@ConanTheStoner: Maybe you should compare what you are playing now to each year before? I have been playing a substantial amount more of Japanese games. For the most part I've had all systems for a while now and can definitely see the difference. While you and Champ tend to stick more to your PC/fighting game community.
Hmm, I thought I already mentioned it one of my earlier posts, maybe I scrapped that point, but yeah. A large chunk of my gaming diet is Japanese games. Has been for 30 years now. That never changed.
Even if we're just looking at this gen, my favorite games of each year (If we consider 2013 the starting point of this gen) were Japanese games. And that's even if we don't count fighting games, which really makes no sense, as all of the fighting games I like are also Japanese lol. Not sure why those would be excluded. Not sure why PC would be excluded either as I enjoy a large chunk of Japanese games on that platform as well. And it's not like Champ and I don't game on consoles. As a matter of fact, now that I look at it, I bought my current consoles strictly for Japanese games lol.
So no, it's not like @jg4xchamp and I exist in a bubble where we don't pay attention to games from that region or games on consoles. On the contrary, Japanese games are almost consistently my favorites and I believe Champ has similar opinions on the matter.
I'd definitely be willing to admit that 2016 was a weaker year in Japanese games for my tastes, but that's about it. Still, my personal tastes aside, 2016 had Dark Souls 3, Final Fantasy XV, The Last Guardian, Street Fighter V, Dragon Quest Builders, etc.

Anyways man, we could argue in circles forever, obviously we don't see eye to eye here.
I believe it's a combo of two things going on. Like I said before, a lot of studios just happened to bare fruit this year. Aside from that, you personally happen to enjoy the Japanese games that dropped this year. As far as quality and volume goes though, I think you could have just as easily made this argument for 2015.
I'm not seeing a shift here. You are. Is what it is mang.
