First off....I don't like Rich. Apologies for posting one of his videos but there can't be too much he can be wrong about in this story, so....

Long story short some guy spent $6000+ on trying to get a special female character in this game and when other ppl who played this game got wind of that They got pissed...so the company apologized an d gave THE OTHER players a virtual currency refund.

i dont get this.

Its a F2P game...the guy can spend as much of HIS money he wants to and that was the point of the promotion they held to get ppl to spend money on trying to get this character.

What exactly do they hav to apologize for?

I mean I think it's stupid to spend that much on that shit....especially that much, but it's his money and the point of F2P games are in game purchases...it's the point of the special event that went on and it's the basis of the whole thing.

If anything, I'm guessing it's a social issue with both men and women in Japan. A lot of women prefer having careers over settling down and start a family, and the men are just becoming childish and then look for alternatives to fill in the women-less gap with Anime.

Free to play games have a delicate balance. You don't want to piss off your "whales" because they pretty much fund the game for those who don't pay or pay very little.

But you also don't want to piss off your free players because they provide content for the "whales". Which makes them spend ludicrous amounts.

If one side thinks its unbalanced for the other, they will realise they are wasting their time and leave so I get why they apologised.

Can't my head round this, some guy spend $6k on trying to unlock a character and the company gives other people refunds?

Can this the character unique to one person? Meaning it was a pay to win competition, i.e. an auction where the seller keeps everyone's bids. If that's the case and it wasn't advertised as such then yeah they should refund everyone but the final buyer.

If it's not a unique character then what does it matter what someone spends on trying to unlock it for themselves, it's their money.

@mr_huggles_dog You didn't post a video or link, not sure why you're apologising.

@GarGx1: my internet was acting up last night I'll find the video and post it soon.

But no it's not a unique character. It's just a character you spend virtual currency for like a gem or some shit that gives you a drop chance of getting this character.

So the guy spent $6000 got like 3000 gems and eventually got the drop.

Then ppl bitched.

There must be more to the story because there's no reason for them to refund anything that I can see...

It's his own money to spend. I personally don't care who/what/how you'll spend your money and remember, life is too short.

No game in the planet would drive me to waste 6000 bucks! We should go congratulate that developer for finding the world's dumbest consumer.

Maybe...
He was of course being influenced by promotion and the game. People can be controlled and companies will likely get better at that over time. Right now only a few are controlled to such a degree. But at some point the average person's self control will no longer be part of the equation.

Most f2p games (Korea-China-Japan) are really freemium games aka p2w. If you don't pay, you are subjected to mediocre gear/items and excluded from everything game has to offer due to RNG and gear restrictions imposed onto players that do not pay. Many f2p games create incentives enticing you to pay and it is deceitful. The main issue however is that even the cash shop items have an insidious amount of RNG involved hence why dude was able to spend $7000. Everyone agrees to some extent that it is not fair. I have paid to play DCUO (well it isn't f2p why do they still advertise as such) and some Nexon games.

Anyway the problem is that the business model used in these games are predatory and exploitative.

Its a big deal that is often overlooked due to lobbyist. Ultimately nothing major happens to leave a lasting impact. They just do workarounds or find loopholes. In all, I have self control though. Spent little under $200 on f2p games over the last 6 years I started playing them. However this doesn't make the business model used in f2p games right and it's highly unregulated.

For example, at one point in Vindictus:

  • The drop rate for a vital gear piece in order to progress in the game for some classes was 0.002% or 1/442 (well denominator was over 400).
  • Weapon +10 enhance was minimum including having a full armor set in order to join pug endgame raids
  • +10 required cash shop runes- avg. people spent on weapon to +10 was $20 else risk breaking and farming same raids/dungeons to craft weapon again
  • People who enjoyed the game or never paid before were all of a sudden FORCED to pay in order to progress in a timely manner
  • It took many casuals a YEAR just to get competent gear and many players were not allowed into endgame raids till patches reworked gear progression

Throughout that dark period in the game, Vindictus hosted numerous events that enticed whales to keep buying and convinced casuals to purchase cash shop items only to be turned away due to the RNG involved with cash items. For example, an enchant rune cost $10 each and had a success rate of 40%. Meanwhile, they were the select few due to RNG whom were able to get BiS gear without paying a dime RNGeeesus.

In a nutshell, that's how majority of those so called f2p games work including the popular Tera hence the revolving door community it has.
