I was just thinking about this, and other than the fact it is kiddie friendly, there is nothing to warrant its title at the top of the generation...

What is your take on it? Discuss.

Bingo. And I do have to hand it for Nintendo with only 1 SKU. Much, much easier for the consumer.

Marketing/appeal.

Cheap

Stylish White ( IPOD SYNDROME )

Casual Waggle love - My dad was amazed with the Wii Sports, especially the golf, and then I said "You could play other golf games, alot more holes, alot more precise ect ect.

"Nah I like actually doing the movement".

-_- ...... but the Wii Swing is nothing like gold and often fails.

I say one part of the wiis big sales is all the parent with small children. Cheapest price and still shuts the kids up. I also watched a news story on the local news one night about a rest home buying a wii for every resident they had. I busted out laughing when I watched it because all I could do was think of system wars.

Attention to Lemmings, Cows and Hermits!!!: The gamecube was 99$ last gen and it still lost horribly, so the Wii's price doesn't count.

It counts when the competition cost so much more. Not to mention the Gamecube didn't start at $99. It worded it's way down to $99. Nice try though. ;)

Actually, it's started out at the price of two hundred bucks. The price gap between the Gamecube and the Ps2 and X-box was smaller compared to the price gaps between the Wii and the Ps3 and 360. The gamecube wasnt one hundred bucks till later in it's life.

It does when the others are priced at 400+. Also, the games are $10 cheaper. Add that with some great marketing skills and Mario and you have a winner.

...have you like, not seen the 360 price? It's hardly "so much more". Plus this has already been debunked, an arcade 360 costs less than a Wii in Europe and itstill doesn't sell as much as a Wii.

There seems to be a metric crap load of  from the anti-Wii movement today, are we getting upset because we are nervous that Nintendo will have something up their sleeves this E3? It sells because it is fun, and there are still some gamers out there that enjoy a little fun from time to time :|, maybe it is often seen as a second console but it sell regardless.

Actually the Xbox 360 is selling for less than the Wii in some world regions. And still it's being outsold even in these places. Of course the PS3 is also outselling the 360 on a monthly basis, despite costing considerably more (especially outside of the US).

Not to mention the Gamecube didn't start at $99. It worded it's way down to $99. Nice try though. ;)Bubblehash

No, but it did start out at 199. Which was still a hundred bucks less than the competition.

Simple .Because its cheaper than the ps3/360. Do you think it wouldve sold as much if the price was like 400 for a cheap hardware like wii's? People just buy it so they have a right to say that "I own a next-get console" when truly i dont put the wii in this gen but its fits perfectly in the last gen. I think people also but the wii because they want to give the new motion sensing a try. Nintendo showes the controller in action when it mimics very good in the gameplay like a steering wheel for exite truck but they wouldnt show all the bad controls. So that makes ppl think of how good the controller would be for the other games and go buy it but after they will get bored. Only fun at first. And that my friend how i got tricked. Now i regret buying it since i never play it, not even SSBB. So those are all the reasons why i think nintendo seels well, not because its a superior console against ps3/360 but just great advertising and marketing.

Great marketing is one reason. Casual appeal, price, name brand recognition, ease of use and some big games made the Wii a success.

Now price can be disputed, but this gen, the competing gaming consoles started out at $399 and $599... which is expensive for gamers in general. There is a big difference in price between the PS3 and Wii... and the 360 at $399 is still pretty high. It's a factor since the economy is down, but it's certainly not the only reason.

agreed. its nowhere near as good as 360/ps3 in anyway. we all got tricked from its advertising of motion sensing. they only showed quick good parts and made us want to buy it but i regret so much. absolutly waste of $250. it should be like $120

The ps3 and 360 are fun, but they're not selling nearly as good as the Wii for one reason, the Wii is being marketed for non-gamers and i don't think it's even in the same competition as the ps3 and 360. PS3/360 are being marketed as gaming consoles, while the Wii is being marketed as an excercise/party machine, with few great titles such as SMG/Zelda/metroid that would appeal to hardcore ninty gamers and the rest is what, Wii fit?? Wii sports?? Wii play?? cooking mama?? wario ware?? and the ton of shovelware that would appeal only to casuals. I've also noticed that most hardcore gamers don't have a Wii as thier only gaming machine.

Of course the games are going to be cheap!! Have you ever the quality of those with ps3/360 games?? $50 is too much for those, they are only worth like $25-$30 IMO. The games look like it only took a week to make them. Except for only some of the 1st party titles like SMG SSBB and ZELDA:TP, the should be like $40 but mostly all the 3rd party ones are so stupid and horrible games.

yes you can, but it doesn't change that it's being marketed more as a training/party machine as it is as a gaming console, and the ammount of games on the Wii that would appeal to hardcores aren't nearly as much as the ammount the ps3/360 has.

Ohhhhh so most of the Wii's sales are from Ebay sales?

Oh of course lol

So now casuals stay outside all night for a Wii but they also pay hundreds of dollars more then they have to for the Wii

Which kills the whole "The Wii sells because it's cheaper" argument

Hardcore nintendo fans did support the GC :|, ya know, that's what "hardcore" is all about, it's just that the GC wasn't a better gaming machine than the ps2 or even Xbox, just like the Wii isn't a better gaming machine than the ps360, only difference is nongamers are buying the Wii, while sony and microsoft are catering to the hardcore.

the Wii is being marketed for non-gamers and i don't think it's even in the same competition as the ps3 and 360.

So you still think that non gamers get up at 2am to camp out in the winter for a Wii?

Well, it's wrong but it's interesting

those are the hardcore nintendo fans, which imo don't even make up the majority of the people that bought the Wii.

Oh I see, the hardcore Nintendo fans that didn't support the Gamecube but do support the Wii?

Those crazy hardcore fans always taking every odd generation off to show their support!

I agree the Wii isn't as Hardcore as the PS3/360, but it still has a hardcore community. For instance both Resident Evil games which are both M rated have sold over a million copies and Guitar Hero 3 for the Wii has as many online players as the 360 version.

So it seems as if were both right.:)

But I disagree as the Wii being a Party/Exercise Machine. The Wii's library consists more than just Party Games and Exercise games. And Wii Fit was an Exercise game because it had to show the Ballance Board's capabilties, and what better way than with an Exercise program (which consists of Mini-Games, which technically ARE games).

It's fun, and has games that people want to play.

Sure it doesn't have the ultra hardcore franchises that gameing elitist that visit messageboards and such care about, but it's got the games that most gamers want to play...

Face it, if your core enough to waste your time on SW's or fight over specs, number of lines of resolution or the amount of grass in GTAIV, then your one of the elite, and not a standard normal gamer who doesn't care about any of this stuff and doesn't know what franchies are going to which console two years in advance.

Don't You think it's because games are slowly growing, changing into more complete virtual experiences, communities, realities?
Lot of games feel like they are trying to replace parts of our lifes, instead of adding to our existing lifes.
They demand too much energy and time for general people to put in to.
Sometimes You just want to have fun or something and be done with it, to move on with Your schedule.
That's what most of the wii stuff is.
I think both takes on games will be very important and can be enjoyed by gamers.
It's just that until there is a very steady stream of core games (more so than on its competitors) i can imagine gamers who have 2 systems will play more on another system that sucks them into something, and rarely play on their wii. Safe for when they picked up a core title or when they get reminded (when friends come over). But hopefully they have a great time as well as other people when turning it on.

Yep - those non-gamers made an interestesting profit on Ebay as well. :|

Nice try though.

Ohhhhh so most of the Wii's sales are from Ebay sales?

Oh of course lol

So now casuals stay outside all night for a Wii but they also pay hundreds of dollars more then they have to for the Wii

Which kills the whole "The Wii sells because it's cheaper" argument

Are you pessimistic and a troll?

You asked a very simple question: "So you still think that non gamers get up at 2am to camp out in the winter for a Wii?" When in fact some do - to make a quick, and not to mention large buck. Did I say most? No. Do not try to twist what I say to make you look like you know what you're talking about - you don't.

Nice try though, maybe this time your benighted views won't cloud your reasoning. :|

Good marketing, good price (compared to other current-gen systems) and it appeals to a far larger crowd than the other two.

The price and the Wiimote.
