the western formula is even older and really sucks imo.... Persona 3 uses turned based combat and its great and its actually a challenge unlike the steaming pile called oblivion.

Or have JRPG's been more non-traditional in the past couple of years.

Like FF12 which uses a western battle gameplay.

Because Blue Dragon ( way too traditonal and it FLOP Badly.)

Is the old forumla dead?

Turned based sucks ass even in Wrpgs.

JRPG or not, turn-based games an important style of gameplay. I don't know about the rest of your but the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars series are turn-based and hell of a lot of fun and I wouldn't change it for anything. You just gotta come up with a formula that works and let the fun follow.

Yeah, there is, but since there's not much else that can be done with turn-based RPG games, there needs to be a better emphasis on the story, because this whole "little orphan amnesiac hero whose home village was burned down" crap is extremely stale.Smoke_ManMuscle

you see those stories in all fantasy based RPGs, not just Japanese ones.

Ok look,Blue Dragon is considered AAA+ to JRPG fans, the review was centred towards everyone,it did not flop to the market it was catering for.

The fact that it's called JAPANESE role playing game, tells you that it's meant for the Japanese market because it's made by Japanese developers, that's not to say it won't sell outside of Japan, but in terms of reviews,Blue dragon scored much higher with Japanese Reviewers compared to Western reviewers.

So what I'm trying to say is that JRPG will always be around as long as Japan is around,Unless they go through some massive cultural change and i don't see that happening anytime soon...

true,i miss the world maps, adds to the epic feel of the gameussjme

I'll second that. I hated having to inoput co-ordinates on FFX to get to secret areas. That was just plain boring.

In my opinion no what gaming needs is an imaginative gameplay not the same gameplay as a few years ago but re-skinned into a new appearance.

Many turn based combat RPG does tweak it in different ways and none of them are really identical to each other.

If you say all turn based combat is the same, I can say the same about FPS genre.
