Maybe the PS2 was a casual console too... Because of the freaking price!

Casuals don't like paying 400 bucks for a videogame console. It's as simple as that.

not by a longshot. It's the ps1, because of the easy piracy. The wii might become that casual-based some day, but it isn't atm

It was only "weak" in hardware, and casuals don't care about that.

that would be the NES. it brought home videogaming into a whole new level helped expanded the video game market to what it is today. before it, there were many systems like atari that just brought arcade game into the home, but it was the NES that appealed to arcade gamers (the old school version of hardcore gamers) as well as to casuals.

lol, sorry that is just so wrong. Graphics are casual-bait, everyone knows it. Great graphics are a shortlived kind of appeal, hardcore gamers are after gameplay and story. PS2 succeeded in getting casuals becauseit had games that casuals like

you clearly only see what you want. the ps2 had more games you would consider casual than hardcore. it's just that they get no attention here. the M rated games are disproportionally hyped here.

SNES and NES were not weak systems. PS and PS2 were the first time a weaker system won in sales.

I'll give you SNES, but there were stronger systems than the NES later on. Don't forget how the GB systems and DS have been stomping the stronger competition.

He means it exposed casuals to quality games that hardcore gamers loved as well. For instance, Final Fantasy VII sold over 9 million copies. Believe Me. Most of the people who played it were casual gamers. The PS1 exposed casuals to games that pushed the boundaries of story-telling and gameplay. In fact, with its quality library, the PS1 turned many casuals into hardcore gamers. For instance, one of my buddies had never played an RPG before FF VII. Now, he's a bigger RPG freak than I am.

The Wii, on the other hand, seems to be content to shove out cheap, easy-to-play titles in an attempt to appeal to casuals. I'm hoping that with more sales and more time, Nintendo can change my mind. But right now, it's not looking so good.

ppl make it sound like it's the wii that makes games. it's just a vcr for games. it's the developers that make the games. and the wii is clearly more powerful than the ps2 thus games of greater quality are certainly possible. don't blame the console for the fault of the developers that didn't believe it would succeed.

I think we see more threads about HAZE, GTA, MGS4, Halo3, Crysis, killzone than we here about any of the great games you mentioned. sad but true.

I would have to say yes, as someone who works in a game store the only people that for the Wii, are not gamers, they are between the ages of 35-50 and most of them just want it for their kids or parties. Most Gamers who wanted the Wii pre-order about 5 months before the consoles launch like I did. But I got rid of mine, never play it for weeks, need money to buy new pc and I kept my Gamecube. If some great games come out for it, between 5-10 only on the Wii, I may end up re-buying one, but I can't see that happening any time soon.

Quoted for truth. I work at a bank, and the uncles/aunts/married, poker players are the only ones I know buying the console. If you have kids, nieces, nephews, it can be a really good way to introduce them to games, and play as a family. No denying that. Its hard to tell if the family/party appeal will continue to sell consoles.

I'm waiting on Wii 2 personally, by then I should have kids old enough to make the system worthwhile.

First party sets the standard. Wii Sports, Wii Play, Mario Party 8, and Super Paper Mario set the example of what sells and third party mainly follows. The console set up its own image.
