As a console manufacturer,

What have Sony brought us other than over-priced shoddy hardware that breaks down and seldom few decent first party franchises? What innovations have they brought to the table?

They got lucky during the N64 era because Ninty dropped the ball and decided to go with cartridges, they rode on the coat-tails of their namebrand which was popular for reasons other than gaming, third parties carried them through the PS1 and PS2 era...

and now that their good luck ran out what are they left with?

A console that's in dead last that's what.

The SNes sold 49,000,000

The N64 sold 32,000,000

The PS1 sold 100,000,000

The GC sold 23,000,000

The PS2 sold 110,000,000

I hardly call it luck my friend. It's pretty obvious that Nintendo was not targetting a broad mature audience. Namely thee other 50-60 million gamers and their still ignoring me and hundreds of my friends. But thats ok we have MS and good old fashion Sony to turn 2 /thread

Watch them "fluke" their way to number 1 again.

You can make any excuse as to why the PS1/PS2 came number 1 but the reality is that they succeeded because of their wide variety of standout titles and PS3 is heading that way whether or not people accept that idea.

speaking of crappy hardware............ever heard of the 360??? Talk about over priced and crap hardware!!

Interested in a last gen consol that plays dvd's, crashes, freezes, and can't read disc's, lots of sci-fi games, no next gen drive built in, enjoy looking at red lights appear on ur gaming consol, well ms released the 180 over a year ago and now their 360 is going to be released soon. if u like all these features invest over $400 in an xbox180/360 today. LMAO

The PSX was awesome.  The PS2 was awesome.  Hopefully the PS3 will be awesome.  I'm giving it time.  I have yet to purchase a next gen console and I'm really going to think this through before I drop upwards of $400-$600 on a system.  Unlike the kids who freaked out when Gears of War came out and bought a 360.

What universe did you live in, PSone, PS2 and PS3 are the most solid lasting consoles around, I never had to wait weeks(like I did on my 360) for new games to actualy work, I never had stress(like I had on my 360) if I would be able to save after an epic battle, I never had to play the 1st half of a basketball game more than once on my PS3(my 360 never makes it to half time). Sony is THE power-console maker, and will remain THE power-console maker. The PS3 just needs a little time before all the gamers who are on their 2nd or 3rd 360 will get sick of the red ring of death.

Quite ironic that Nintendo was the one that caused that 'fluke', eh? If they hadn't shafted Sony so badly, the PS1 would've been mainly a Nintendo console, and they'd probably still be the undisputed reigning champions in the gaming market. Personally, much though Nintendo is overall a great company, I think they really deserved that metaphorical kick in the pants. And to say that Sony never did anything for the gaming masses is just stupid. Heck, they just about MADE it 'masses', at least much moreso than before they were a factor.

But now, when it all comes down to it, though MS currently has the numbers advantage, it's anyone's guess what happens next. Sony ****ed up big time with the PS3 PR/launch. I hope that it's pretty much a close 'race' from now on, nothing like fierce competition to encourage companies to provide overall better quality products.
