I'm not sure - since I'm an avid reader when it comes to the Halo universe, I'm interested to see where Halo Wars goes in terms of storytelling. Afterall, the Fall of Reach is, by far, the best book I've ever read - so I'm hoping some elements of the story will make it in Halo Wars.Stevo_the_gamer
ehhhh....
Start reading more, please.
But to answer the question, yes, it seems MGS4 is going to be an amazing story. But depending on how well it's presented, I'd say StarCraft 2 can really wow some people, that is, assuming it releases this year. :(

You need to read Crime and Punishment. THAT is a great book.

Reading it right now for the AP exam next week. Incredible book, as good as War and Peace.
Shenmue IIIkrunkfu2
If we actually get that game, it will be my game of the year.
If Shenmue III doesn't come out (which I doubt it will), I'll go with either Too Human, Fallout 3, or Lost Odyssey. I played MGS2 and was not impressed (bored actually), so MGS4 isn't a contender for me.

Meh. Didn't really like WaP. Character development was too contrived; it was not gradual at all-nothing but a half-dozen grand epiphanies of the meaning of life.

I wouldn't say that, I've read it more than 4 times now, and I still haven't grasped everything, which is exactly why I loved it; it resonated with me.
Well, we're getting off topic, if any game is ever going to approach the level of narrative achieved in those books...

Deus Ex was the closest I've ever seen, and even that was closer to something by Crichton than by Dostoevsky in terms of depth...
Well, fortunately for every dev who has storytelling ambitions Gray Matter was delayed till 2009 :)
Anyway I;m only half way through Overclocked, but it's strong contender, it's the kind of mature story, with deep, psychologicaly realistic characters that just doesn't apear in games anywmore.
Aside from that Mata Hari and Nikopol
for comedy Vampyre Story > All
:)

See, the way I always looked at Deus Ex is that the story itself was great but not magnificent. It's the way they presented it that made all the difference. The way they made location and exploration part of the storytelling was ingenious, just like System Shock 2.

The story of Crime and Punishment is not particularly stellar either (indeed, it can be argued that it is well-nigh non-existent), yet Dostoevsky crafted a masterpiece by depicting the world of the novel, not just the novel itself.

And I don't disagree with that. But that doesn't change my opinion of the story in Deus Ex: wouldn't have been nearly as awesome were it not for the brilliant game designers who knew how to tell a story.

Speaking of that book, I heard it was so good and I tried it but the beginning was so incredibly slow, i couldnt force myself to continue with it. I quit on that after a while and started on Notes from the Underground and had the same problem. Then I tried The Brothers Karamazov and it was much better i got deeper into that one, but still I really want to read the others its just so painful to bear through the beginning.

It doesn't change my opinion of either either; I love both.
Virtually every story that will be told in the future has already been told. The way a story sets itself apart is in how it is told.
Nah, that's oversimplification. There still are stories that haven't been told and new ideas that weren't done befor, what's more with the depth the plot in novels has they're like snowflakes, no two are exactly the sameVirtually every story that will be told in the future has already been told.

No two snowflakes are exactly the same, but all have six primary protrusions. Stories can be extremely different from one another, but, at their essentials, they are the same. The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Star Wars: Episode 6 are vastly different, but they are both stories of a quest to save the world/universe.

I disagree about that, those aren't stories. You're talking about basic premises. Story is something much more, it's not just the general premise, it;s also characters, settings, dialogues and the whole plot.
The basic premises have all been done, the stories? Nothing further from truth.
It's like saying the science is over, as everything has already been discovered and invented. Because we have sciences that cover everything and now we just improve.

At their fundamentals, they are the same, IMO.
It's all a matter of perspective, really.
And, no matter what perspective you're looking from, Crime and Punishment and Deus Ex are amazing :)

How so? The StarWars and LOTR stories are hardly anything like eachother, despite the basic "save the world " premise

On that I can agree :)
Spore, because it's the story of the rise of your own personal species into an empire. You control the way that story goes down.
In my case, it'll be the story of some tentacled velociraptor people who build flying submarines as their primary military vehicle.
Guns of the Patriots. This is more fact then opinion.NAPK1NSquite right.
MGS4 is the front-runner. If any game turns out to have a better story, it will have been an *upset*.
Any year that sees a legit MGS game is a year MGS is expected to have the best story.
Unless that year also has a Final Fantasy game.
So yea...MGS4 until some game proves us otherwise.
Too Human.
Sorry but every game that Silicon Knights has produced has had an amazing story (or begins an amazing story such as with the Kain series) that devs and audiences alike venerate.
50 Cent: Blood on the Sandtmatte
This is actually my most ANTICIPATED story, cuz i wanna know how the devs are gonna rationalize wats going on in the game...should be a treat
But in all honesty...whats going to be the best story of '08? How about the game series that always has the best story on the year it is released...MGS4!

That's the point. I'm not going to argue that a tapeworm and an elephant are the same, but they are both still animals. Of that there is no doubt. Two stories may be vastly different in how they are presented, but they are still, at their essentials, the same.
It doesn't really matter though. As I said, it's all perspective, and perspective tends to not mean much.
