The only entries in Guerilla Games' Killzone series of video-games that I've played are "2" and Shadow Fall, the former of which was perhaps the single-most anticipated game for SONY's PlayStation 3 console (aside from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots). The now-infamous trailer for "2" that was revealed at 2005's e3 video-game conference filled me with excitement, as the incredibly realistic graphics and intense action that it displayed were unrivaled by every other title available at that time. The trailer polarized the gaming community; some fully expected the final product to look as good as the footage shown, while others doubted that any game could actually look so realistic. As for me, I was on the dividing line, because I didn't know what to expect. So, you can imagine how eager I was to pop the disc into my own PlayStation 3 and start it up after receiving it on its release date via mail.
I was quite satisfied with what I beheld; even though its textures weren't any more impressive than those of its contemporaries, it set a new standard for lighting, physics, particle effects, and realistic gun-models. Furthermore, its brilliant AI produced challenging yet very fun gameplay; to this day, I'd say that completing its campaign on "Elite" difficulty is the hardest but most satisfying task that I've ever taken upon myself in the realm of video-games. Guerilla Games had, in my opinion, produced a work of art that lived up to the hype generated throughout its development.
On the other hand, Shadow Fall was disappointing; its campaign was boring in terms of both its story and gameplay, and its multi-player was equally dull. It didn't even raise the bar graphically as its predecessor had done; it looked no better than the PS4's version of Battlefield 4 or the console's exclusive inFamous.
So, I have mixed feelings about a new Killzone game. If GG can produce something as fun and groundbreaking as "2," then I'm on board. Otherwise, I don't think that they should bother.
