First of all you are suppose to be playing the game the right way. I'll start off by saying fix your brightness on your tv's some of you have it so high that you can see the monsters coming your not suppose to see them coming from far barely thats why your gun has a flash on it. Most of you also play th egame in the morning with people around you and thats a big mistake this is a horror game play it at night by yourself. And another mistake I see others do is not play the game in surround sound that makes a huge difference the game becomes ten times more scary when played in surround at night by yourself and your tv properly calibrated. Try it with all your horror games and watch the big difference.

I went out of my way to be scared by Dead Space, and it did not scare me, save for a jump scare once or twice.

It was definitely a creepy game that got a good jump or two out of me, but the majority of it's scares were just cheap "boo" moments, which eventually became way too predictable because of how often they were used. It had next to none of the slow-burn tension that all the greats of the genre used so effectively.

I guess you haven't played the silent hill series. Thos games are the only horror to ever creep the hell out of me and I've played every horror game you can think of but besides silent hill 1,2,3 dead space was the second horror game to achieve this because it sets the mood getting you ready to get scared by the boo moments which made the game scary.

After playing games like STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl and System Shock 2... games with incredibly predictable jump-scares, little to no atmosphere and very repetitive, sterile environments are hard to find scary.

A jump scare isn't a genuine scare. You're just shocked for a second or two and then proceed as normal.

Yes, that is what we call an EXCEPTION. If I SHOT MYSELF IN THE FOOT, it would mean that I have THWARTED MY OWN ARGUMENT. My whole argument regarding Dead Space is the following: IT IS NOT SCARY, SAVE FOR ONE OR TWO JUMP SCARES.

So really, who the hell shot themselves in the foot now?

Oh do I ever get what you mean. I have way too many friends who jack up their brightness settings on their tv's and games when playing. Bugs the hell out of me when I see a $2500 Plasma used and abused by the brightness factor.

Dead Space was more of an atmospheric thing, the horror of the game was the anticipation of something coming at you and even then it was a jumpy nervous thing not a genuine terror.

Dead space was not predictable only if you played it on your second run and of course all games are repetitive on your second run the enviroments were scary blood and body parts all over stuff destroyed and all the creepy sounds you hear around you making it even more tense.

Jesus Christ, do you understand the meaning of a nuanced argument? Not everything is black and white!

I said IT DID NOT SCARE ME EXCEPT (which means, "with the exception of") FOR ONE OR TWO JUMP SCARES. I also went out of my way to be frightened by the game -- turning off the lights, playing at night, surround sound, et cetera.

Your tv effects it even if the ingame brightness is at normal settings. Sometimes developers make brightness way too high and sometimes too dark making it unrealistic. I'm an artist and a audio/videophile so I usually set the picture to look realistically when it comes to brightness and lighting and 90% of the time it looks perfect for all my games whem my tv is set properly.

Within 20 minutes I was predicting exactly when another Necromorph (or several) was going to jump out at me. It also didn't help they used the ever-so-cliched tonal music build up to that point either.

Blood, "stuff destroyed" and "creepy sounds" don't necessarily make a game "scary." I got bored of Dead Space it was so predictable and repetitive. The foundation of the game was solid, but its execution left a lot to be desired.

I suggest playing STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl and re-evaluating what "scary" actually means. When you are instilled with so much dread that you refuse to even play the game for several weeks... it just goes to show how scary a game actually is, without using jump scares, walls covered in blood and (for the most part) large, "scary" monsters as a means of scaring the player (what made STALKER so scary was the feeling of utter helplessness among both human and mutated opponents... as soon as you became powerful enough to combat the larger and more powerful enemies, the game's scariness wore off, but still remained very atmospheric).

Dead Space relied far too much on traditional "horror" conventions and took FAR too many pages from the "Doom 3 Scares: How To" book.

Seriously I don't see how a slight change in brightness can have that effect. Its not that critical, it did a swing and a miss with the elements of what true horrifying games is. I simple did alot of jump boos and basicly became "Oh i am coming up to this, I wonder what will jump out or pop out."

I'm usually a weakling in horror games. I beat Dead Space, and it wasn't that scary (mostly jump moments, nothing actually scary). On the other hand, I still get scared even when watching someone else play Fatal Frame, Silent Hill, and sometimes Siren. I feel like the more slower-paced a game is, the better it builds tension.

Maybe a scare every now and then but for the most part it wasn't, probably because they give you too much ammo. In fact because of all the ammo your given I actually was looking for more necomorphs to spend it on.

No way Dead Space is scary , at least most people won't find it scary at all.Not saying I'm the tough guy , cause Siren:Blood Curse scared the hell outta me , and some parts of condemned 2 too.I mean dead space is a great game , I love it , but it failed to keep me tense y'know?Even silent hill on cell phone managed to do that , with almost no gameplay , so I think it's safe to say it was more action directioned than horror directioned , like RE 5 ( a shame in this case).

I'll admit i got jumped quite a few times playing the game. But like the rest of the guys said, those are cheap boo tactics. And after i've upgrade my guns to the max, it pretty much loses any form of being a horror game whatsoever. It actually makes me look forward to meeting enemies so i can test out my guns.

For me, horror and action just doesnt mix. One of them has to be compromised. Take Penumbra for example, you are pretty much helpless with only a glowstick. Its sneak or die. I've never felt so scared seeing an enemy in this game than in any other game i've ever played. In Dead Space i'll just be like, "ooh should i use my Flamethrower or Pulse Rifle?". Its just not scary anymore when you are capable of dispatching the enemies with ease.

I'd say it was more creepy than scary. I'd think it would be hard to find someone who didn't think the game was creepy.

The one thing that creeped me out more than anything was the music that played whenever a mutant was in the same room you were in. It's like you know it's somewhere, but you have to find it, then suddenly "GRAH!" it was behind you and it's already trying to rip your throat out.

It isn't "genuinely" scary, but it does get your adrenaline going at various parts of the game.
