http://consumerist.com/assets/resources/2007/11/Front-thumb.jpgWe now have pictures of the Playstation 3 that Sony refused to repair under warranty because the unit was too dusty. Sony originally claimed that the pictures would not be released without a subpoena, and that the dust presented a threat to their technician's health that could only be alleviated if our tipster paid $150. After our posts, Sony abruptly reversed course and released the pictures to our tipster. Sony's letter, the pictures, and our poll, after the jump.
Thank you for contacting us regarding our Warranty policy as it pertains to the condition of your PLAYSTATION 3 console.

After consultation with legal counsel, SCEA has determined that the photographs of your console as returned to our service center are neither confidential nor private. Consequently, we may lawfully release these photographs to you. Because the photographs are not confidential, we may also release them to media who inquire about your recent internet postings concerning the console.

Too dusty. There's something in the PS3 warranty about your cleaning habits?

Depends if the lack of cleaning resulted in the dust clogging up the circuitry inside and frying it.

Couldn't the person that sent if off or the technician just take out a few minutes of their time to get the dust out...

I'm not a strict housekeeper or anything, but if I had any electronics that looked like that I'd be ashamed. My NES in my parents basement is cleaner than that.

I like how it's a health hazard(which is most likley true)until you pony up $150 then it's no longer a threat to the poor techs health and they will make the guy fix it.

That's not dust. That is actual dirt. Look at those card readers slots and those have a fold down cover over them. I blasted Sony for not fixing it originally. But that is flat out negligence on the owners part. If you are going to treat something like crap, you can't expect people to fix it for you. I think warranties imply defects not abuse.

If there is nothing wrong with the PS3 other then dust Sony absolutely should repair it for free, regardless of the amount of dust present.

HOWEVER, you really have to wonder why the guy didnt take a damp cloth and run it over the body of the console before sening it out :|

How do you let your console get that frickin dusty? He needs to get some compressed air in a can and clean the **** out of it. It'll probably start working then.

Maybe he should stop playing his console at a construction site.

Sony is so sad..........now they have to release pictures to try to make themselves look good. You know it would have been cheaper to fix the counsel then waste man hours for those involved in addition tobeing an excellentPR move. Sony management is seriously flawed in how they conduct business.

You really dust your PS3? Thats a little anal. Well maybe if it was used to play games instead of a center peice maybe dust wouldn't gather on it. PS3 owners know about this. Xbox owers don't have to dust cause they actully play games on it so there is no time for dust to gather. Dust gathers on my picture frames cause I don't move them, are you saying that your PS3 is equivalent to a picture frame, just something to be looked at.

But to answerthe question, Yes Sony has the right to refuse this console. Who knows what kind of dust this is or where it came from. It could be asbestos, it could have mold. I myself have asthma, and this console screams asthma attack. If the system needs to be fixed because the dust got into the circuits then that would be user error / user misuse, and you would have to flip the bill not Sony. It's almost the same as me dumping a PS3 in some toilet water and saying "Is this to wet to be repaired under warranty? Think about it.

I can't believe that the person who sent it in didn't try to clean it off a bit. I mean how hard is it to just wipe off the outside of the console.

And how the heck did it get so dusty anyway. If a kid is playing that console in an envirnment where a system can accumulate that much dust, I'm guessing that he/she will must have some serious health issues. Looks like whoever owns this PS3 either lives in a mine or a quarry.

The funny thing is it really can get that dusty.

I clean my stuff every week... Soon as I wipe my PS3 with a micro fiber cloth... I can see it literally suck the dust out of the air onto it.

In a weeks time there is a thick fluffy layer of dust on it and inside the media card tray.

Dude EVERYTHING gathers dust. Its not like your consoles jumps around as you play video games it stays stationary all the time. I mean TVs gather tons of dust and they get used more then any other electronic out there. Using doesnt stop it from gather dust, you just have to maintain it.

I honestly donty know how a ps3 can get that dusty. I dont even clean my consoles and they very rarely get noticable dust, in which case i just give it a little wipe. Then again it looks more like dirt than dust and it looks like the owner has done something to it, possibly spilled a vaccum bag on it or something but how someone can let an expensive thing like that get in such a condition is beyond me.

Here we go again..

last time sony refused to fix the DDE in the ps2...

now they refuse to fix their ps3...

if sony can find a way to stick-it to their customers, they will find it..... :(

they could learn a few things from MS about how to stand behind your consoles...

Sony should repair it for it is the fault the owner had no games to play on it.Medic_B

such a fanboy comment. The PS3 has most of the good XBOX 360 games. There are a few exclusives the 360 has to its name and so does the PS3, which are better is a matter of preference.

idk... isn't that what reviews are for?

if a game gets reviewed AAA status and another gets a 4.5... are you going to say the one at 4.5 is better becuase you PREFER it?

that's just silly.....
