Eh, yea, Probably agree with that assessment. Certainly not bad.
Very memorable for me. Square-Enix delivering an absolutely fantastic remake of Final Fantasy VII. Same with Capcom and Resident Evil 2. Capcom making a big time comeback with Devil May Cry 5 and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Nintendo setting the gaming world on fire with the Switch and numerous excellent games. Hideo Kojima really bringing something unique and different with Death Stranding. There was a lot this gen that made it quite memorable for me.
Good games, but the only thing i will remember from the 8th gen is dynamic resolution and sub 30fps in almost every single game released.
Very memorable.
First COD I've enjoyed since COD 2.
HL: Alyx
VR in general.
Fell back in love with flight/space simulators.
Was Prey and Dishonored this gen? Add those to the list.
I cannot believe that this generation can be forgettable by some here due to what the coronavirus pandemic had done to gaming and the industry. I will say that this generation will be one that will be memorable other than the pandemic.
For me it was pretty much forgettable minus the VR stuff.

VR is the most memorable thing for you 2, shit I keep forgetting people on here have low standards lol.
I wouldn't say this gen was forgettable (unless you're a cow) as I got a few gems this gen, but not as good as some other gens.

Hate to break it to you but the Switch is not this gen its next gen.

Good old consoles. Always good for a laugh.
Last gen had better games and more quality IPs introduced for the first time. This gen was more of the same with little innovation.
None of them are forgettable, but I think its best stuff is going to stay great. For instance gen 5 is "memorable" for a shit load of reasons, but there is a reason people think that era aged so poorly (it didn't age, those games were always actually that bad), because for all their land mark genre pushing Ocarina was pretty shlock, and so were other games like MGS1 (which was frankly a lesser Metal Gear 2), or the n64 fps games which were wildly outclassed by PC shooters like Quake and Unreal n Tribes.
This gen's best stuff, as in not the shit the journos gassed up, because outside The Witcher 3 which will constantly be apologized for, the other big critical darlings will come down a few notches. But shit like Hitman 2 the best Hitman game, The Ori games, Rainbow Six Siege, Rocket League, Tekken 7, Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Doom: Eternal, The Witness, Zachtronics games, Celeste, are all mad strong.
On balance I think the direction a lot of single player titles went this past gen was also better than late gen 7 where it felt like everything was all about the super streamline life. Instead games are more willing to add mechanics and layers to the core systems. We had a period where Halo and Call of Duty actually tried to spice up their movement for a bit. Which is far cry from how slow the FPS has gotten.
I have pretty high hopes for my eventual play through of Hollow Knight, Nioh 2, and when Valorant is in full swing. In the beta for that and its rock solid.
VR unimpressed with what I've tried. At first it felt like the most transcendent shit, and at least as tech its cool as ****. But I like depth to my gameplay, and a lot of the VR games are gimmicky ass motion shit. While there are cool FPS tricks like being able to be dual wielding handguns and shoot them in two different directions, and taking weird peaks n blind fires around corners, the actual moving n shooting is a dramatic step down even further from how slowed down multiplayer fps games are.
Now if some divine sage can make an Arena FPS work in VR, I'll begin to give more of a shit.
Best since 90s/early 2000s. i mean it cant beat 2004-2007 but better than last gen easily
theres tons of reason why this gen is better than previous gen but the biggest problem is. most of AAA mainstream title are trash. as expected. plus the open world and RPG elements saturation ruined it. another thing is. most of non FPS games sucked this gen. havenot enjoyed them really.
Very memorable.

Yeah COD MW 2019 was the first Infinity Ward game I've enjoyed in a long time.
Their singleplayer campaign was certainly one of the greats.
Prey and Dishonored 2 released this gen, as well as DOOM, DOOM: Eternal and Wolfenstein 2. I'd say Bethesda did really good too, as a publisher.

It's last gen based on performance. LOL

That may be the case, however it is a "next gen" machine.

Pretty forgettable. Come to think of it, everything after gen 6 has been forgettable. Sony makes their boring as **** movie games for casuals. Microsoft has just been plain sucking. Nintendo still refuse to use their goddamn IPs. PC has continued getting lame ass third party console games instead of games made for PC.
A few gems here and there aside, it's been largely forgettable. Ignoring VR this gen because I don't have a headset, gen 6 was probably the last innovative gen.

PC is only saving grace. nintendo still making childish games and will forever make childish games.

I'm so childish. If only I could be mature like you, only playing 4 different FPSs.
It even has a "hardcore" mode just for you: removes all the HUD and makes the game harder.
thats excuse to make game "hardcore". its like bioshock infinite has 1999 mode but point is. can they remove scripted sequence and remake level design more complex to make game more "hardcore"? of course not.
lazy way to make game hard.

One of the best gens. If you say otherwise you either didn't play a lot or stick to a certain type of game.
Don't care what anyone says, this gen was outstanding...on the gaming PC side and of course, VR & Switch brought something to the gaming table. So yes, I really enjoy this gen what it offer and of course, the games I played this gen was amazing.
Just remember, if your that type of person who didn't play certain titles and saying this gen sucks, that's really your fault!

Current gen WiiU/XB1/PS4
Next gen Switch/SeX/PS5
No gen and pointless PC lol.
These are the facts, learn to live with it :)

This gen has many problems actually.
microtransactions, greedy publishers, open world, RPG elements, games talking long time to release, less games etc
but the thing is most people only look at AAA mainstream titles. and most mainstream titles has been crap either this gen or last gen.

While I do agree microtransactions are part of the problem, gamers are the blame for buying into this shit in the first place but then again, gamers are now fighting back this addiction problem and telling publishers to back the fucks off and look how EA respond, they got scared and they at least put out decent games like Jedi Fallen Order with no microtransactions BS.
AAA Mainstream games have been a hit for me, Sony, MS, Nintendo had put out good hits I enjoy out of this gen. Its only a problem if you didn't like certain AAA titles that's not your fancy. And plus, PC had tons of support this gen and this is a huge part for this gen alone. PC gaming has rise again and that's well more important.

I don't know man for me this gen lacked big time there was not enough new IP's especially compared to previous generations. I think publishers are to scared to take risk these days so they just end up making remasters, remakes or sequels. There's only a handful of new Ip's I can think of this gen that are good but man overall to me this gen just felt boring.

the problem is not new ip as reboots and sequels are still kicking. problem is open world fatigue.
MGS5 turn out to be one of the most boring game this gen and would be better if it was linear. now its third person far cry.
this gen assassins creed and far cry become yearly iteration. rehash every year.
open world is modern military shooter of this gen.

I'd agree with some of this, but not a lot of it.
It's true a lot of VR software isn't what it should be. Be it short, repetitive games or poor, lazy conversions that's merely an excuse for a contemporary price.
Stuff like faster paced shooters is perfectly doable, games like Doom, Quake I/II and Serious Sam have all had conversions and are all perfectly playable with the caveat that person playing, being able to operate at that pace is essentially a coin flip. Some people can instantly use it from the start, others can when worked up to it through repetition and others straight up even with teleport can barely spent 15-20 minutes in VR.
Slow paced games like Walking Dead: Saints And Sinners and Halflife: Alyx have a stronger focus on the actual mechanics of shooting and exploration. In a typical FPS run into a room, smash crate, point, shoot. Repeat. These blink of an eye steps become far more involved where-by players will naturally spend more time doing it. That has it's own problem of stuff like Boneworks, where it attempts to push these VR aspects far as it can go but crumbles in on itself in the process.
VR in general is still not figure out and still not getting the support it really deserves. Halflife: Alyx in particular didn't invent anything new, it just implemented the cores better and wrapped it round a proper AAA product that Valve was in a unique position to delivery where others simply aren't willing.
This generation has been revolutionary for Nintendo Sony have continued to produce quality but have also taken a huge chance on VR which has paid off on a small scale. Xbox have been hugely disappointing and gave up 3-4 years into the generation.
Honestly, I'd say this gen was pretty damn fantastic. We got ports of almost all my favorite series. Remakes of beloved classics with modern graphics and gameplay. Then we get reboots or spiritual successors of essentially dead series (Wreckfest, God of War) that breathed some much needed life into them. We also got some great continuations to favorite existing IPs. Then add in some really fun new IPs such as Horizon, For Honor, Detroit BH, Destiny, etc.
It was a great gen. Probably my favourite after gaming nearly 35 years.
@warmblur:

Perfectly sums up my view.
I've played dozens of games form this gen and own every system so I'm not missing out on anything.
@i_p_daily: Well actually the Switch is “current” gen for Nintendo since “next” gen would infer something that has yet to come. Now if the question had been about generation 8 specific then yeah I guess you’d have to exclude the Switch from the conversation.
Yeah COD MW 2019 was the first Infinity Ward game I've enjoyed in a long time.
Its something i have no desire to play actually.
Really? Figure you'd love. Lot's of badass dudes in it, good shooting, cool guns. Seems like your kind of game.
Multiplayer is a lot of fun, too, it's a very complete package they got the traditional small-scale deathmatch, the larger-scale ground war (similar to Battlefield), and then Warzone and Plunder.

looks too scripted and consolized for my taste.
Completely forgettable. There's a lot more variety in games now, especially in the indie scene but it's mostly A and AA games, which is alright but not something to remember.
AAA games have gone down the drain with mostly sequels or generic open world desgin which I hate. I blame gamers actually, companies follow the money.
This gen been fun. Many overrated games though like BoTW and Witcher 3 to name a few.
I think you forgot how to spell Horizon Zero Dawn :)
Generation of remakes and reboots of games that were good 10-15 years ago. This gen sucked bad. Just about every MP 1st person shooter degraded from previous entries. Battlefield especially. I mean Bad Company 2 is still years ahead of any other BF out there.
It's memorable for me cause of Capcom remaking Resident Evil 2. Shenmue 3 finally getting released after 18 years of the second game. Insomniac Games releasing a Spiderman game that made you feel like Spiderman and apart of the world similar to Infamous. Yakuza 0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2, Yakuza 6; I never gotten to give Yakuza a chance but those games certainly made me a fan. God of War, I loved the previous games but seeing a reboot of the franchise and it take ques from Dark Souls and other games and give us a different side of Kratos with a family was surprising and well done.

Nah, this is the first gen when I absolutely hated the PC. Note, I mainly play strategy games and simulation so I'm getting my fix, but AAA PC big budget games are dead. Mainly its a multiplatform/indie/F2P platform. Really sad, because I grew up with PC gaming.
