for repairs." http://hexus.net/gaming/news/xbox-360/6796-free-repairs-microsoft-admit-faulty-xbox-360-batch/ Alos , that 50% failure rate you keep talking about was never proven so you basically pulled that figure out of your backside mate

Its higher than 50%. Everybody i've ever met that has owned a 360 has had their hardware fail on them. I've had it happen 3 times ( & i take excellent care of any & everything i own ) & i gurantee it will happen again with my 360 elite. I bet the failure rate is actually 90% or higher.

All Fat 360's came with 3 year warranties so it really was a non-issue on MS's tab. I've had my Jasper Fall 2009 model running well since I bought it then, and its been two years with no issues. I know people who went through half a dozen PS2s, whereas my launch unit still works fine. Heck, my Wii broke. You've got to take your chances, its worth it in the end, it was for me.

It's been two years for me and no issues. I have a friend who plays his 360 religiously and he's not gotten a single RRoD on his second unit since 2007. That's almost 5 years now. Its not that likely. Sure, its a huge deal. But 90%, no. off topic: I do find it irritating when I see friends complain about the RRoD and they have the 360 with a DVD/Blu Ray player stacked on top or on bottom of the console with both playing games/movies everyday in a small cramp space near a floor.

I'd be surprised at this point if anyone had a working launch xbox 360 and if they do they probably haven't played it that much.

Its been safe to get a 360, all the way back to 2005 its been safe.

And the 360S don't have the three red lights built into them, so it is impossible for them to ring...or at least show it. Plus all new 360s have a three year warranty attached to them

R3FURBISHED

No, not at all.

Thought that warranty only covered RROD.
Mine ran out, and then the 360 RROD'd, again. Fun times.

All Original Xbox 360 (Fat Models, not Slims) have a 3 year warranty for the RRoD, as well as the E74 error.

Jasper Xbox 360's have been around since 2008 which fixed the overheating problem. I've had mine since they came out and no problem. chaoz-king

Unfortunately, my Jasper 360 just went bad a few months ago. I believe in October, which really sucked since I don't even play the 360 that much considering my PC time, PS3 time, DS time, Wii time, et cetera.

I replaced it with a slim. I have had 4 RRODs this gen, one E74, but I'm thinking the slim will be a much better product.

Had a Slim for two years now, never given me any issues.

Actually, there was a minor incident where the system would just flash lights and wouldn't boot up, but it turned out to be a temporary overheating issue, and I could go back to playing it in an hour.

That was my fault anyway, the console was all but entombed in a box. I don't advise that :P

Well, it hasn't been out for two years, but it's been like over a year and a half (June-July 2010 I believe when it first came out), but I am glad to hear that nonetheless. :P I think depending on when you bought it, it will be two years old in June or July (NA got it early in June, but NA/AU got it in July).

It's good to know about your good fortune thus far. That falls in line with what I was hoping for, and what I have heard from some friends that jumped in early. I was waiting and hoping my older units wouldn't fail, and I could avoid a rebuy, but no such luck. I managed to save some money on the wait though. :P

As far as having them in a box, I learned last gen with my Xboxs and PS2's not to enclose them, play on shag carpeting, etc. Totally feel you there. :P I went through a few PS2 and a few Xbox's. My later PS2 slims and Halo Xbox's have been good though.:P

Lol, that's what i meant, I just remembered buying it in 2010 :P

And you'll like the Slim, it feels like a much more well built and solidly constructed piece of hardware overall.

And yeah, that was stupid of me, but being college demands compromises. I had little space, and I tried doing the best I could :P

The only hardware that hasn't given me any trouble so far is Nintendo hardware. Like my Gamecube fell about five feet when we were playing Super Smash because someone yanked the cord too hard, and with the disc still spinning, and... it continued running as it had been. We were all so surprised and so relieved :P

The build quality of the 3DS though leaves something to be desired :?

If you buy the Xbox 360 Slim model, you won't get a RROD, period. Why? Because there are no lights around the power ring anymore. :P

The other 360 models I had were not quite as reliable. I replaced my launch 360 model six (6) times, all under warranty (free of charge, at least). If you're in the market, avoid the older ones if at all possible.

I don't think it matters, it seems that lemmings will buy hardware no matter how faulty or flawed it is.

Like any hardware problem I'm sure it's not completely gone but it is very rare now and is nothing like the problem it was 4-5 years ago.

wasn't it you who posted the pictures of your's red dotting from overheating with the error message and everybody flamed you saying it was fake? i remember that, lol dropped my GC as well, about 3 foot, took a big chunk of plastic out of it just above the ATI sticker but it still worked like a charm after that, lol
