[QUOTE="kuraimen"]Bill Gates once said that we would never need more than 64kb of memory on a computer. Big boys are not always right :P I see Linux as the future. And unless you're mentally deficient Linux can be as easy if not more than Windows you just need, you know, to use it regularly.Arach666

One of the biggest issues with ubuntu(from a windows user perspective)is that many simple actions regarding the interface are much more complex at first,and that alone will intimidate most people that simply don´t want to take the time to learn something new when they already have acess to something they´re used to already(windows) and in the end,performs pretty much the same tasks(for the most part)in a much more simpler fashion. I mean,how many people do you think are willing to learn how to use the terminal to perform some of the most important tasks,especially when many of them can be done much more simply on windows? Even DosBox is way too complicated for a lot of people out there,learning to properly use the terminal is much harder.
I use ubuntu for most things aside from gaming but I´m not exactly a layman when it comes to software,however the majority of people out there are and in the end,they don´t even need linux anyway,all things considered.

Which version of Linux is the best?

There's like a ton of different versions and I haven't used it for years and I'm considering trying it out again, if not switch to it completely.

Back when I tried it it seemed quite complicated but these new versions look much more user-friendly...

I think what he's asking for is which one will get him back to Windows the least quickest.

Ubuntu seems interesting too but looks more like a tablet OS to me.

I guess I need WINE too if I want to game on it...

Here is the original Reddit post which was in response to criticisms from this Tweet where he says that it made more sense to develope WINE rathar than lobby game developers for native support.

[QUOTE="clyde46"] So I was right then. nameless12345

But isn´t the article speaking in favor of an emulator ? :D

Emulation is not the right solution, tbh.

I'm a emulation enthusiast myself yet the fact is that accurate emulation drains far too much resources.

There would also be compatibility issues, graphical and sound glitches and such.

And this obviously isn't acceptable for retail games...

It's not emulation. It a compability layer. Everything is executed naively. You don't have the memory and performance losses associated with emulation.

I used them both in 2006-2008. They are very good distributions, both of them. But I liked Suse more.Anyway both distributions recognized all my drivers and have a lot of tools and applications with friendly UI. Their UI looked a lot like windows 7 back then in 2006.

Anyway chill out with WINE. Many games comsume 40% more resources when playing on Wine.

[QUOTE="kuraimen"]

[QUOTE="KungfuKitten"] Oh yes and I think it's very important to have a competitive OS. I still don't really understand why MS was allowed to have a monopoly, I don't see how it 'sped things up' or whatever. I can understand using certain protocols to speed things up but not having just one company of charge.jun_aka_pekto

Developing good protocols and APIs that get popular is fine but MAKE THEM OPEN. That's what Linux and GNU do. They make their programs in a way that can be run on any OS out there. Companies like Apple and M$ focus on closing protocols and APIs to their systems to create a monopoly that's why I dislike them.

I thought Mac games used similar APIs to Linux games.

If you make the game only with the unix api-s yes. If you make an osx native game then no. People don't realize that OS X is not unix, or a unix base. The underlyings of the OS are completely proprietary. What it does have is a Unix filesystem, (which results in the terminal/commandline) and a Unix translation layer, where you can use everything unix, and the OS translates that into the proprietary OS X. So pretty much it has a Unix emulator built into the operating system. Which yes, makes it easy to port software to OS X, and that was their intention.

Mandriva used to be Mandrake which was one of the first desktop-friendly distros. It always felt bloated to me (compared to other distros) probably because KDE used to be the default UI. I loved the KDE apps like KMath. When KDE Windows Initiative came along, I was delighted.

I haven't used SuSE since the early part of the last decade. It was okay then. I can't say much about the current version. Ubuntu is okay. I used it for my Linux class along with Fedora. Most of the stuff I did on them were command-line stuff. I can't say much about the GUI except they weren't bad at all although they didn't stand out either compared to Win 7 and OSX Snow Leo.

If that's the case, he can try any number of Linux Live CDs. No harm, no foul to the Windows partition.

Linux is to Windows what Openoffice is to MSoffice, what GIMP is to Photoshop and AVG to Panda. It's a free version of something similar to windows, but more limited and cooler and in some ways it even works better.

It is not free, it is open source, to the end user its the same, but theres some subtle and very important differences.

[QUOTE="blackace"]I wouldn't make a game console using Linux as the O/S. That's probably the most bonehead move anyone could do. People who think it's smart has no idea how the market works with 3rd party companies and publishers. You have to ask yourself a few questions. i've build myself a game console using Linux as the O/S and have app and tools to make games on it. 1) Who will support it? 2) What developer will make games for it? 3. What retailers will sell the systems and games? 4) Who will make the first party games? 5) Who will convert existing Windows or other console version games to the Linux? 6) How will it be marketed? Will there be ads and TV spots? The Steambox has FAIL written all over it. It's like the PSP GO. Something that was made that no one wanted or needed. jhonMalcovich

PS3 is running on a linux based OS. ;)

Ps3's OS is nothing to Brag about, it's what gives the Ps3 18MB LESS useable RAM over the 360. That being said, i see no reason not to code games on linux apart from the extra time, it could potentially be a good financial move if it's done right, i don't often disagree with Carmack on anything but i get the feeling he may be missing the boat and not realising it, times move on, things change, Valve are a Big player in the Market, if they push linux based games i see any reason why it won't be a viable Alternative to windows based games.

How Does it Work? The revolutionary TurboCache technology. By allowing the graphics processing unit (GPU) to share the capacity and bandwidth of dedicated video memory and dynamically available system memory, TurboCache turbocharges performance and provides larger total graphics memory. http://www.nvidia.com/page/turbocache.html
