For all that are too lazy to read; basically all shipments of PS3's in Europe are being seized because of a patent dispute between LG and Sony. The judge apparently thought there was enough merit it LG's case to stop the shipments. I don't know what feature is reportedly being infringed upon or how easily Sony can work around the reportedly infringed piece.
That sucks for Sony. Patents are always being brought up in courts, especially if they tie to a successful product. I dont know the exact details about this case but if Sony does come out on top LG will pay pretty hard. Im sure Sony will want to be compensated greatly for this ordeal. Guess we got to wait and see what happens.
So what does this mean? Anyone that has a PS3 now can't have it? And no more buying PS3's in Europe?
Well that is a little humbling. All companies are guilty of questionable practices. If those consoles are destroyed, a price drop this year will be very hard indeed for Sony. That's a lot of revenue destroyed.cainetao11Sony sued LG first. LG countersued....and won. Suing everyone left and right will eventually backfire.
Sony tried to sue LG for patent breach, as well, failed, and got sued by LG due to similar issues, and is, so far, at loss. If it's ruled that the confiscated consoles may be destroyed, Sony's in for one hefty financial setback, specially if it prevents them from selling PS3's in Europe.
This is turning out to be the worst generation for Sony.
there is a legal definition for picking a fight and then having it blow up in your face i think it's called... ROFLPWNED.
[QUOTE="110million"]Sony saved Nintendo from this sort of thing not long ago, it happenes to everyone. KC_Hokie?...no. Patent infringement doesn't 'happen to everyone'. These stories come up all the time, theres always some patent troll who patents a whole bunch of potentially unused ideas, waits for some other product to become popular, and sues them. Its **** like this that should be as illegal as the actual infringement.

Yeah, LG is just a troll, NOT a major company that has actually invented and patented things. Yeah.
[QUOTE="DarkStraberry"]Wait, will these confiscated PS3 still count in the sale numbers?KC_HokieSony counts 'shipped' so more than likely yes.
They can't count these as the retailers are going to want there money back since they can't sell them. Sony will have reimburse them and thus it won't count as sold. Remeber Sony is a public company and thus these units aren't actually sold to the retailer until they actually receive such product they bought. Sucks for Sony. I hope it doesn't happen in the US or otherwise I might just buy my 3rd PS3 just to be on the safe side.

Sony's counting system is internal and notorious for counting 'shipped' consoles. So the second they're 'shipped' they're counted as a PS3 out there in the market.[QUOTE="cainetao11"]Well that is a little humbling. All companies are guilty of questionable practices. May be a fee for online play very soon after that, LOL.$30+ million loss is a good estimate for a week and a half's worth of PS3s going into Europe. And I think PSN+ is only going to be free for so long. Less than one half of one percent of PS3 users have purchased it so far. MS on the other hand makes over a billion off Xbox Live subscriptions alone.
Wait so does this mean that Sony can never ever sell a PS3 ever again in europe? Or just for a certain amount of time?
[QUOTE="VensInferno"]Don't know yet. The order is more temporary until LG decides what they want to do. So much pettiness when it comes to big companies and patents, I wouldn't be surprised if those PS3's are destroyed for that reason :(.
Wait, will these confiscated PS3 still count in the sale numbers?DarkStraberry
This is the most system wars response in this thread :P.
This means for 10 days they cant sell any that have come into Europe. the ones on the store shelves are sellable. If the ones confiscated get destroyed, is the main hurtfull thing in the immediate future for Sony.Wait so does this mean that Sony can never ever sell a PS3 ever again in europe? So the second they're 'shipped' they're counted as a PS3 out there in the market. They then have to write them off to bad debt since they will have to refund these shipments. Since they are a public company they to be accurate in their reported numbers.

I have no idea what you are talking about sorry but if there was not some series merit to LG's claim then the judge would not have ruled for LG's favor. I mean seriously PS3 shipment would not have been halted and tens of thousands of PS3 already siezed because someone just trying to make a quick buck.

It would hurt their revenue but the 'shipped' numbers aren't going to change. Ever notice how Sony can accurately 'predict' the number of PS3s shipped every quarter down to thousands? It's not a coincidence. Doesn't actually matter what happens to them in the end regardless if they are stuck in a warehouse for six months or in this case potentially destroyed. They will all count towards Sonys 'shipped' figure.[QUOTE="cainetao11"][QUOTE="KC_Hokie"]100,000+ from what I've read. KC_HokieRough estimate would be 30 million dollar hit if all are destroyed. PSN+ isn't free and then you said that you can buy it. TYPOO :D
And of course MS makes more money cause nowadays more people play online. COD, Halo, almost every game nowadays have a MP option. Soo if PS became pay to play then more people would get it, know what I mean?

PSN is only going to be free for so long I meant due to the failure of PSN+. And MS makes over a billion dollars on Xbox Live subscriptions ALONE. Sony's executives see that and know what revenue they are losing. PSN+ was their attempt to attract some PS3 users but it's a total failure.[QUOTE="3rdbass"]

And Sony is notorious for counting anything that leaves the factory as 'shipped'. Again, compare the quarterly reports for any year against the 'predictions' and they are dead on. Being THAT accurate in their predictions for so many quarters is obviously due to their counting method. It's easy to produce 100,000 consoles at the factory then immediately count them as 'shipped'. I could guess the fourth quarter 'shipped' numbers with that system.KC_Hokie
They might count for a period but they will have to be backed out once shippments are delivered to the retailer. They can't get around this accounting for shippments since they are a publically traded company that is audited. In an audit shipped to warehouses counts as 'shipped'.3rdbass
