As a console manufacturer,

What have Sony brought us other than over-priced shoddy hardware that breaks down and seldom few decent first party franchises? What innovations have they brought to the table?

They got lucky during the N64 era because Ninty dropped the ball and decided to go with cartridges, they rode on the coat-tails of their namebrand which was popular for reasons other than gaming, third parties carried them through the PS1 and PS2 era...

Memory cards, the usage of CDs and DVDs to consoles and also the ability to connect a HDD, I liked a lot of their third parties, PS3 doesn't break as much as 360 of course.

I agree somewhat that Sony got lucky and was the beneficiary of some different circumstances, but honestly, you don't fluke your way to selling over 100 million consoles. When you accomplish something like that, you're doing SOMETHING right.

You may count out the CDs but what? Are you trying to say that because of that those were bad consoles? Like the Wii is all innovative and stuff but that doesn't make it better by default and I have yet to see the games that are actually proving to  show how good it is.

Sony may have not invented a lot of stuff they had on their consoles like dual analog sticks and such but that doesn't mean it didn't work well, in fact it worked very well and made PS1/2 some of the best cnsoles.

no, the ps1 and ps2 were gigantically successful because the people who played them loved them and their games. this is why the last 2 gens are commonly known as the "playstation era".

Honestly! You need to find more things to do with your day. I mean, you do realize that you're complaining about a company which has nothing to do with you as an individual and whatever you say isn't going to change anything.....right?

ummm did anyone notice the library of games on ps1 and ps2. that didnt happen by accident. that's not a fluke. The gamecube flopped because of a lack of such a strong library of games. The 360 right now is in a good position because it's got lots of different kinds of games. But it should be selling a lot more, a helluva a lot more, the craptastic wii will have caught up in no time. If sony manage to pull of a miracle (price drop) then everything can change. imo the really great games are still coming out on sony's system. My favourite games of last gen: Mgs FF, shadow of colosussus will have new iterations on the ps3 with new Ips' like heavenly sword, new Jak and daxter, Kingdom hearts gran turismo

Lol, wow...

WHAT HAS MS DONE?

made an integrated online... even though sega did onine first... oh and payed for there exclusives because they cant get them any other way... (that'l be great for the industry...(setting a precident to make ninty/sony pay out the *** for 3rd pt exclusives) thats for sure)

What has Nintendo done?

changed how controllers are made.... and.. made a bunch of franchises 20 years ago that they still use (not saying thats bad... or that they make the new ones bad), helped make video games mainstream and helped bring it back from a crash

What did Sega do?

um...  DC rocked, with vmu's and online, and a great library considering it's time span... SNES vs. Genisis was pretty much the same thing though...

What has sony done?

Probably about doubled the ammount of people playing video games (less than 100 mil snes + genisis were sold, more than 105 million ps1's were sold and made them more mainstream and mature in the process, made the first viable disc-drive system, and helped console FPS alot with dual analog sticks.

Sony has done  more for the industry than MS or Sega, and arguably the same (though different) or more thing than nintendo... it's hardly a fluke...

anyone who denies that sony absolutely dominated that last 2 gens or says that it was a fluke is an obvious fanboy in denial. and just cause the ps3 isnt as hot as its previous iterations right after launch doesnt mean that it wont reach that level in the coming years. the main difference between this generation and the last 2 is that MS and Nintendo have finally brought their game up to be competative, and thats what makes this gen more exciting.

They won they last 2 generationts because they know what they doing.

They might have had a slow start but remeber slow and steady wins they race.

They Wii is a gimmick, give it 2 more years and it'll be dead last.

Even for PS1 Sony had some amazingly good selling first-party titles and the whole system was a really brilliant effort on the part of their marketing and development.

PS2 would have been considerably better if they had made development for it considerably easier..it really shows in some of the first-gen titles how difficult it was.

PS3 is being hurt right now only by the lack of a mass-market pricepoint if and when it hits that you can expect sales to skyrocket and of course when the bigger titles release and during the christmas season.

so wait sony sucks because the majority of there great library was third party. wow. thats retarted im sorry but nintendo is a great 1st party, but the amazing 3rd party support for sony was way better, and offered more quality games versus just nintendo 1st party.

yes nintendo screwed themselves by alienating the 3rd parties, they made many mistakes that sony did not. but sonys success was not just a byproduct or result of nintendos screw ups. the playstations were a lot diiferent than the nintendo consoles that had come out so far, as were the games.

Sony's "fluke" was they they happened to be out at the right time each generation for that one special game.  For the PS1, it was FF7, and for the PS2, it was GTA3.

But Sony doesn't really have that this time around.

As a console manufacturer,

What have Sony brought us other than over-priced shoddy hardware that breaks down and seldom few decent first party franchises? What innovations have they brought to the table?

They got lucky during the N64 era because Ninty dropped the ball and decided to go with cartridges, they rode on the coat-tails of their namebrand which was popular for reasons other than gaming, third parties carried them through the PS1 and PS2 era...

and now that their good luck ran out what are they left with?

A console that's in dead last that's what.

jedigemini

you can say the same thing about Nintendo!  Nintendo got really, really lucky when they got into video games.  The video-game industry was about to crash and burn when Nintendo got lucky with Miyamoto's brainchild (Mario) and scored bigtime.  However, while it was an awesome game, it was elevated to godly status since it happened to NOT be a rehash, not have "new" versions of the same levels and all of the other staples of the then-flailing industry.  Mario is the only reason Nintendo prospered.  The ONLY ONE.
Now, back to your comment... can you say disgruntled fanboy?  First off, your comment about "few decent first party franchises"... let's have a comparison between Sony and Nintendo first party franchises:
Sony
Gran TurismoGod of WarJakSOCOMTwisted MetalKillzoneHot Shots GolfSyphon FilterWipeoutRatchet and ClankResistanceMotorstorm

That's 12 franchises in total, not counting handheld games and spinoffs.
Nintendo
MetroidMarioSuper Smash Bros.PikminStar FoxOdamaMother (Earthbound)ZeldaWars series (advance wars, batallion wars, etc.)KirbyPokemonDonkey Kong
That's 12 in total, not counting spinoffs.

If I've missed any from one of the categories feel free to add, but so far it apears that the two are equal in franchises.

Now, on your other comment... "No innovation."  Well, to the best of my knowledge, there has never been anything in the console world that equated to an eyetoy prior to its existence, nor was there ever and integration of multimedia features in consoles prior to the playstation brand (watching movies, being able to listen to music, etc).  These are significant considering that now one of the major competitors (Microsoft) has ripped off these features for their own use (Live camera and 360 multimedia features).

And finally, about the third party thing... the reason they turned to Sony was because your cherished company Nintendo was acting like a buffoon.  Nintendo tossed third parties to the wayside and dismissed them as unimportant.  How wrong of a decision that turned out to be...

Sony made some incredibly smart decisions when they entered the console arena, unlike their buddies Nintendo.  They offered an alternative to the N64 that allowed games to made on ultra-cheap optical discs, which also held up to more 50x more data than an N64 cart.  Nintendo tried to keep third parties under their thumb with their insane licensing policies, while Sony knew how to actually support third parties rather than competiting with them.

Yea just like Michael Jordan's career was a fluke as well. I mean back then players such as dwane wayde, lebron james and kobe bryant where as good as they where know and if they where playing when Jordan was playing, Jordan would have lost. In other words Michael Jordan's whole succesfull career was a fluke... As ridicolous as my theory sounds, yours sounds just as ridicolous and thats what you sound like

They Wii is a gimmick, give it 2 more years and it'll be dead last.

Ghetto_Kid

Do you know how fast the Wii is selling? according to vgacharts and nextgenwars it's already close to 6 million sold. about half of what the 360 sold in 16months. double the amount of what the PS3 has sold. in 4 months! If you give the Wii 2 more years at this rate, it wont matter if they die down, they will have enough market share that the PS3 and 360 will be trying to catch up the 2/3 remaining years.

Good thing about the Wii is, its going after kids, casual gamers, and old people. That's fine, because hardcore gamers want graphics not gamecube games. So in a sense the Wii isnt important since it wont steal exclusives away.

The PSX was brilliant. Sony came in with an Adult theme additude, saying here's realistic graphics (at the time), violence, gore, action based games and horror. This is a mature console with discs. They gathered up all the 3rd party and beat out Nintendo when it was down. The next gen they won easily again because Sega has always been a joke always getting its ass kicked and create new consoles waay too soon, giving up on itself. So it was simple. Mature games vs Cartoon games. Sony dominated even more.. but before the war was over here comes money hungry Microsoft that everyone despised with a bulky console, no Japanese support and so on. offering no challenge to Sony.

This gen, Microsoft came up with an amazing strat to steal fans away from Sony buy buying exclusives, coming out a year eariler, and so on. And now Sony is making Nintendo like mistakes of the past. its safe to say this is the first war Sony has ever faced that's challenging. And the irony if Microsoft gaining, Sony losing. is that Nintendo, the one that everyone always counted out and survived 2 gens coming in last living off of its handhelds is becoming #1 soon lol.
