I'm sure they could get by with less, but mroe ram is always better.  Even if there is a bottleneck somewhere else, it will only be a bottleneck for some developer at any given time.

If anything, removing ram as a potential bottleneck is a good thing.

Ram size can't bottleneck, i's a space that can be used whatever bandwidth to memory is

Of course RAM can be a bottleneck.

[QUOTE="AmazonTreeBoa"][QUOTE="TheWalkingGhost"] Yes. If the next MS system has more than 8 you can expect Hermits and Cows to making even more threads on this.XBoxgamer555

 Why would hermits care what's in the next microsoft console? I mean really, us hermits are sitting on the sidelines laughing at the stupidy coming from console gamers over their new consoles. I am loving all this DDR5 crap you console gamers are posting. Just goes to prove what people say about console gamers.....they are ignorant as fnck when it cones to tech and actually understanding it. But hell isn't that why they are on console instead of PC in the first place?

Understanding tech..:P. We have jobs too you know not related to tech and lots of other things in life to be engaged in. Do u think we cant install a game or update drivers. What else would be required besides checking the prices of pc parts and build a lousy pc its like lego. Yes we can check reviews of cards/cpu and choose the better alternative for our needs depending on budget. What else do hermits think they know. Downplaying something is easy I can do it too.

Just look at their stupidity over gddr5. Don't blame me because people say that about console gamers. I only look at the facts, which is this. Consoles gamers (More so cows than the rest) have been making an ass of themselves for the last week. If you don't like that they are making themselves look ignorant, then tell them to stop posting ignorant threads. But don't get upset with me for what they are doing just because I am noticing it and speak of it.

If the PS4 is expected to last a long time it needs as much ram as possible.

In this case sony is sharing the ram so they can get the chips cheaper. APU does not have its own video memory there for must use system memory thats why it has ddr5 ram. But this one they dont have to put to serperate chips on ps4 making it more expensive because the gpu will use dedicated ram and need another chip on the board.

I hope pc gets gddr5 ram soon. Cant wait to upgrade.

loosingENDS

They already do, have done for years atleast as far as the GPUs are concerned. Next for system RAM will be DDR4 this year.

PC is far behind, does not use unified ram and its main ram is slow

PS4 is the future, why do you think PS4 games look 10 generations better than Crysis 3 maxed ?

The problem is that the graphics are shown only in exlusives, since PC is holding PS4 multipltform games graphics way back

I was unaware of the existence of conclusive ingame videos demonstrating PS4s graphical capabilities...

I'm not sure. I'd expect to see a native transition to a fully-functional XMB, whilst still-playing plus a multitude of other potential features.

no not at all, maybe 16 is, or 12, like if MS came out with say 12GB of RAM it would be stupid and over kill. Right now 8 is perfect.

I've no trouble with future proofing. I'm sure 8 gigs will become obsolete sometime soon. If not, then better games.

one can never have too much ram. ram is like TV size...its either big enough or not big enough. its never too big :P. note...thats not really true. i know what the TC is getting at. a tactic used by some graphics card manufacturers to sell low end cards was to plonk loads of ram on them and try to fool people into to thinking it was better. so someone might think a low end gpu like a 7450 with 4GB of ram would be better than a 7850 with 2GB. its hard to say if it will be excessive at the moment. it depends on what other features sony want to have running along with the game. i think they will have a game recording feature for example which can be quite memory hungry. they may also want to have more flexible multitasking compared to current consoles. like running a browser at the same time as a game (and modern browsers are quite memory hungry) while also chatting to your mates in a separate video stream. i dont think anything has been said regarding how much ram will be available to games. sony may have to keep more of it away from devs if they want to make all these features available as standard. of course they may also be more flexible about the whole thing......we shall see. developers seem delighted though. mainly about the amount....they dont seem to care too much that its GDDR5. they just want more capacity. happy devs is usually a good sign. worst case scenario, assuming it is excessive and the GPU simply cant support the type of assets that would benefit from 8GB of ram the ram can still be used as bufers to either reduce load times or even remove them completly. so if devs really only need 4GB and the OS is taking up 2GB they can still use the spare 2GB to load in extra data in the background. combine that with hard drive caching and it would have great loading times.

I'm sure that PS4's memory is a single pool of shared memory, therefore 8GB makes sense since some of it will be used for the OS and other things while running games at the same time.

It has to share the RAM with the GPU and it's going to be doing video compression in the background among other tasks.

Wouldn't 4GBs be good enough? I'd imagine the PS4 would run into bottlenecking issues that would prevent it from being able to effectively utilize all of that RAM, when the rest of the PS4's specs are mid-range at best. It would be like purchasing a 680 GTX when your CPU only runs at 3.0GHz.

nekrothing

Next-gen PC is going to get GDDR5M SODIMMs** (slot compatible with DDR4) for system memory and GDDR6 for VRAM.

**JEDEC leaked the new laptop SODIMM standard. I would assume the desktop PC would get it's own GDDR5 DIMMs.

Fail thread.

Lets say a game needs 4GB of ram and PS4 only has 4GB. With the OS and maybe something else eating some of it up it wouldn't have 4 full GB for the game.

8GB is perfect. No problem with games that will require 5-6GB. Use what you need bro xD

That is what you think the system and OS can work more than fine with 2GB which even windows does which is much more bloated, and leave 6GB for video, the only thing preventing the PS4 for using 6GB is bandwidth, but i don't think it will be a problem, knowing how people use 16GB of memory on PC over a slow ass DDR3 bandwidth.

Right now it's not going to get taken advantage of until at least three years from now and good developer teams start on their second or maybe even third project for the console and in 5 years time who knows we might see devs cutting corners to fit their big ideas onto the console so I'd have to say the amount that of ram is adequate and right on the money but not excessive.

I feel people are still misunderstanding what he is saying. If you went and put 8GB of RAM in a GeForce 7800 (the card the PS3's GPU is based on) it's still going benchmark almost exactly same as a 512MB model on any game. Unless nvidia and ATI are putting way too little RAM in their current cards 8GB seems excessive (though not all of that is used on graphics) for a card with about the performance level of a 580. I would say about 1.5-2Gb is about right for a card with that performance which leaves 6-6.5GB for the OS and system RAM in the PS4. It seems excessive but then again every Sony console since the PS1 seems to have something strange about it's design that turns out to be a waste of their money in terms of real world performance. It wouldn't be a Sony console without something like this.

Strakha
I feel like your missing the point that it's also system ram. The video card isn't going to be exclusively using it. So all those background processes need to have have space in memory.
