Foxhound, I still do not understand how Dead Space is not atmospheric. I don't think the monsters are easy to kill, but that is probably because I played it on Hard my first go. It is what I do with most horror games. How is cliche not scary? And running does not always work for me. I remember running to a different room only to have the yellow tumor necromorphs enter the room through the vents. Are you saying that only unique equals scary now? I found Dead Space to be an all around scary game. It get's even better when you have voices from the game whispering in your ear, but people using their TV for their audio are **** out of luck for that effect.

To each his own I guess. I just found Dead Space to have an very intriguing story, bad execution and too much copying of Doom 3. I don't find gore, dark places and jump-out-at-you monsters to be scary. Dead Space is a decent game, but it definitely does not represent the survival/horror genre very well.

Not if it's done artificially via purposefully bad control. That's just aggravating, not scary.

I don't remember ever mentioning Silent Hill or Resident Evil to be honest... :?

If you found the game scary then consider yourself lucky, you got more out of the game than people who didn't find it scary, too bad for them.

I thought it was what you were implying. Which games did you have in mind?

Mostly STALKER and System Shock 2. While others have mentioned games like Penumbra. Games that are scary because they limit the player in terms of power, not control.

Your power is pretty limited on the harder difficulties in dead space.

When I play a game for the first time, I play it on the difficulty the game recommends me. It's then arguable if the blame is on me or the developer, if I don't get the experience I'm supposed to get. Dead Space is by no means a bad game, it's a great game in fact. It even does have a good atmosphere. It's just that STALKER's and System Shock's atmosphere are even better.
