The writer tries to bust out all the tricks. The Nintendo refuses to change, Nintendo releasing NES Classic being as Cash Grab, Nintendo mining Nostalgia, Apple policing Super Mario Run, Super Mario Run's lack of plug-n-play, Nintendo going Third-Party, etc, etc.

The Nintendo enthusiast just destroys him and throws the bones on the ground not even bothering to lick them. Unworthy!

I wouldnt count Nintendo out. The Switch is an interesting idea. It doesn't have enough to be a beast to have appeal. I'm getting one as soon as I can.

No, this article is pretty trash and nonsensical rambling, and I say that as someone who has been all too happy to criticize Nintendo over the last four years. There are legitimate points to criticize Nintendo on, this article uses none of them.

Nobody has to destroy nintendo they do that on their own. The switch is the latest blue ocean product. Meanwhile MS and Sony are doing great in the classic console market. The handheld market IMO is where NOJ should put all their eggs.

Yet the switch is weaker than cell phones and the og shield tablet. I hope the price will be under 200 but knowing NOJ it will be 250 and up.

@charizard1605: I haven't read the article, just hearing the snippets from the video. What I'm thinking of in particular is this guy criticizing the article for saying its a "totem". Unless its for the kids to play with, there are easier and better ways to obtain old nes games, really you are just buying it for the aesthetic. Thats not really a knock against Nintendo though

For the average customer who won't muck around with emulators and ROMs, NES Classic Mini and/or the Virtual Console remain the best way to play old games. Regardless, that isn't even the biggest point of contention, the problem is that that article is rambling horse shit that completely fails to actually make any coherent point whatsoever. I have not seen the video, so I won't comment on it (know iandzion, it's probably as bad as the article itself is), but hat article deserves nothing but criticism.

That's actually an interesting point you raise:

• Nintendo is calling the Switch a home system (not home console, btw, a home system) in the west, and a handheld in Japan; it is clear they are labelling it according to the biggest sellers in specific regional markets
• They are free to call it anything they want, but it remains a handheld (albeit not the most portable one)
• Labelling it what they want to is a marketing choice. The Switch's portability is indisputable.

Who is disputing its portability? The fact is Nintendo is marketing the system as their next home console. Home console and system is the same damn thing. Don't be silly. And obviously they are "free" to call it anything they want and their marketing will FACTUALLY set consumer expectations. And in this case they are marketing a home console not a handheld. You can gloss over this reality for the sake of argument but it does not change anything.

Well, then I would like to direct your attention to Nintendo calling it whatever is convenient.

The Switch can be taken as a console or a handheld- that's the point of the system. As a console, it's rather underwhelming. As a portable, it's kickass. I know what I choose to view it as.

You can view in whatever manner that makes you feel good but that doesn't change what its being marketed as which is the point that was being made.

Well, the NES Classic Mini is irrelevant to the larger discussion of Nintendo's future. I have no thoughts on the system (I view it as a novelty, and clearly, so does Nintendo, considering less than a million units were produced). Using it as any barometer for the future success (or lack thereof) for Nintendo strikes me as excessively foolish.

Man, I've literally called the Wii U the worst gaming related purchase I ever made, blasted major Nintendo releases like Star Fox Zero and Xenoblade X, and generally not been too happy with the company on the console front since 2014, Splatoon notwithstanding. You see what you want to see :p

I distinctly recall Reggie Fil-Aime referring to the handheld portion of the SWITCH as the actual system on the Jimmy Fallon Show.

I don't really understand people trying to count Nintendo out. Consolidating their handheld userbase with their console userbase and being able to put all development resources into a single pipeline is sheer genius. They've even simplified their hardware pipeline, which only cuts overhead.

For the life of me, I try to think how the Switch could go wrong, but then you look at handheld sales this year and you know it is going to do well.

The last time I remember a lot of people counting Nintendo out and talking about how they will soon have to go 3rd party was after the Gamecube flopped and right before the Wii launched and became one of the best selling consoles of all time.

I'm definitely not saying that the Nintendo Switch will be as successful as the Wii was, but it is to illustrate the point that people have been very wrong when they counted Nintendo out in the past. And from what I've seen from Nintendo over the past few months, I do think that Nintendo is now heading in the right direction and it would be foolish to count them out.

I think making a console/handheld hybrid is a very smart move that gives them a value that the competition can't offer and also consolidates their resources. I think they have also been doing much better marketing lately with things like the Nintendo Switch reveal video, the Apple conference appearance, and the Tonight Show appearance. Plus, Nintendo has been building momentum with three huge successes this year in Pokemon Go, Super Mario Run, and the NES Classic Edition which have put Nintendo in the mainstream headlines a lot, increased their brand equity after the Wii U flop, and reminded people of what they used to love about Nintendo right before the launch of the Nintendo Switch.

Given all this, I definitely don't believe that Nintendo is doomed.

I don't believe they are doomed, but I believe their luck will run out and that they are making serious fumbles that could make them more secure.

nintendo has the most ass-backwards account and online system and the wii u was a complete f*ck-up. and their distribution issues this holiday season made it impossible to buy any of their consoles. the company is full of amazingly bad decisions and resistance to change. if sheep were at all rational they'd understand the hesitation being expressed for the switch

Without watching the video these two "Nintendo releasing NES Classic being as Cash Grab, Nintendo mining Nostalgia" aren't 100% lies either. They aren't bad things either (people love Nintendo's IPs + love their older consoles, so they get both), but their description is kinda accurate.

Funny you call him a fanboy, thats whole reason i posted the video. Hes known to be VERY critical of Nintendo.

While I'm not here to watch the video, I will say this whole Nintendo Doomsday is always nothing but vaporware cause Nintendo still has billions of dollars then MS or Sony for that matter. Nintendo exclusive games always speaks for themselves and it's what these haters always miss, there games always counts for something.

@no-scope-AK47: I wouldn't call Sony as doing hot at least not in the software space not yet anyway. Third parties on the other hand are doing great. I don't know why but I can't shake the feeling Sony ain't doing so hot despite high hardware sales (lmao that really caught them off guard). They kinda feel like the old man with the bad leg while Ms is the hip youngster who's finally catching up in what it has to offer. I'm not certain but MS might surpass Sony next gen, if there is a next Gen the line between consoles and pc is really starting to fade.

That journalist really hit the proverbial nail on the head. Nintendo is doomed. Every console has sold worst than the last. The Wii was a fluke and the Wii U only managed to retain ~10% of its userbase. The Switch is just a severally under powered rehash of an Nvidia gimmick that never panned out. RIP Nintendo, you will be missed.

Nintendo is worthy of criticism but Pat is bang on there that any reasons for that aren't in that article.

Super Mario Run shows that Nintendo is evolving. Smartphones are no longer the enemy. They are viewed as part of the fabric of society. The gameplay in Mario Run is suited to smartphones. It doesn't even step on the gaming on their other platforms. It wasn't stolen from the 3DS/WiiU. It's also weird to criticize the smartphone mario game for having smartphone conceits like the DRM, etc.

As for the NES Classic, it was a hold-over product, an x-mas toy. It has some quick fun with a pinch of lasting appeal. They aren't going to make their xmas splash by pushing the failing WiiU, and they didn't want to rush the Switch and sacrifice the software and hardware in the process. Not only that, but the NES Classic is relevant in the modern industry imo. Low-spec 2D games are popular now, usually from indie devs. Some of the best games of that type were made during the NES era. There are quality games on the NES Classic. It's more than nostalgia.

Nintendo won't last long anymore as a console maker, after the switch they'll go full mobile, or god forbid they make a core console and go bankrupt.

Conjecture and guesswork. Nintendo pre-date everyone in the entire industry. They would be broke by now if they were ever going to be.

Nintendo is a cockroach. No matter how much it burns, it keeps surviving.
