I find it funny how when COD4, Halo 3 and Gears was released NONE of those titles really brought "Innovation" to the table but yet they where praised as the second coming and the best games ever made, now in all the Killzone 2 previews they say its a good game but it lacks "innovation" Ok its a FPS war shooter!! What do people expect from this genre, for the main character to have special super powers to read the helghast's mind and use mind control?! I really think the term innovation is used way to often all of a sudden.. Call of duty 4 and Halo 3 while they are great games, brought NOTHING new to the table as far as innovation whatsoever!! now that Killzone 2 is down the road, Innovation all of a sudden becomes the #1 important thing, kind of ironic if you ask me and kind of hypocritical!

FPS war multiplayer shooters are not meant to innovate, they are meant to have great graphics, great shooting action and awesome multiplayer.. Noone cares for "innovation" when it comes to FPS multiplayer titles.. If you want innovation i suggest you hold out for Spore or Little big planet because FPS online shooters are not MEANT to be innovative. It seems like previewers will look for any excusse whatsoever to bring down killzone 2.

Again I just find it odd how when Gears,Halo 3 and COD4 came along that they where praised as the greatest games but yet all of a sudden so conveniently people are now bashing Killzone 2 for "lack of innovation" I mean really

Halo 3 brought Forge (completely new to consoles), an extensive file sharing ability, saved films etc. Im not saying this is innovation, but it is bringing something new to the console market. It all fits so well within Halo 3's UI that makes it so easy and great.

Killzone 2 doesnt need to innovate.. name one other console game with as good particle effects, body animations and overall presentation as good as killzone 2, the gameplay looks to hold up really good. Who cares about innovation, I buy FPS for multiplayer, great graphics and great gameplay.. If im lookin for innovation ill buy little big planet

You make it sound all fps games are generic when they aren't.

As for Killzone 2 people are being skeptical about it due to Guerrilla's track record. So far you can only base the game on it's graphics.

Some of those games had a few innovations or things that made them somewhat unique compared to other good shooters ....... but I do agree with you about people already knocking Killzone 2 because they see it as a "standard" affair or a "typical" shooter that does nothing new. While some games are going to get a pass on lack of innovation , Killzone 2 will not be one of those lucky games I promise you. It's standards are going to be insanely high (probably the highest of any shooter in history to date) ........ but as long as the gamers can comes to grips with those standards then things will be fine , they'll be able to enjoy a great game if they make a great game.

Its cover system is actually pretty unique.

Then there's the fact that every parts of your enemies body is susceptible to damage with visually stunning results.

The lighting all on its own contributes to gameplay more than nay-sayers would care to admit. Immersion adds to the gameplay's overall sum. Need we remind ourselves that immersion is exactly what makes GTA so great?

Halo 3 wasn't innovative? I beg to differ. It revolutionized file sharing, map editing, and saved films for consoles. COD4 sucked and brought nothing to the table and I never liked the game anyway. Gears of War was the first console game to feature such a deep cover system.

Killzone 2 is completely unproven. When it proves that it is more than just a pretty looking game, I will buy it.

Until then, its an unproven game from unproven developers with some really good looking promo videos.

Whether or not Halo 3 is innovative doesn't matter. Its gameplay seperated itself from other FPS. Halo plays nothing like CoD and its only major comparison is previous halos.

Killzone 2 on the otherhand, looks like the same old formula. I never played the game, it may have some suprises, but right now only the visuals are worth talking about.

While I agree that halo 3 isn't innovative, the key difference here is that halo is still distinctly halo, while killzone 2 looks like about 20 other games I've seen just this gen. Why would they still use the M14 in interplanetary warfare?

Halo prefected the console FPS controls for its time, took many elements and put together a great console shooter. 1 that stood tall against any PC shooter(notice the AAA scores for PC version)

Halo 2 destroyed every online console game when it came out. THe matchmaking, the interface, the gameplay, etc all of it set the standard for console online gaming, and the interface used by XBOX live today.

Halo 3- is the first and only console shooter to have a true online community(mainly because of the features) Forge and Theatre have created a ton of user generated map variations, videoclips, and screenshots .Which can be shown all over the community threw Bungie's file share, the favorites page in the game, and how well integrated Bungie.net has been used with it.

Halo as a franchise has set many standards for console shooter. Not so much the genre at all, but for consoles it has done alot.

COD 4, Halo 3, and Gears of War weren't innovators(Halo 3 maybe for consoles in termso f community gaming), but they atleast seperated themselves from the generic bad games.

COD 4 always had that COD feel to it

Halo 3 had the Halo feel to it

Gears of War had its own feel to it.

Killzone 2 looks impressive, but gameplay in general feels like its still Killzone. It doesn't seperate itself from the other shooter games.

The cover system looks terrible compared to Rainbow Six Vegas and Gears of War

The campaign looks explosive and intense from a visual standpoint, but the AI sucks, it seems like most of it is corridor shooting, and the objectives just seem bad.

Right now the game has VISUALS and thats it.

Crysis has visuals and a lengthy single player, and a great sandbox gameplay. With good AI.

Innovation in this genre has been done many times. SO I CARE ABOUT INNOVATION.

Half Life- the dawn of modern FPS gaming

Goldeney/Perfect Dark- the groundwork for console controls on an analogue

Halo2/Halo 3- I allready said what they did for consoles

Quake- First true online gaming community ever

Unreal- Fastest Shooter game ever.

Tribes- I believe this was the first shooter to use vehicles in a meaningful way.

I mean the list goes on. Medal of Honor(the Infinity Ward and Spielberg version),

There have been many fantastic FPS games that not only set standards in certain cases, but innovated.

Deus ex or System Shock 1- one of these is the first FPSRPG

Pretty much. Hell as long as KZ2 has tight gameplay and a good and fun MP it should be fine. COD4 had a crappy SP(IMHO)but it had a really fun MP and look how great it was accepted and it sure as hell wasn't innovative. Also gears wasn't innovative, but many people like the MP alot and it was also well accepted.

There is actually a lot you can do to be innovative in a shooter. Play some Halo and then COD4 and tell me they play in a similar fashion. They are extremely different because of larger differences, and smaller tweeks.

Well duh they dont feel the same. They have different settings. One a sci fi shooter with space aliens, space guns and the ability to jump high and do other sci fi stuff. While one is set in reality.

Halo 3 will be old in feb 09 but will still slap around KZ 2 like its nothing.

Exactly the #2 multiplayer game played on live. Doesnt mean Halo is anything special.. Infact Halo 3 is probably the least innovative game this gen.. even rainbow six vegas 2 has a cover system and ranks along with unlockables. All you can do in Halo 3 is keep ranking up

Most would see forge, theatre, and the other file sharing things as innovative. I think Halo 3 was great, it didn't really need to change much from the forumla of halo 2, it took the forumla and improved on it alot.

Killzone 2 however, is a sequel to a poor game, so they have to change it.

I don't understand... Gameplay wise??? It's a shooter, what else can you do in a FPS? A mini-game for picking your nose?

There is actually a lot you can do to be innovative in a shooter. Play some Halo and then COD4 and tell me they play in a similar fashion. They are extremely different because of larger differences, and smaller tweeks.

Well duh they dont feel the same. They have different settings. One a sci fi shooter with space aliens, space guns and the ability to jump high and do other sci fi stuff. While one is set in reality.

I'm just saying there is a lot you can do to differentiate your shooter from the pack.

Thankfully Battlefield Bad Company combines great action, awesome multiplayer, and innovation all into one amazing package.
