I'm a lemming, but it is very apparent that Nintendo is thus far the king of this generation. However, many on these boards and elsewhere have argued that the Wii is lacking in both graphics and gameplay. Do you think Nintendo's next console will be like the Wii, interesting yet underpowered, or will Nintendo turn its newfound profitability into the most powerful console yet seen?

True, true. I think they just might do that.

With all the money they're making, I certainly think they could. I never envisioned myself as a sheep, but who knows.

It'll be good for their next console. Their next console will definitely be better graphically than the Wii... of course, the Wii is better graphically than the GC. It really depends on the environment and market at that time. If Nintendo does indeed expand the market to a large enough size, I can definitely see them coming out with a console that will compete against the others. If not, then they'll probably update the graphics enough to make developing games managable enough for devs.

I'm hoping they rely on more than a controller as a gimmick to sell their next console because, lets face it, other than the few Nintendo titles (Super Smash, Zelda, and Mario) there really isn't anything else that is very stimulating. It was the same with the GC though...and i still had one of those.

Why would they turn their next console into a powerhouse? That would be a complete contradiction on their "market disruption" theory.

If by powerhouse you mean more powerful than the 360 and PS3, then I agree; I don't see Nintendo going that route. But if you are saying it won't be as powerful as the 360 and PS3 is now, then I don't agree, since in four to five years time, technology for those systems will be vastly cheaper and easier to produce, and Nintendo can still sell their next console at an affordable price.

I don't really think so. I think it makes sense to have an innovative control scheme while challenging Microsoft and Sony for pure processing power. If they can successfully expand the market, then why not also go after the hardcore gamer. If you can do both, then do both. Nintendo is in an interesting position right now. It will be interesting to see what they do.

I was saying that if they made their console more powerful than the other consoles at the time, it would be a contradiction. Basically, I'm saying that I was suggesting option A. :)

It's pretty obvious they're gon make a super OD powerful system, but one that still has the inviting factor of the Wii that makes even old folks wanna play it.

Well Nintendo will only have to compete with themselves next-gen because both Sony and Microsoft will fail the gaming industry miserably.

That would make their console too expensive.

Good point. I wonder what they will do with their controller. For some reason, I don't think it will remain exactly the same as it is now, though I certainly don't think it will become more conventional.

Whatever they do, it's gonna have to fall between a $200-$300 price tag. N is not going to expand the markt only to turn around and relase a $400-$600 system that their expanded market won't pay for or can't afford. So whatever tech goes into it, it will be limited by that price tag.

I tend to agree with you on the price argument. By the next generation, I imagine that you could sell a console with greater processing power than the PS3 and the 360 for $300.

Most likely...but N will also want to sell for a profit and will prolly throw in more advanced motion tech.

Also, do they throw in a game bundle? How exspensive will controllers be next time around? What about VC titles? will you be able to transfer them from the wii tot the wii2?

M$ is in the race.
Nintendo can't release a superior console in terms of power as long as M$ will focus on this.

I predict that Wii2 will be able to run games like Crysis (which will be nothing special in 4 years) and be cheaper than 300USD

Microsoft must focus on making a more reliable console. I'm on my third 360 now and it's beginning to irk me a bit. I get the feeling that it may crash every time I turn it on and I really don't like that.

Graphical power isn't going to alter that much in the next gen. The power behind the scenes is getting to a bigger deal (physics, A.I., etc.) and will probably be the bigger focus in the next gen from the "powerhouse" console. Nintendo has pretty successfully differentiated itself from a PC in this gen, which is something that Sony and MS are blindly rushing into. Sony also hasn't drastically revamped their controller in 3 generations. Their lack of innovation with peripherals is a sore spot with me. When it all boils down, it's the same game with a nice veneer.

Nintendo will certainly beef up the hardware, but not to what you are imagining. Hardware that has been out longer is more well known among devs in it's idiosyncratic tweaks, tricks, and strengths. Thisability to get to know the hardware andleverage it's strengths is one of the majoradvantages to console gaming over PC. Nintendorealizes this withthe results fromprevious consoles. They won't go greatly above the specs of the PS3 and will put together a set of hardware that is easy to developand utilize and doesn't have thebugs that new hardware does.

There is a lot to be said with using tools you know are tested. Just take a look at the hardware issues that are holding back the PS3 and 360. The profits from this gen will go into marketing, R&D for next gen on nonhardware, developing new IP's, and thecontinuation of existing IP's.

they already said the next one would be HD so that's more powerful than current already. most powerful? maybe but only slightly. remember that they will not want to price themselves out of the mainstream like ps3 did.
