Poll Is this the worst console generation yet for MS? (88 votes)

Yes, absolutely. 56%
Absolutely not. 25%
Yes, so far. But there is still time. The Scorpio will change things. 5%
No, but if the Scorpio does not turn things around for MS, it will be the worst gen yet. 5%
Sleep paralysis is a condition in which you awaken unable to move or speak, and often have a very bad feeling that something evil is in the room with you. If you've experienced this, or do experience this regularly, and want some form of advice, reach out. I believe I can help. 10%

Luck, it would seem, has not been on MS's side this gen. The XB1 had a horridly botched launch. MS had to backpedal up the wazoo to try to fix things, which involved them changing pretty much their entire original plan for the XB1. Then Sony sold a ton of PS4s, and then sold more, and more, and more, and more, and.....more. MS has been dominated this gen both locally and worldwide by Sony to the point that they don't even report sales numbers anymore. And then there are the closures of studios and game cancellations, including the axing of one of their biggest prospects in Scalebound. On top of all this, the utter and complete loss of XB1 exclusives cannot be looked past. Sony is literally burying MS under a mountain of exclusives these days. MS has had to go back to the drawing board in the middle of the generation, making not a console upgrade but an entirely new console, the Scorpio, and throwing likely the lot of their gaming division's resources at it in the process. And this is just an abbreviated list of all the rather unfortunate decisions and outcomes that have plagued MS all gen long. In the meantime, Sony just keeps on keepin' on, steamrolling the competition.

So, I ask you, SW. Has this been the worst console generation for MS?

If it is, that CAN'T be saying much, considering the good stuff it still has going for it.

For the most part, XBO is not gaining gamers from Wii.

This gen really feels like a continuation of last gen, it's like the 360 never really ended. Other than Halo 3 and Reach, I'd say the exclusives are kinda even, maybe slightly better favoring the 360? I still really like Halo MCC, Sunset Overdrive, Forza 5, Rare Replay, etc

@hrt_rulz01: that's the hard part, because once software/hardware features come into it it is almost always the newest that is the "best" - from a purely objective standpoint the X1 is the most feature rich and is of course the most powerful. So it's tricky with these discussions to put myself in the mindset of the time and forget what is available now.

CPU solution in the current game consoles are about 2.8X better than last gen i.e. PS4's CPU vs X360's CPU.

PS4's CPU and X360's CPU are lowest common denominator for game play modeling.

Most of PS3's CELL SPEs was geared towards patching the aging RSX GPU i.e. 4 SPEs patching RSX, 2 SPEs for X360's 2 extra PPEs and 1 SPE for OS/DRM. SPEs patching RSX means patching missing modern GPU features in RSX.

Any CPU gain in XBO/PS4 was consumed by driving larger GPUs e.g. GPU FLOPS gain for X360 to XBO is 5.5X.

Crackdown 3's area wide destruction physics demo was remotely powered by Intel Xeon Haswell/Broadwell class CPUs.

MS and Sony geared their funds towards GPU bias than CPUs. Most PS4/XBO game programmers allocate the majority of GPU's for graphics.

For example, Project Cars PS4 build has up to four CPUs for rendering command list generation threads and there's very little remaining CPU power for AI/Physics/Game world tracking. Rendering command list generation threads are about telling the GPU what to render.

98 / 6 CPU cores at 1.6 Ghz (PS4)= 16.3 for each core. 16.3 x 2 remaining CPU cores = 32.6

If you allocate 1/3 of Xbox 360's PPE X3 for GPU command list building, it yields = 22.44

Can you see why XBO/PS4 feels like last gen game play?

I do think the XB1 is easily the weakest of the 3 XB consoles from a library stand point .

The OG managed to outsell the GC which isn't bad for a first try and the 360 and PS3 pretty much finished in a tie. So they've taken a step back in terms of marketshare , so in some sense it might be the worst for MS as well.

All those things are nice and all, but it is a game console. The few exclusives the platform has have pretty much all bombed except for Forza.

GAME console. Games are the most important part of a game console. Xbox has had flop after flop, while Sony has been knocking them out of the park.

That's why Xbone is getting outsold 2:1.

If people really preferred PS4s exclusives it would of reflected on the exclusives sales and so far they aren't doing very good except for Uncharted. That's not the reason the Xbox is being outsold 2 to 1. The reason they are being outsold is because of the news/rumors saying the Xbox was going to be always online, DMR, and other features deemed wrong by the gaming community that put Microsoft behind on the 1st half of the generation. People simply flocked to the PS4 and their friends went with their PS4 because of that bad press Microsoft had but most importantly because their friends had an PS4. Word of mouth killed the 1st half of Microsoft generation sales. Now barely Microsoft is recovering from it thanks to massive marketing strategy, BC, GWG and other services Microsft brags about in their advertisements. Also bundling the console with games such as Halo 5, Forza Horizon, Gears, 2k16 and other games as well as the price cut.

The ps4 also has better game performance in most games. Also it was 100 bucks more at launch. This gave the ps4 a huge boost in sales and MS has been playing catch up from then. At the end of the year the only thing xbox won't be better at is the exclusive game list.

If they can market the changes they made vs the ps4 sales should increase.

@ConanTheStoner: Did you like the 360 all through its lifespan?

I didn't keep it through the whole gen. Had a lot of life stuff going on and the PS3 was more than enough to occupy what little game time I had.

But that first half of the gen it was simply the box to have. Best multiplats and plenty of worthwhile exclusive content. I'm sure it continued to be a very respectable console through the rest of gen 7, but the PS3 started coming along with some solid releases and was all I needed at that point... plus the Wii as a secondary lol.

---

On the subject of the OG vs the XB1. I can understand the argument for the Xbone being the better console, but the OG was a damn good console to me.

Graphics/performance that utterly destroyed the competition, resulting in significantly superior multiplats. Not this bullshit where we have to put things under a microscope to see a difference, it was clear as day. Playing something like Chaos Theory on PS2 rather than Xbox just seemed hilarious for example. It would be like comparing max settings PC versions to the Xbone versions these days.

Plenty of good/great exclusives, including one of my all time favorites, Ninja Gaiden Black.

Online functionality that completely destroyed the competition. You just couldn't get that experience on the other two boxes, not even close.

Plenty of western titles that would usually be considered PC only games. If you didn't own a solid PC at the time, Xbox was a decent enough alternative.

OG just had a whole lot to set itself apart. I don't see that with the Xbone.

it isn't an exaggeration to say the XB1 so far has the weakest exclusive library of any console since the 6th generation

Went with abs. Not. MS has had a strong showing in multiplayer/co-op gaming. Xbox Live has gradually grown and expanded with great updates, especially with xbox 360 BC and your digitally/physically owned carrying over. Games with Gold has been strong with some nice free games along the way. Finally, with Xbox Scorpio coming, MS is going to have its best gen ever and who knows what else is coming along with Scorpio.

On Xbox 360 i had about 60 games. With Xbox One, ive purchased about 25 games, and then have 100+ bc/games with gold. Xbox One has given me more games than i have time to play. Im getting all the multiplayer/co-op games of current gen and getting tons of past games i missed out on or offer great co-op/multiplayer experiences i can jump into all from one place.

@ConanTheStoner: I see where you're coming from. I never had the OG Xbox. I loved the PS2 and GC. Then the 360 took my heart the next gen lol.

Exclusives are such a small part of a systems library it shouldn't be used as the measuring stick.

when Nintendo and Sony have had success with their consoles is because of their exclusives.

When the 360 was having success, it was because it was having more exclusives over the PS3 early on.

360 was also performing better in multiplats at that point as well.

PS4 sold fast from launch, in its first year there wasnt many exclusives.

there wasnt many exclusives on the PS4, but the promise and common knowledge that Sony always provides quality exclusive was enough for people to feel secure.

Unlike M$ where the promise of quality variety exclusive is always a dark cloud.

Yep. People trust Sony will eventually put out quality exclusives, and a lot of them. That definitely factored into early sales of the PS4.

I guess it has to be since both the Xbox and 360 redefined and pushed the industry dramatically forward while the Xbox One is probably their most consumer driven console but not as innovative.

I don't think so. I think it is better than the 1st Xbox but the 360 was the best. The Xbox one could not have had a worst launch. Mandatory Kinect (that no one wanted) and $100 more for a weaker/slower machine.

Even though PlayStation has many more exclusives, I still prefer Xbox (Forza, gears, halo, 1st titanfall, dead rising, rare replay, killer instinct, and oir and the blind forest). I looking forward to Sea of thieves, crackdown, cuphead, and state of decay.

I don’t have a gaming pc, so it does not bother me that pc gets Xbox games.

The only PS games I jealous of is Street Fighter 5, uncharted, and Horizon.

I think the main reason PS have been domination sales is they did everything right from the get go, more powerful machine for the same cost (cheaper as launch), and there is parts of the world that hate Xbox.

In terms of exclusive games, I'd say this generation for MS is definitely weaker.

Sony has had 2 very strong generations prior to the Ps3, so they made a name for themselfs. A more or less "weaker" gen in between hurt them a little but they seem to have learned from it. It shows how big the playstation brand is. People dont hesitate to go back to buy a Playstation console.

I'm not saying it is unfair to compare the two though. MS seems to have made some stupid decisions this gen, where as Sony made better ones.

The hardware and service from MS is good, or good enough atleast. But people want games. Its wise to invest you money in good teams to produce good games. A good lineup in games is the first thing what potential customers see.

*I guess we have to wait and see what happens next. With their play everything, everywhere philosophy and all. They seem to invest alot of money in that now next to the Scorpio. I have no idea if their games division and the xbone is profitable or not, but I'm guessing it is. So maybe things will change in the future if they are willing to spend their money in a different way.

Rare (game company) has allocated 150 employees to the failed Kinect Sports Rivals which is a large distraction for other game projects

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_developed_by_Rare

Xbox 360 era

Kameo: Elements of Power (2005)

Perfect Dark Zero (2005)

Viva Piñata (2006)

Jetpac Refuelled (2007)

Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise(2008)

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (2008)

Kinect Sports (2010)

Kinect Sports: Season Two (2011)

--------------

XBO era

Killer Instinct (2013)

Kinect Sports Rivals (2014) <----- this could be a non-Kinect game. The sales failure has lead to losing some employees which are mostly in management positions. Wii U's failure was an early warning.

Rare Replay (2015) //compilation

Sea of Thieves (2017) <--- Rare is back to their usual game projects.

Bestest lol gen ever..Evah by far with stellar free games with GWG and too many AAA games to play in a lifetime. And now for the first time this gen greatness continues with Mighty Scorpio. Thank you MS, jazz.

Sony/Nintendo this gen on the other hand = Dooooomed I tellz ya. :P

How can someone be a lem this gen? There surely is nothing to brag about when the Xbox Division Head is begging for games in Japan.

Maybe Lems have an underdog complex.

360 had a lot of awesome games, and a lot of awesome exclusives. Xbox One does not even have most games that you cant get on pc too, with better performance and graphics. There is no reason to get an Xbone, where there were, even given the RROD (which I got once, slong with a bum cd drive), many reasons to get a 360.
