Thats not consolization.

The series has just failed to evolve since the first game, being console or PC has nothing to do with it and plenty of other franchises fall into this.

actually black ops is added a lot more than anything IW ever did :S its got a fairly deep customisation system which is way more robust than the IW one imo.Does away with some silly challenges aswell.

CoD aint really been dumbed down its gotten more advanced in a few terms :S

Call of Duty failed to evolve because Activision demands a new one every single year. I know more than one studio makes the games, but still. It has very little to do with consoles.

Maybe Cod isnt the best example but no one can deny that certain games are been dumbed down A great example is Supreme Commander 2. Not even close to the greatness and the sense of scale of Supreme commander 1 Also UT3. Much slower paced than previous UT games

I agree with SupCom 2 but UT3 was great. The only problem was that very little had changed from UT2k4 other than maps and graphics.

Games are allowed to evolve. Developers often change gameplay from one game to another to keep things fresh, it draw in a new audience, and to make a better product. If you don't like it, go back to playing the old games.

-Snooze-

Can't say I agree there. Throwing potatoes in a tutorial mission because the Russian army couldn't afford real grenades for training>lame obstacle course. 4 had a good campaign, but it all went downhill after that. WAW was decent(minus the enemies having grenade launchers for hands), and MW2 was just hilariously lame in comparison to all other COD campaigns before it.

Multiplayer, I'd have to agree. I can't speak for 1 or UO, but I fail to see what makes COD2 "omgawesomrrawr" other than taking a lot of skill. Meh, I did buy it like two years ago, so maybe I don't have the nolstalgia effect.

Games these days oftendevolve. Developers often change gameplay from one game to another to attempt to keep things fresh, often failing, it draw in a new dumber audience, and to make a more mainstream (for idiots and kids) product. If you don't like it, go back to playing the old games.

Remmib

Fixed that for you.

Twenty years ago, games were cheap and often had punishing difficulty. That has evolved over time, making games easier in a lot cases, but also improving the game play at the same time.

Developers have to consider profit when making games these days. That means trying to make their game interesting to more than just the hardcore crowd.

Bad example. Call of Duty 4 was easily the best in the series, and it was designed with consoles in mind. All Call of Duties following Cod4 were the exact same thing, and that's why they're not good.

Call of duty did not have cohesive multiplayer, it was just a WWII fragfest. The d-day map was pretty fun but it got old after a week. BF1942 was way more fun.

MW2 multiplayer is far more refined than the original COD and encourages teamwork.

I give your attempt at bashing consoles a 2/10, and that is generous.

are you trying to claim that COD 1 and 2 had great storylines and multiplayer? *shakes head* they are no different then todays cod in the end and dumbing down means that original stuff had to be better and different then the dumbed down stuff.

Here is a video of COD multiplayer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wisMFIakmrQ&feature=fvw

A bunch of WWII soldiers running around and shooting each other. MW2 multiplayer is a lot more involved.

I mostly play on the 360 and I could bash consoles from the pc perspective better than 99% of the pc gamers here. Maybe I should offer lessons.

So when games come to consoles they become revolutionary, genre bending, mimic inducing hits like Call of Duty 4 that turn franchises into gold?

With this logic I can't understand why PC only games exist when consolization apparently does so much for gaming.

COD multiplayer has always been a casual affair. MW2 multiplayer isnt incredibly popular because it requires a ton of skill... its popular because the average joe can log into a multiplayer match and start snagging kills relatively effortlessly. But at the same time, none of the other CODs were any different.

Call of Duty's single player was never beefy. This is coming from someone who played the original CoD on the PC back when the series started fresh. I'd argue the campaign have improved significantly with more spectacular scripted sequences and more varied set pieces. Now, I'd say there hasn't been much progress since CoD 4, but still, point is the single player offerings of Call of Duty has never been significantly better than it is now.

If theres any aspect of Call of Duty that has ever felt like it suffered for being specifically catered to console gamers it's the multiplayer. Specifically, Modern Warfare 2. But from what I understand Black Ops turned things around a bit.

The campaigns in CoD, United Offensive, and CoD 2 were lengthier and IMO much more enjoyable than the newer CoD games. There was a really good immersion factor that the new games have gotten rid of by being so over the top. I still remember how hard it was to shut down the V2 rockets and retake Red Square on veteran. MW, MW 2, and WaW don't even come close to offering the same experience.

I second this!

For me personally I thought CoD4 was one of the probably the worst video games I've ever played. Only Rex Ronan is worse to me, but at least there's some nostalgia for Rex Ronan...

Meh, at least CoD4 created it's own kind of singleplayer campain (that they've copied four times now). The original CoD felt like just another generic WWII shooter back in the day. It was good and have the critical praise but so has every CoD game.

The online wasn't really interesting or fun either.

You could argue the same with PC only games though. The singleplayer in Starcraft 2 is awfully generic and dull compared to the original but that doesn't matter as we all know online is the real interest. Just like CoD today.

what what? original COD was amazing, it had a great cinematic feel very few other shooters could compete with at the time. But i would argue the COD series of games has only continued to improve on that concept.

EDIT: nm im thinking of cod2... i just looked at some youtube vids to jog my memory and COD1 was kinda generic.

actually black ops is added a lot more than anything IW ever did :S its got a fairly deep customisation system which is way more robust than the IW one imo.Does away with some silly challenges aswell.

CoD aint really been dumbed down its gotten more advanced in a few terms :S

It has definitely improved with Black Ops. And a really great single-player campaign, with a good story this time and not the convoluted story in MW2. It's my favorite COD game to date.
