What games do you think influenced Tomb Raider Reboot/Remake and Rise of the Tomb Raider?

I think I'm halfway Tomb Raider Reboot/Remake and it felt quite different from Tomb Raider: Underworld and PSP Anniversary that I've tried way, way back.

Are the upgrades/crafting considered as RPG elements?

I bet the old Tomb Raider games have some influence in the reboot.

Do you think they should've kept the older art style(s)? I prefer the new, more realistic one but I wanna know what others think.

Uncharted without a doubt.

\Which is a shame because we already have an Uncharted series, I'd rather have tomb raider back.

Uncharted obviously. I'd of course rank Uncharted higher because it's multiplayer was worth playing.

Obviously Uncharted is right there with setting and presentation... But the game that most echoed the Tomb Raider reboot to me was Arkham asylum. Outside of the combat being slightly different, though very satisfying... I'd argue light-years more satisfying than Uncharted, the exploration and connection to the locals reminded me of playing Arkham asylum.

@TheEroica: Interesting. Was it also because of the rope mechanics/traversal?

I'd say Uncharted, and the modern action/adventure games in general influenced Tomb Raider reboot. I haven't played RotTR so I cant say other than the first TR.

Its funny because I remember before the TR reboot even happened, magazines were doing articles on how the first lady of gaming has fallen off her pedestal. People weren't into Tomb Raider games as much anymore. What did people expect to happen? Devs and publishers to ignore the trends in the market?

The hunting and the cross bow , but every game put a fricking cross bow /Crisis 3 , Far Cry 3 and this game/.

I guess you can put all UBI games with the collectibles and the pointless hunting like Far Cry 3 and the "open" island.

I see. Yeah. That reminded me.. did C3 popularize the "uber bow"? Collect, Shock, Pierce, Explosive, Air Burst, Draw Weight; pin.. "what a package bow!".. then there was Evil Within :D

Oh.. I see. Yeah so those games had pointless hunting too? Never really played them.

Thanks.

Well, a high profile Sony developer/director left Sony to go help create Tomb Raider Reboot and now he's back at Sony working on the newest God of War. He directed God of War 2.

Furthermore, it's obvious that Uncharted 2/3 was a huge influence on the design of the game.

Nah, I like the direction they moved towards and instead maybe have some nods to the previous games design. Like it would be pretty cool if we saw Lara sporting her sunglasses from Tomb Raider III or something.

Tomb Raider (originals), Indiana Jones, Prince of Persia (Sands of Time and Warrior Within), Assassin's Creed, Uncharted to name a notable few.

As others are stating, Uncharted is a heavy influence. That's probably why I think the reboot is the best in the series. Uncharted is my favorite series.

Sorry for confusing you. I'm actually also confused.

I played Skyrim a lot.. well most of the time messing with mods but maybe that was 2 years ago. I don't remember much about bows and hunting. Yikes my memory's terrible. I spent at least 200 hours on the game. I vaguely remember having a catman companion and doing some boss fight dragon on a very high mountain. Can't believe I can't remember much about my gameplay moments in Skyrim :(

I did not know that.

How do these things go? Are they freelancers just jumping back and forth studios? Sorry I'm really dumb when it comes to actual work.

How was Cary Barlog a Sony developer/director when he worked at other companies before Sony? It's not like Sony owned him. See that's what I hate about cows they are a cult that gives credit to everything Sony and their world revolves around Sony.

If Cory Barlog has left Sony then he is no longer a Sony developer or now since he came from Crystal Dynamic, would you call GoW 4 director the high profile Square Enix developer? Cows make me sick to the stomach.

@zeeshanhaider: And Corinne Yu from Microsoft's 343 industries jumped ships to Naughty Dog... Things like that are happening every day - it's nothing special.

Or Forza sound guy joined Polyphony now.

Oh I see, so as per SolidTy a Microsoft dev joined Naughty Duds to help them with x86 like architecture and DirectX 11 features. Didn't know it was MS all along that was behind the UC4 graphics. :P

Obviously Uncharted. It's sad because with Underworld the series was finally going into a more adventure focused direction leaving mostly the shooting aside and the platforming mostly as a way to explore the world, and also ignoring QTE.

Hopefully they will change and upgrade a lot of things in Rise of the Tomb Raider.

@jg4xchamp: lol... I stand by it. Not suggesting that tomb raider carries the same weighty presence in its local than asylum does, but all throughout that game I felt like each new area was moving me along as Batman did... Collect a few things, plan a few surprise attacks, find a secret or two, then move along to the next area to look at.

It's complete wank though.

Arkham Asylum does Metroid in a manner that comes across as they actually get it.

Tomb Raider has these artificial backtracking segments that make the back tracking more annoying and cumbersome, where as things like Metroid, Dark Souls, and Asylum not only come off logical, but usually make the back tracking itself a quicker and expedient path. That and the riddles>those shit barrel tombs found in Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider has like the superifical version of 'exploration", sure you can explore, but it's still the Uncharted brand of exploration. Uncharted might be a closet, Tomb Raider is more of a hallway. Asylum? Had actual meaningful exploration that added to the setting, kept you immersed, and was tightly designed with gameplay and player psychology in mind.

Personally Tomb Raider gets way too much credit for things it actually doesn't do all that well. Exploration being a big fucking one, it's a fraud in that department.

@jg4xchamp: yeah, I mean all articulate points. Tomb raider certainly doesn't make you feel meaningfully connected to its world and the backtracking can grow long in the tooth. All legitimate grievances... I think what caught me off guard when I played the game was that in my mind I was expecting Uncharted.... Ie, extremely narrow "closet" type game. Realizing it was more open made me feel differently about it... I'm not dumb enough to say it doesn't have an Uncharted vibe to it, and it certainly isn't the best Metroidvania style game out there... More paint by numbers.

Still, I enjoyed the game. The combat was more satisfying than I thought it would be.

I think where the exploration and puzzle is just as bad as uncharted, they just made it "bigger" to fool people, the combat, the core basic, moment to moment combat is where they do something actually better than Uncharted. Besides the mechanics being better (and not being sticky cover), the game also uses that lite-stealth for more predator styled action sequences....which are now super common in third person shooters, because that genre is creatively bankrupt. Anyway: those predatory styled action sequences work for that game as it allows you to be a bit more expressive with your arsenal.

When it tries to be bombastic and set piece heavy, it's like why would I want to play lesser Uncharted or Modern Warfare, because contrary to the hatewagon, those games actually do that stuff relatively well.

Rise of the Tomb Raider should have less set pieces, more predator styled stuff, and actually fixes the tombs and metroid structure, maybe even adds the survival elements that they hinted at with the hunting in the first game. Talk about a totally pointless fucking mechanic.

It's prior games, Uncharted, Gears Of War. Basically everything Uncharted was influenced by probably. But it did go out of it's way to try and expand on the formula in their own way.

@Salt_The_Fries: You are saying redundant things I already know and spoke about in other threads regarding talent. There is a difference though. I was speaking of a high profile dev that got promoted to a game director with Sony, left to work on the last TR, and now is back with Sony in a game director position again. That's more peculiar.

Those you are mentioning didn't return to their former positions with their former companies nor are they high profile game directors. Yes, devs bounce around all the time which is normal. That other butthurt super sour lembot had obvious mental issues, and I don't bother with those kids anymore, but I did respond to you because you were respectful and I wanted to make the distinction.

Anyways, this is way overblown by a single xbot lembo because at this point in history, some x-fanbots are feeling some sort of super passion suddenly for the Tomb Raider franchise since Rise of the TR is a timed exclusive, so they will now defend the TR series as if it's a 1st party game. I remember a few years ago the TR series wasn't defended by radical fanboys, just regular TR fans. It's pretty sad and disturbing to see such vitriol because they found out Rise of the TR is coming to PC and PS4. Nothing I said was inaccurate and shouldn't have caused so much grief, butthurt, and salty tears. I think deep down, some of these kids are just angry at themselves.

If you look above at the comments, you will see at least two users that REFUSED to answer the Topic Creator's question (the truth hurts regarding Uncharted being a huge influence in the modern TR games) and instead the possibly upset users decide to go off topic and respond to other users. It's not like that fanbot (zeeshan) responded to the question and then quoted users, no his only interest was trolling users from the get go, which is also his modus operandi in other threads. That's a huge clue as to his juvenile state of mind. I would suggest he save the vitriol for trolls like himself. How do you feel about this Topic?

EDIT: While I'm amused by that insane troll, I'm not going to give him the time of day. Anyone can get on Gamespot, post ad hominems and act looney, but ultimately a troll is a troll. This kid doesn't have any games, machines, pictures, nor any game IDs to be worth my time. You on the other hand are on my Xbox Live Friends list, which is why I give you the time of day. Also, you may have differing opinions, but usually you are respectful.

The new RoTR (real time crafting, healing) kinda reminds me of TLoU (TPPerspective). I do vaguely remember L4D doing something like that tho (FPS).

Uncharted and Far Cry 3.

ROTR looks to have influence from TLOU. Naughty Dog must be very flattered at Crystal Dynamics admiration of their skills.

Yeah, the usual cow stance, sine they don't like Sony/cows they must be Lems. The funny thing is I have never owned a single Microsoft console in my life neither I play or fan of any of their exclusives, hell I probably wouldn't even know about Master Chief (that he is a lead character of Halo) if I haven't come to SW. Remain butthurt over that fact that I only go after zealous cows after I found how much of a cult they are. But hey, since he hate cows, he must be a lem.

And no, Cory Barlog was not a Sony dev that Sony leased him to Crystal Dynamics. You are just butthurt that many users found TR to actually expand on the forumla that Uncharted is using and innovated within that sphere. Yeah, I know TR was heavily inspired by UC. I already mentioned these things before just not in this particular thread. Oh and don't you dare try to argue that you are not butthurt over the fact that TR reboot received some of the praise for which UC always get slammed for by users. I could list tens of examples where you tried to downplay it by comparing it UC's MC score to make you feel comfortable.

Oh and how would you like this interpretation that since Cory Barlog is back with Sony it was because that since Stig shit the bed and Papy last GoW flopped so Sony begged the high profile Square Enix dev to come back to help them with GoW. How about that? I know that makes you twisted in your panties because of your Sony bias.

Oh wait, forget CD or SSM, wasn't a Crytek dev joined Naughty Duds before the production of TLOU that lready was working on a similar idea and game before Crytek cancelled it? Oh now, I get it it was a high profile Crytek dev that helped Naughty Duds to release a blockbuter game.

INB4 you post a pic of all your consoles let me tell you that proves jackshit. NyaDC also owns a PS4 along with its exclusives yet he is biased towards MS.

But hey, but I'm a lembot because I don't bow to Sony every now and then and like to expose cows like you who worship corporations.

ITT: A lot of super off topic butthurt about my mere existence due to my on topic post about TR, lol.

A few kind of crazy non-legit fakeboys/alt accounts with unnecessary vitriol, very peculiar stalker-like interest, incredibly serious opinions about plastic, and if I'm being honest what seems to be mental issues. I suppose I should feel so lucky to see these unknown accounts craving attention from a longtime SW Vet and proven legit user (Steam ID, Gamerscore, NNID, PSN IDs, playing with tons of Gamespotters online across machines over the years, and Pictures of machines and various games). Unlike other picture hounds, I have the longtime gamerscore, Steam, Blizzard, and PSN IDs that prove I play my games with 100,000 Gamerscore for starters.

RL Psych counseling may be required for a few of these young pups.

I have a couple pictures on the HDD so I guess there is no harm there, but I'm not taking new pictures unless these kids stop and comply with my own requirements to prove these wacky dudes are even legit users.

Right now, these alt spam accounts must understand that we aren't on equal footing, which is not only quite obvious, but also means I don't care about their opinions until they prove their worth. They are just angry fakeboys bent out of shape as far as I'm concerned and most likely children with nothing else going on in their life.

---

EDIT: The fankid troll with an illegitimate account not only has a lot of salt but he desperately seeks attention! I haven't quoted that poor sucka once in the thread. I don't respond to nutty completely unproven trolls. Prove you have some real videogames or game IDs and especially prove you are not some insane troll with a mental deficiency or begone.

Ah I knew this clown would simple post a pic and will not address anything that I have said. Funny this idiot like to school others on how to make arguments with 100 pages of essays yet he avoided all of the questions I posted and instead addressed the question raised by some other user and trying to pin it on me as I have asked for a proof.

Your pic proves nothing. You are a Sony drone and yes, I have a gift for identifying cult cows like you.

Nothing to see here that since you are now exposed, you again trying to play the card cows used to always play with me of having alt accounts. Yes, even I would like to know what a veteran SW user think about me and you. Mods can vouch for me that I have no alt accounts here.

Let's do a postmortem of your posting history and mine. Let's see if I ever defended MS or Xbox brand ever in any shape or form and let me bring up your Sony's ass kissing which you try to hide by posting these pictures.

I know this idiot who called me a fanbot won't have guts to revert back. His next response most probably would be like all cows is calling a me a lem hiding behind a PC since I outright rejected his lembot accusation.

a game that inspired a game and that game then inspired a reboot of the first game. pretty simple and obvious answer

Saw someone post it was more from Indiana Jones and Gears.

I remember one YT comment mentioning something like "does Nathan backflip a lot, dual wield handguns, hard lock ons and kill lots of wolves?"

Wonder if those have a heavier merit.
