On xbox live you can look at your friends friends. So I find peoples gamertags from my town then look at their friendlist then they have friends from their town then their friends have friends from their town. That makes it really easy to make alot of local friends from even a small town. Thats one reason I like xbox live better then psn. I got enough people now to have a local lan party. I met some guy that lives down the road from me and we both live in the boonies. I dont think psn can do that.

I don't think I'd like it if people I played with or against online could find out where I lived. Some people are weird

How would you know where the people live. I agree with you in preferring Xbox Live to PSN but I don't understand how you can tell where these people live?

The only local people i want to play with are my actual friends. I like the fact of having friends on PSN or steam that are from different cities, states, and countries, because there are no ties. I am friends with them strickly to play games with, if they get annoying, or i dont want to be their friend anymore i just have to hit the delete button on their name in my friends list. From my experience making local friends off of games can get a little weird, just not my way of making friends i guess.

It's even easier on the PC. I just browse the server list till I find one of my fav local servers. A few are just down the road from me.
