I would say sony misunderstood some of the games people wanted as psp was a successful system. Some people just have no interest in tablet,phone or nintendo gamingSony has misunderstood the handheld market which is increasingly losing ground to the smartphone and tablet crowd. Nintendo are safer because people already very much associate them with their handhelds but even they have lost ground with the 3DS, albeit not to the same degree.
