It's a good thing the Japanese market is the 3rd (or is it 4th now?) largest game market, since I'm not too fond of "Japanese" style games.

Then they also missed out RTS, TBS, side-scrolling adventure, HnS and other quirky games from the west. And here I believe most of Japanese households own HDTV. :( I believe that the reason why Japanese gamers don't like shooter is because they're not allowed to have firearm in their own household unlike American citizens. :P

This is the same reason the 360 is flopping in Japan. Not because Microsoft has tried but because Microsoft isnt run by Japanese employees.

Regardless, Western games have done really well in Japan this generation despite being on the PS3 and even the 360. Look at sales of CoD or Oblivion.

Do you mean specifically in video games or in media/culture in general?

Samus Aran, Jill Valentine, Selvaria (Valkyria Chronicles), Lightning, Fang, Ashe (FFXII), Tifa Lockheart, Mitsuru Kirijo (Persona 3) would probably be described as strong female characters.

Sure they're not plentiful specifically from Japan, but then how plentiful are they in general anyway?

Most games come out in European countries at the same time, there are exceptions like DS but that goes both ways,I guess.

Yeah pretty much, there are a few Nintendo games and Sony games that come out later. But by far the majority comes at the same time.

I agree. Female characters in Japan are usually whining girls with big chest, thigh high socks and almost none clothes. There are few female characters that are strong in japanese media like Lightning or Saber.

I was talking about games.

Yeah, there are stong female characters from Japan but they are very rare.

Look at what they did to Samus for example, they tried to cater more to the Japanese market and turned here into a much weaker character. When they try they often end up with an almost life-less cold character like Selvaria or basically a man with boobs like Lightning.

You don't really have characters like Jade from Beyond Good or Evil or April Ryan from The Longest Journey.

I would argue though that Alicia from Valkyria Chronicles is a great female characters. She is deterimed, has natural emotions and is confident.

Lol not even. Only 5 million? Really?

drspudz

Yeah I was quite shocked at that. I mean in the west there are games that have sold more than the PS3s Japan have sold.

Maybe they have less of a need for higher end graphics. The DS probably handles a lot of what they need. Maybe thats why Nintendo stopped pushing graphics technology with the Wii. I don't know.

But graphics aren't everything, we've benefited hugely from the physics capabilities of the 360 and PS3 and I appreciate that and wouldn't give that up. Although the Physics capabilities of the Wii aren't too bad if utilized well. I think I read that every other clock cycle on Boom Blox is calculating physics.

Planeforger

To be fair, North America doesn't get many Eastern European games (nor are they particularly popular over there), while Europe gets European, American and Japanese games.

Anyway, I'm not terribly surprised at those stats, but slightly disappointed with Japan as a nation. They're missing out on a lot of great games, and being exposed to more genres would certainly generate more creativity within their own gaming industry.

I wasn't aware that some EU games don't get released in the US (I live in the UK), can you give some examples, i'm genuinely curious. :?

Their loss. In the N64 and Gamecube eras I mostly prefered Japanese games, but nowadays I think 'Western' is the way to go, especially the Eastern European region. When I take a look at my shelf right now and see how many European and American games are on there, I cannot help but feel very sorry for Japan. The PC games I currently have on my shelf, for example: Mirror's Edge, GTA IV, Crysis and Warhead, Bioshock 1 & 2, Oblivion, STALKER SoC, CS, and CoP, Metro 2033, FEAR, FEAR 2, andAge of Empires 1, 2, and 3. Granted, most of these are shooters as that is what I use my PC for mostly, but I think it's safe to say that the saying 'Western game, #### game' is pathetic.

Well, yeah, but I did find it surprising that the first Western game in the top 100 of best-selling games in Japan was found at #77. At least Japanese games (Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M are some recent examples) have the potential to do as well here as any Western game.

Thats a shame. A lot of my favorite games are JRPGs, but that doesn't change the fact that most Japanese games are downright terrible. Seriously.

Western RPGs and games are usually a lot, lot better.

My favorite game ever is a JRPG, but most the others are western.

Cultural difference and Western devs develop games based on local taste, not remotely based on Japanese taste so only small group of Japanese accepted it. Vice versa.

Yes, but I've heard Japanese people say they didn't know RE was Japanese.

Maybe the series' western name threw them off(assuming those people referred to it as Resident Evil and not Biohazard.).

The game was retitled Resident Evil due to possible litigation with a heavy metal group that has the name Biohazard.

the gen has been pretty lame if you like japanese games . western gamers have no taste its all call of duty and space Marines .

dontshackzmii

yes western gamers have no taste lets all ignore the fact we have games besides Call of duty, what about Monkey Island, what about Mass Effect series what about dragon age, what about Dirt, what about Flight Sim, Splinter cell, Starcraft, what about Fallout, i don't see eastern Devs reinventing things over the years all i see are lame rehashes of the same game or a really polished action games like Ninja Gaiden or Street fighter that is it. I see no risks taken by them over there. With the exception of The really good Japanese Devs of course. The majority However stick to the same formula. Thats not to Say we dont have that here its jsut the Hypocritcal statements.

How many Japanese games would you find in the top 75 of any other region? There'd be a boat load of Nintendo games for the Wii and DS, not to mention games like Dead Rising or Demons Soul or Final Fantasy or Grand Turismo or Resident Evil .... the list would be huge. Unfortunately this article just reinforces my own prejudices about Japanese gamers tastes and makes it doubly laughable when some of the people on this board have the cheek to throw the xenophobic card at western (and it particular US) gamers for liking western games and the 360.

Wait what? The article doesn't refer to the "flood of FPS" games making them avoid western games at all "The other day," says Q Entertainment's Mielke, "I was having lunch with a friend and I said, 'Have you ever played StarCraft?' And he said, 'What's StarCraft?'

i can't blame 'em.

if your country was bombarded with two nuclear bombs, then foreign scientists (who bombed you) come afterwards to study the radiation effects, wouldn't that tick you off?

i think the thing here is that the West always wants to dominate everything, and that anything coming from the West should be welcomed, and is and will always be right.

also, the fact that Western games this gen are all about shooting things. you are in one area, you shoot anything that moves, go to another area, shoot everything again, etc. Japanese people don't like that kind of game and violence. it's safe to say that they prefer melee and swords over guns. i remember this one interview wherein a Japanese guy asks, "why would you use a gun and then kill everything? it doesn't make sense."

also, with the type of games dominating this gen like Halo and CoD, seriously, IMO it's as lame as how Western gamers stereotype Japanese tastes. when you go to Akihabara no one knows what Halo is, seriously.

i, for one, hate the fact that most Asian countries tend to be Westernized, and that city folks (such as people from Tokyo, or Seoul) think that their cultures are lame and old-fashioned and that American products are cool and stuff, when clearly, it's their cultures that identify them.

It's almost impossible for the Western world to relate. Unlike America they're an ultra homogenized society. Over here we call that close minded... over there it's just being Japanese. A "no foreigners allowed" sign would never fly hung up on a shop window over here, over there a "Japanese only"is just fine.

Completely different societies.

Can you really blame them? The main reason I got tired of my XBox 360 is that it was so saturated with western games. Very few western devs can make a game like Capcom, Konami, SquareEnix, and especially Nintendo can.

[QUOTE="MoonMarvel"]Japan has some of the most creative devs in the world. It isnt that they are not creative, just that they have different tastes in games. Lets not turn this thread into an Anti-Japan one, we wouldnt have games without them.MoonMarvel

Well, in truth the first game was created by some rather Western looking gentleman... "

The earliest example is from 1947-a "Cathode ray tube Amusement Device" was filed for a patent on January 25, 1947 by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann, and issued on December 14, 1948 as U.S. Patent 2455992."

Though, I do not mean to demean the work of the various innovative Japanese or Eastern developers. Of course, the gaming industry in general could stand to be a bit more innovative and open to new ideas.

You need to read up on the video game crash here and what caused the turn around. You assume I meant they invented games, which was not what I said. Japanese devs seem way more open to innovation than western devs, even western devs admitt this.

Not anymore, well, I suppose Nintendo are yes, but outside of that, not at all. that is why there has been a big shift this generation, consoles were able to tap into the PC market properly, and thus a shift has begun. That being said, western games this gen are boring me... same old crap all the time, world of warcraft clones, 30 year old near bald men ruling all our games (Id rather play a so called "Girly man" than half the crap in western games... Japan sells sex appeal better, they are less subtle about it, most of their characters, while not realistic are beautiful. whereas western try and fail... hell, ME2's sex idol is pretty friggin average.

"I've come across Japanese development companies as recently as two years ago where the engineers, the designers of the game, owned a PS2, a PSP, a Wii and a DS," says Campbell. "I've sat people down with a next-gen game, and they thought they were watching a cut scene until I gave them a controller. I was like, 'No, this is what people in the West play.'"

Part of it is alot of it is probably lost in translation or just can't bridge the culture gap. Just look at Final Fantasy 13: Famitsu praised it up and down for it's story, yet it hits America and most reviewers knocked it for the story not being good. Same is probably true of western games in Japan. The premise of a game will strike a chord with one audience while another audience just finds it ridiculous.

I like JPN games, most of the game i played are made by JPN dev. , i believe around 60-70% of the game i played are JPN in origion and i live in ME, imagine if i was a JPN person with a JPN taste, i am not surprised.
