This morning we ran a roundup of clips from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon's big post-E3 "Video Game Week,"highlighted by his hands-on time with the Wii U. Fallon's opening monologue, however, is where the entertainment is, really.

Nintendo can't be too pleased that its Late Night close up begins by describing the Wii U as some kind of a hardware extension to the regular old Wii. But that's what Fallon does in setting up the evening's guest list for viewers.

"This is the new system. You add it to your Wii or you don't even need to use the Wii. Do you need to use the Wii?" he rambles. "You can just use it on your own, but you can also use it with the Wii."

Perhaps that explains why Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, was so specific in his on-camera segment. "This is the Wii U. Right?" says Fils-Aime. "This entire package, the console and really what makes it different is this new controller." You can almost see him arching his eyebrows at Fallon off-camera.

Nintendo keeps having this problem with the Wii U. Not a week after its unveiling at E3 2011, company president Satoru Iwata already regretted its presentation, which seemed to emphasized the controller to the exclusion of the console, perhaps leading some not to see it as an entirely new system.

But that's the risk you run when you make the controller the face of the system, not the hardware itself, as Shigeru Miyamoto said when explaining why the Wii U won't stand upright. The console's designers didn't include a stand because they wanted to differentiate it from the upright Wii. However, "The Wii U GamePad is really the face of the system," Miyamoto told Stephen Totilo, "whereas, with the Wii system, we had really designed it so that that system itself really stood out when you looked at it."

The Nintendo E3 helped a lot..............

Well lets be honest, didn't everyone think that after E3 2011? Even with Nintendo repeatedly saying it wasn't, its hard for it to not come off as a peripheral, even to gaming press and especially to the more mainstream press (like Jimmy Fallon).

People are going to get confused with the WiiU really being a new console until the system releases.

Well its a common occurrence, and seems to spit in the face of Nintendo's insistence that this is a brand new console with new features and a similar name, and not simply a Wii HD with a nifty new controller.

I mean, that's not great marketing is all, I guess it doesn't matter in the grand scale of its quality or similarities or whatever, but marketing wise its something Nintendo hasn't gotten through well.

What you dummies who are ragging on Jimmy Fallon don't realize is a very small percentage of gamers visit gaming websites and most of the people who were / are interested in the Wii U are people who were dumb enough to buy a Wii in the first place.

So this is actually a pretty significant goof and does not help Nintendo at all.....

Imo, nintendo did this on purpose.

With the 3DS it was a bad thing because people thought it was just a new version of the DS, and when they saw it in stores it looked just like an overpriced 3D version of what they already had.

With the WiiU there will be no way for them to think that it is just a peripheral once they see it in stores, not just for price but also because it will obviously be more than just a tablet in the bigger box, and the console itself will probably be displayed. The initial confusion on whether or not it is a peripheral will only help it because peripherals are not as expensive as a whole new console. All the dumb masses will see at first and only think it is a new cool controller and the games look nice. Eventually they will realize it is not a peripheral but by then they have already at least been thinking about the WiiU all that time.

This is what happens when nintendo is trying to keep banking on the success of the Wii. They could have named it Wii 2, or another name, but the goal was to make it confusing.

Nintendo's Marketing Campaign for the Nintendo 3DS was essentially that. Unless you forgot about that.

He gives frequent air time to the medium though. I don't watch the show, so I don't know what you're talking about - but if it's merely a case of skill (or lack of :P) then remember that he's an entertainer first and foremost, doing something to get a few laughs off an audience isn't surprising.

Didn't Nintendo learn anything from the 3DS where many people thought it was a regular DS redesign with 3D effects. Don't name your console so similiarly to it's predecessor unless it has a number and market it better. I guess we haven't really seen the Wii U marketing campaign but still.

Which makes me think that the only reason he invites these developers on to his show is to garner Viewers. Cause really Jimmy Fallon sucks as a Late Night Comedian.

Lol, the big shots at Nintendo are trying to figure out why people think the Wii U is a peripheral for the Wii.

Oh, I dunno. Maybe because it looks exactly like a Wii and it's freaking called a Wii

I swear, after the 3DS identity crisis with so many people thinking it was a DS redesign, you'd think they would call the Wii U something entirely different from the Wii and make it look entirely different from the Wii.

If Jimmy Fallon thinks that, then a lot of casual gamers (the Wii and Wii U's main audience) would probably think that too. Wii U really does sound like an add-on and it will hurt sales if causals don't think of it as a new system.

I remember before E3 2011, I knew what the Wii U was. I knew it was their next gen console, but their presentation was so bad that I literally was so confused at the end because all they showed was the controller. They never even showed the console. I was thinking that maybe the controller was the console, and that's after I had researched the thing, read everything about it up until that point and knew it was supposed to be their next console.

I'd imagine to a casual gaming fan, the Wii U looks and sounds like anything but a next gen console. Nintendo is really failing hard when it comes to explaining what they're doing.

I agree, no one else seems to understand that Jimmy Fallon is a casual gamer and very similar to the core audience of the Wii U. If casual gamers see Wii U as simply add-on then that will have a negative impact on sales.

Wii 2 probably would have been a smarter choice rather than trying to sound cute. Do they not have someone working with the tech there, and explaining to that idiot what the deal is before the show starts?

Even most gamers in general believe WiiU is a lousy $250+ addon for the wii. Some more informed gamers think it's just a new controller bundled with essentially the same wii system, but with HD output, and technically they are close to the truth considering all game footages Nintendo shown so far looks like upscaled Wii games. It's obvious WiiU is going on the same path as the virtual boy and nGage, but Iwata is too arrogant to admit it.

And yet rumors point it towards being 2X times or more powerful then the 360.Ninty has to still get use to HD development you know.

The system is probably more powerful, but the controller probably sucks some of it's power. The CPU is probably one of the weakest parts of the system from what I heard.

Enough people that nintendo went through the trouble of showing the wii U on his show.
