Do you think Wii is "next-gen"?

--

Personally I'm not sure. It depends how you define "next-gen". If you define it as in advancement in video gaming, then no: the Wii is not an advancement, it is just an artistic/fun/creative combination of the best things in gaming from the past 15 (give or take a few) years. If you "next-gen" define as simply the next game consoles put out by each company, then yes, obviously.

So, how do you define "next-gen" and is the Wii that? I'm sort of hopingI canend some of those threads about is the Wii next-gen or not by making one that simply ask yes or no instead of saying "OMG Wii is not next-gen" or "OMG Wii is 1000000000 times better than PS360. Bahhahhahh". lol

IMO the Wii's a joke. Sure it's fun to play and has decent games but Nintendo sold out and made a cheap system just to make money. I have lost all respect for Nintendo. I love the ds though. So in other words a big fat NO.

The X360 and PS3 may be next gen in graphics and sound, but developers are still writing the same old stories but placing fancier covers on them. The Wii is next gen not in graphics but in User Interface.

I'm pretty sure next-gen means an upgrade in everything (even the PS3 controller and the Xbox 360 controller had an upgrade) Therefore the Wii is not next-gen because graphics and sound are not next-gen

No it's not, and that "yes" is winning, shows the abundance of sheep, seeing as how nintendo themselves even said the Wii is NOT NEXT GEN. they said NEW-GEN. It lacks next gen hardware, and features. but its not last-gen either. It's definitely NEW-GEN. It's in a world of its own.

Nononono, not best at UI. UI is totally different than what you're thinking of.. I dislike their GUI more than either the 360's or the PS3's... it's not moddable enough.

I'd describe it, as, well, not next-gen. It was a risky move by Nintendo to try and alter the course of game consoles, and personally, I hate it...

But then again, I've always been a PC gamer at heart, dragged to consoles by things like Halo 2-3, God of War, Zelda, Super smash, Final Fantasy, and a few, limited, other games.

This is a good point, actually Nintendo's approach is the best thing that happened to gaming for awhile. If the trend keep going each console would just upgrade graphics, sound and nothing else. That pattern has started to become rotten.

It's an upgrade from the Gamecube, and is a little more powerful than the XBox (which was last gen's powerhouse console).

i think the wii is the beginning of the next-next-gen. We are getting to the point where graphics can not get very much better. Just how you play the game. Make it more natural then 14 buttons on a controller.

Im pretty sure it had an upgrade over the GCN in everything pretty much, I think. So that in itself, in your opinion, would make it next gen.

Nothing is next-gen anymore, weve been in the seventh generation of gaming for months now. The terms next gen should be reserved for the PS4, Xbox 720 (if they name it that) and whatever the next Nintendo console is called. It is now current gen and all three consoles have outdated tech in them now......If anything PC is the only gaming platform that you can call next-gen.

No, the PC is still this gen until they bring out thenext generation GPUandCPU. As to answer the TC, the Wii is not this generation hardware, the motion sensing has been done beforeand thehardware is sorely lacking so it's more like agenerationof its own kind of like the Dreamcast in a way.

The Wii isn't next-gen. It's far from it, actually.

...As are the PS3 and the 360. They're all current gen, so it depends on how you define it.

But the Wii is current-gen, because it was released alongside the PS3. The graphics may not impress, but if the "next-generation" of video games is defined just by power and graphical capability in a console, I think that consoles that only aim to fit this description are last-last-gen. The Wii offers great graphics with fun gameplay at an affordable price, and with an excellent online network heading your way.

What more could you want in a console?

The Wii IS next gen, by the simple criteria of second word in that term - gen. It's the generational successor to the Gamecube and Nintendo's newest product model, just as the PS3 is the generational successor to the PS2 and is Sony's newest product model.

It may not be as powerful it's other next gen competitors (Xbox 360 and PS3), but that fact is irrelevant to defining "next gen". That is simply a discussion of comparative performance, where there will always be diffrences in each system operating in the same time frame which is what the generations are. The Xbox being more powerful than the PS2 did not make the latter "last gen", so the same principle applies here.

Performance comparisons have nothing to do with generations, only which is the most current model that replaces the previous one.

Calling the wii last gen because it's weaker is silly. It was released along with the other consoles and is in direct competition with them. Saying the wii is not next gen is like 3 boxers stepping into the ring for a free for all...except on of the boxers is very much under weight and then saying that boxer isn't really int he fight, he was in the previous one.

the wii is what i feel the definition of next gen should be i mean if i want great graphics then i ahve a 4700 dollar computer to use to get those graphics and trust me the graphics on my computer are unimaginably better than that of any console and my PC i mean even cheaper PC's often look better than any console games out. So what do i want? I want Innovative game play i want to do something i have never done before my main thing i am hoping the wii gets is more FPS's that are great and i think they will due to the success and control scheme which is just amazing on most existing shooters on the system.

The Wii is next-gen in that it's giving a taste of how bad hardware can get and how much you can rip off people-which is quite alot if I do say so myself.

anyway, since the wii is part of the generation which came after the previous generation, then indeed, it is the next generation... but now since it is part of the now, its current generation

Technically, all of the consoles out now are *current gen*, so I'd have to say "no". Unless Nintendo announces a WiiTwo, then that would be the "next-gen" Wii.

No Nintendo mentioned that there approach was not toward making a next gen console. They are focusing on the casual market this time around. People are buying Wii for the wrong reasons IMO. Its cheap and looks fun for the kiddies so lets get it for christmas. PASS
