Male Video Game Heroes look too much like guys in Western Games.... put some lipstick on Marcus Fenix and feather his hair, and BAM! 5 million units sold in Japan alone.

They probably distance themselves from American games for the same reason that some Americans distance themselves from Anime-looking games. Aesthetics.
i think someone posted an article where it stated that japanese gamers prefer laid back games while western games are into the whole competitive scene, i dunno, it was a long time ago, so i might be wrongDante2710
That would make sense, considering the differences between our two cultures.

They probably have stupid reasons like this one as well ("Men in Japanese games are effeminate").

Is that a dude in your sig or a chick? I can't tell...Japanese culture has confused me again. Also to the other guy saying the same can be said about the west and Japanese games...not it can't. We actually do give it a chance.
If anyone can name me a first person japanese online shooter, please, tell me where i can find it. I am so interested to see what one would be likeVendettaRed07
I can't think of a single japanese FPS, the closest thing to it that i can think of is Lost Planet. Anyways, hope they never start making FPSs, we are getting enough of them as it is.
I've always wondered if the way games are translated has something to do with it. Maybe western games are ported or translated poorly so they don't seem as good as the home-grown games. Or maybe most Japanese gamers are into anime-RPG games and they don't care for competitive squad combat.
Seriously though, I think it's a cultural thing where they don't like violence as much as Americans. Although some of the most violent video entertainment I've ever seen is Japanese.

There was a poll made by Famitsu a while ago about FPSs, like 80% of the people said they already tried FPS games. So they do give it a chance. There was other questions regarding FPSs too but i can't remember.

There was one on Xbox. I can't remember the title, but I do remember being able to throw up in the game.

It's a girl. Its not hard to tell.
There are Japanese gamers who give it a chance. There's a blog out there of a Japanese gamer who loves tons of western games.
Is there something wrong with Japanese games that Westerners won't even try? That generalization goes both ways.foxhound_fox
Not necessarily. There are tons of Japanese games that sell extremly well here, whereas I've read post about most western games barely breaking a million over at Japan. Unless your talking about those hentai tentacle raping games....
you do have a point tho, femininity and masculinity isn't a big thing over there, they actually take masculinity as revolting thing in many ways....i found that weird. What did they find revolting (what masculine traits)?

Anyway, American movies and music are popular in Japan.

Western hair cuts for one weren't a good looking thing unless u were 40 and had a comb over. The scruff of a mans beard can be really bad looking to alot of people, showing off your muscles was not a plus (surprisingly) and either was being super skinny. Having a good sense of style, keeping yourself up to date with looks was a big thing over there and if u didn't u were more of less a social reject, everyone plays games and everyone really does the same thing. It just that aesthetics are a HUGE thing over there.[QUOTE="hakanakumono"][QUOTE="LibertySaint"][QUOTE="Veterngamer"]you do have a point tho, femininity and masculinity isn't a big thing over there, they actually take masculinity as revolting thing in many ways....i found that weird. What about Coded Arms on the PSP? It's from Konami.

Yeah, but remeber there is alot more to them, its like any culture, there is this part, that part and even that part over there. This is just the part i experinced.

Haha. You are indeed right. It's really a difference in our culture; and perhaps diversity. Japan isn't exactly a diverse country compared to some of the western nations like the UK, France, Canada, and US. That's one reason why the industry is larger in North America and Europe. In the past few years mobile gaming has almost taken center stage, especially with cell phones in Japan. Several Japanese developers have even explained why the linear game design is still popular there. PC gaming isn't big either in Japan, and there are some still skeptical about online gaming even on consoles. Japan is quite different in the game industry as opposed to everywhere else. Even though Japanese developers remain loyal to their home, because of money alone they have realized that it'll take more then the Japan community(Square Enix being the perfect example).
Here's two things I'm almost certain about:
1) For them, Goku >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rambo. A lot of western games' protagonists are basically a bunch Rambo clones with all the badassery, muscles, guns and whatnot. And, of course, most Japanese games' protagonists are very anime-like.
2) According to Kojima, motion sickness is rather common among people in Japan. A lot of FPS make them feel sick. It happens to me with Metroid Prime 3, and if they get half as sick with most FPS as I get with Metroid Prime 3, I can understand why some of them wouldn't go anywhere near the genre. I'll still beat one day, though! I know I will! :P
i used to live and born in vietnam. i was influence a lot by the japanese. most of ppl in my country have ps2 at 1 point and no one ever heard of the thing call xbox. when i move to US, i still stick to PS generation cause of japanese game. i like japanese game much better then western for few reason.
1. charcater look bit feminie therefore i get attractive to the charcater. i am straight 100% but i DO like japanese game char lot better with feminie look than western game char with huge muscle.
2. cut scence. yup, it make the game experice way better for me.
3.the gameplay just so much better. i tried witcher since i heard it a great RPG but i just cant seem to get into it

There's just a big difference in culture. What the one likes a lot, the other dislikes. For example, the japanese would rather not control the camera position. They just find it difficult. On the other hand us western gamers get really irritated when there's a fixed camera position gone wrong. There's lots of differences like this, and I think there was an article on this once.
By the way, it's not like the japanese are blindsided by typically western games. Capcom has developed a shooter too (lost planet), and apparantly they wanted to try it because they liked Halo CE so much.
the japanese have a strong belief in supporting their own economy. plain and simple. nintendo and sony are japanese brands, so they buy em. it has nothing to do with types of games. resistance, if i remember correctly, was well recieved in japan.enygma500
Hmmm what about the iPod though? that sells really well in Japan does it not. I think they are very arrogant were games are concerned though and believe theirs are better and nothing else is worth looking into, they are the exact same way with kids cartoon shows (they actually had Power Puff girls redone in anime lmao).
i agree with the last guy,do you think you have tried all the japanese genres?
dating sims?i guess no except hentai dating sims hehe.
look how it goes american people like fps ,world war games and madden games at least 80% of them
japanese people like rpgs/action/sims/waku waku crazy stf at least 80% of them
and europe likes everything but has a huge love for pro evolution soccer at least 80% of them .
thats the deal.you think you have taste in video games ,they think they have taste in video games,we think we have taste in video games.its like food one likes a pizza one likes beans
also who told you that everyone likes rambo like chars with huge muscles and armors?i take chris redfield than any of the gym clowns that play in the new fps's

I love pizza and beans. :D
And Pork and Beans is a great song. :D
And I totally agree with your post.
What can be the problem here? Ok you say they don't like shooters? We make more than just shooters you know. What's the problem here? Is it because none of the characters look like eachother and have stupid spiked up hair? Is it because our games don't have overacting? Anyway, it doesn't matter...it's the fact that they don't even give it a chance is what annoys me the most. Ilived
Its ironic that you claim Japanese don't give your games a chance...in a post bashing and spreading every cliche about Japanese games. Maybe you aren't giving THEM a chance?
Oh, and p.s. why do you care anyway? What difference does it make to you, unless you are a 360 fanboy who can't appreciate his own console and games unless it is #1 in sales world wide? Japanese don't care about 360 or FPS. Get over it.
And, of course, most Japanese games' protagonists are very anime-like.LordQuorthonYou simply cannot overgeneralize japanese entertainment like that. There are so many notable exceptions to the norm that its not even funny. Stereotyping anime and japanese games shows a general lack of exposure to both anime and the japanese gaming market. I could sit here and list dozens upon dozens of western themed anime like Berserk, Monster, Goglo 13, etc. There is no such thing as an "anime" stereotype. Its nothing more than a creation of the unindoctrinated western Otaku. I could also sit here listing dozens of JRPGs on the market that are besides the norm as well. In other words? There are plenty of western themed games and entertainment in Japan. As a matter of fact, Japanese people have an emphatic love with German culture for some reason. Berserk is probably the most notable example, being strongly based off of a 14th centure german knight by a similar name. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdpqV7RPnTE It is not so much a general dislike for western themed media that has the Japanese turned off, far from it. It has more to do with economic concerns.
the japanese have a strong belief in supporting their own economy. plain and simple. nintendo and sony are japanese brands, so they buy em. it has nothing to do with types of games. resistance, if i remember correctly, was well recieved in japan.enygma500
Isn't it the same for any nation? America is not innocent of this.

+1 I am sure they don't like the fact that 95% of our games are either sports or shooters. Like honestly, how many times in a year do you see good WRPG's and MMORPG's that are made in North America get released? The truth is that we don't produce the same variety of games that they do which is why they don't play them, they tend to avoid the umpteenth rehash of a Madden or NBA game because they are not stupid enough to buy into the severe milkage that are sports and shooters which have not been original for a long time.
