you would need large network backbones to distribute that type of data and a powerful enough connections on the user end to be able to recieve it(either by being connected to the servers 24/7 or by having to download the data into your hdd)

Google could, but people have a tendency to take for granted the work MS puts into Windows. Sure it's not as pretty as Leopard or as feel-good as Linux, but there's a reason why MS dominates the OS market besides "OMG teh monopoliez!". They have a huge workforce that allows them to create a platform for virtually every situation that is both easy to use and easily customizable. The amount of capital you would have to spend just to attempt to compete with MS on a global scale is stupefying.

Microsoft (and XP's) strength is that everybody uses it, everybody supports it, and it's basically set the standard for how things work to many people. Competition's pretty much caught in a catch-22 right now.

Personally whats really keeping MS in the OS market is

  • Office
  • DirectX
  • Pre-installed units with major manufacturers (Dell,HP, Toshiba)

It makes sense to have one dominant OS. Software / game ddevelopers and hardware companies can focus on one platform. That's what made computers so popular and drove the prices down.

lol forgot to sign into your alt account? Anyway with the monopoly microsoft has in the OS market and their endless pockets i doubt we'll see a true challenge.

Its been happening for years, its just people are too lazy to learn a new OS. You have Red Hat, Ubuntu, and Mac OS. All of those are leaps and bounds better than Windows.Vasichko
Ive used and had Ubuntu, and Mac OS X.

Neither are better then Windows.

Ubuntu's game support is actually pretty good if you use Wine.

Is that a joke? It's easy for IM and internet surfing but certain things like installing basic drivers can be a major task for the average Joe.

If it was any good then people would take Linux seriously as a gamer OS; which they don't.

No kidding, I tried to update flash on a EEE PC one time and it required consoles and crap. What's wrong with a damn executable auto install?

Well duh, its not like its going to be 100% accurate. But the vast majority of games for Windows do run on Wine.

i dunno... microsoft is just standard these days. i'm a mac guy, but i think leopard would lose it's appeal if mac osx was standard.

Just out of curiosity, had anyone here heard anything recent regarding Oracle's OS that's meant to challenge Windows? I thought it was supposed to release this year.

Plenty of people know about it, and how crappy it is. There's gaps, gltiches, and performance problems abound.

It's not a legitimate alternative to running Windows.

Don't be silly. Try getting it to do everything windows does, as well as windows does without problems. It's a lose/lose situation, even if it is possible it's not something the average joe is willing to go through.

Windows being dominant is a good thing, hell any OS being dominant is good, if we had various OS about it'd make things a lot trickier for your average joe. Ialso don't get the point in this topic, no,there is no one to properly compete with MS.

You have Mac and Linux but eh..they just..exist. There not a threat and Microsoft could put an end to them, they have the means they'd just get sued into the ground.

Open source operating systems may not be ready to challenge Windows, but open source web browsers sure are challenging Internet Explorer! Watch Firefox eat away at Internet Explorer's market share!
